Chris, I'll bet you a tenner that Man Utd will finish above Everton - fancy it? That'll be £20 towards some CDs I'll have at the end of the season, along with the other tenner I'll be taking from Stu! ;)

No bet then, Chris? :)

I'm had all the payment I want from seeing Moyes team get beaten at the Theatre of Dreams Screams.
Welbeck should have been booked for diving, although I'm pleased that another one of his team mates was.
The only dubious call was when Lloris came into contact with Young, and Young's reputation of falling over at will preceded him, and the referee wasn't 100% sure that he didn't dive.

Moyes is starting to show the pressure big style, and he hasn't got the balls to take his share of the blame for all of the defeats his side have had at home.
He also doesn't have the grace to give due credit to opponents who manage to beat his side.

One thing Moyes has yet to do is gain the confidence of his squad, and it shows.

Blackburn were good value against us in the FA cup 3rd round.
I hope their current manager can build on the grit they showed - if they can keep it up for the rest of the season they might well be rejoining the Premier League.
The replay at The Etihad will be interesting ...

The big question from me today is was it or wasn't it a goal for Newcastle yesterday?
The possibly bigger question is why was Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa not red carded, because he just might have sidelined Samir Nasri for a very long period of time with a totally needless and very late tackle?

Oldpinkman

Did nobody else see Sturridges goal? And people used to say wrestling was faked and rehearsed. If someone put that in a "Roy of the Rovers" episode it would be ridiculed as too improbable. What a wonderful game against Stoke! :)

Marco
13-01-2014, 16:24
Agreed - it was an absolute classic! People talk about Suarez, but for me, Sturridge, on his day, is almost as good - and without the baggage...

That game yesterday was as good as I've seen all year, and keeps us nicely in contention still for that Champions League spot! :)

Daniel Sturridge is a really good player, and I still can't fathom out why we let him go
Mind you, I was in good company with that opinion, 'cos Roberto Mancini couldn't work that one out either - the lad was gone before Mancini took the reins.

I wouldn't call Arsenal crappy, but it's only 1 point and there's plenty of season left for them to slip.
Talk to me about it in March.

I see that Rangers are romping up the leagues ;)

Marco
13-01-2014, 23:40
Lol - the Arsenal comment was aimed at Chelsea (one of our member's here, not the team) ;)

'The Arse' are still my tips to win the league, and it could go down to goal difference.

Aye, long may Rangers romp up the leagues and get back into the SPL, as I miss the 'Old Firm' games - that is, however, if they don't end up going bankrupt again before they get there....

As for Newcs goal.....why not?

Here we go, the expected cop-out :eyebrows:

Point 1 - there were 3 Newcastle players offside when the ball was struck.
Point 2 - of those 3, 2 were between the goal posts.
Point 3- the Newcastle player nearest the goal line became active when he moved out of the way. If he hadn't moved out of the way the ball would have struck him and likely as not gone in, and because of his offside position the goal would have been disallowed anyway.

chelsea
14-01-2014, 00:25
Like hart was going to save it.
The offside players made no odds and didn't touch the ball.

Think most city fans would feel a bit gutted if it was there goal.

Admittedly the ref had a very hard decision to make.

If it happens you can laugh all you want...

Ok, I shall bear that in mind... ;)

Incidentally, the only reason I have an interest now in the fortunes (or otherwise) of Man Utd, is because their manager is an ex-Celtic player, whom I happen to like, so after the Celtic and Liverpool results (I have no affinity with any other English clubs), the Man Yoo result is the one I look out for.

When Moyes goes (and I don't believe that is on the cards for a while), unless they appoint Martin O'Neil, or someone else of that ilk, I will care not a jot about what Man Utd get up to.

There are only four football teams I truly support: Celtic, Liverpool, and the Italian and Scottish international teams - and in that order of preference! :)

Lol... Call it a gut feeling I have, Chris, and they're often right...

Arsenal are definitely due a few slip-ups (which could be coming soon), but I believe that the title will end up theirs, albeit it could go down to goal difference!

I support 19 teams in the Premier League alone - Manchester City first and foremost, closely followed by anyone else playing United :eyebrows:
On rare occasions I would prefer United to win, but sadly the last time that happened Chelsea won 3-1.

Marco
23-01-2014, 11:32
You see, Chris, that is where you and I differ. You have this 'hatred thing' going on with Man Utd (which I understand but can't relate to), and I see that as a fundamentally unhealthy thing.

As a Celtic supporter, you'd automatically presume that I hated Rangers... Well, not at all.

I was genuinely pissed off when Rangers went bust and were demoted to the Scottish Second Division (because there would be no more 'Old Firm' matches for years and the title race would be far less exciting), and also saddened that such a thing should happen to a successful and long-established football club.

Therefore, unlike many of my Celtic-supporting friends, I was not 'dancing in the isles' at Rangers demise, as I suspect you would be, should such a thing ever happen to Man Utd! ;)

Even when Rangers were successful, I always supported them in Europe, as regardless of anything else, they were a Scottish club - and I would do the same with ANY other Scottish team. Do you support other English teams, when they're playing in Europe, and if so do you leave Man Utd out of that equation?

I'm asking purely to see how deep-rooted your bias against them is....

Marco.

Stratmangler
23-01-2014, 12:13
Hatred is a bit too strong a term to use.
Intense dislike is nearer the mark.
I have good friends who support Utd, but we agree to differ when it comes to football, and we all concede if our respective team plays badly.

I was seriously disappointed at the pathetic performance Utd put in at The Etihad this season - I was hoping for a decent competitive match, and that game was akin to taking sweets off a little kid.
To add insult to injury City weren't even playing all that well.

Marco
23-01-2014, 12:28
Ok, but you still haven't answered my question....

I think some of the dislike is directed more to the so called 'plastic fans' that Utd appear to have , I noticed a comment from one of these 'fans' where he stated 'I'm considering giving up supporting Utd' ,pretty pathetic ! Arsenal have had some right old beatings from Utd and City in recent times:( but I would never give up on em ! My team since 1970 .

Stratmangler

Marco.

Not particularly.
I keep an eye on how they're doing, but to say support is overstating things. I might watch a match if it's on the telly, but I wouldn't put myself out to do so.

I watched the 2011 Champions League final at Wembley because Barcelona were playing, and I expected a footballing masterclass - I was not disappointed.

There's more than a word of truth in what you say Chris. United have more than their fair share of glory seeking fairweather fans, and yes, considering giving up supporting Utd is a pretty pathetic state of affairs.

And there's respect from me for sticking with Arsenal through thick and thin, good times and bad.
I have always been a City supporter, and yes, it was tough in our wilderness years.
The game we play at The Emirates will be one of the key ones of the season, and I hope with every last ounce of my being that we leave with all 3 points.
Please do not take this personally!
I expect you to have similar feelings.

I've not long since finished having a chat with a Utd supporter from Manchester (yes, they do have some), and he's saddened to have lost last night's semi final, but relieved to have escaped the prospect of a battering at Wembley.
He's also hoping that Utd can make a better account of themselves in the rescheduled derby match. If Rooney and van Persie are both fit he feels that it will be a much better match than the last one.

Lol... Be honest: when hearing that Man Utd have been beaten in Europe, is your instant feeling more one of disappointment than gladness, or vice versa? ;)

Sorry, Chris, I think that the "intense dislike" you have for Utd smacks of bitterness, which isn't healthy, although rather common amongst football supporters, especially when involving a rival club from the same city.

I have no intense dislike of any football team, not even Rangers. How could I intensely dislike a group of players that have done nothing to me, and at the end of the day, are only doing their job? If their team beats my favourite team, then hey-ho, that's life. It's only a game of football.

Now, I *can* intensely dislike some of the low-life hooligans, posing as 'fans', who support the likes of Man Utd, Man City, Celtic or Rangers, and whose behaviour is often despicable, but that's a rather different matter.

However, football rivalry, for me, under normal circumstances, does not degenerate into feelings of "intense dislike". All I'm interested in is my team winning, but if they are beaten by a better (or luckier) side, then so be it :)

Marco.

Well done, although just imagine how it feels supporting a real 'diddy team', such as Norwich - sorry Alex!! :eyebrows:

Anyway, the pathetic tossers who are "considering giving up supporting Utd" are precisely that: glory hunters spoiled during the Ferguson era. Thing is, I wonder how many "plastic fans" Man City now have, since they're one of the richest clubs in the world, and can sign virtually whatever players they like?

Might a 'glory hunter/plastic fan' be tempted to attach himself or herself to such a club, especially since Utd are currently in a transitional period? ;)

Yep, great result for Liverpool! They really are a 'sorted' side now, and slowly, but very surely, getting back to their best. Next season I expect them to be genuine challengers for the title, although, at the end, I think they'll be damn close this year...

As expected, a little slip-up from Arsenal (although Southampton is always a difficult away fixture), which when City play their game in hand tonight, I expect them to capitalise on. Chelsea should also beat West Ham, so the top three will look a little different tomorrow.

Good result too for Man Utd (sorry, Chris). Watch them go now that Van Persie is back. I expect Van the man to really start worrying a few Premiership team defences, and showing his true class, especially now that Mata (a player I really rate) is in the line-up.... ;)

He will make a massive difference to the form of Man Utd.

Saints the only team to get anything vs city in their last 10 games apparently.

The result, however, certainly rubber-stamps Liverpool's credentials for being genuine title challengers next year.....

However, there's no doubt that the biggest winners from today's results (dropped points at the top) were Chelsea!

Arsenal going down 5-1 at Anfield was was a bit of an unexpected surprise.
Frustrating for us at Norwich today - they had barely a shot on goal, although I can't believe they missed a goalmouth cross late on in the game.

Still, only a point between each of the top three placings, so it's game on Tuesday/Wednesday.
We have Sunderland back at ours on Wednesday.

Your result has helped City too, which is an added bonus for you :D

I was parked up at the Etihad tonight when I found out our game had been called off. No bloody surprise either, there are trees down across a number of roads around Manchester, not to mention bits of stadium furniture (a programme kiosk) being blown around and bashing into things.
The upside is the respite should do us well for Chelsea's return on Saturday.

On a personal note, I managed to get back my car parking charge, with no quibble. Result

I hope you're right about result.

No predictions from me - even without Aguero we have a side that can do great things, so I just keep the faith, and anticipate the game knowing that it will be a tough one.
If we can keep the Barcelona midfield quiet then who knows what the result will be?

Marco
18-02-2014, 13:26
Fingers crossed, Chris. As they're the British team, I'll certainly be supporting City.

You guys are usually very strong at home, so I'm hoping that will continune to be the case tonight. As long as the result leaves you with something useful to defend in the return leg (as that will be a *very* tough game), then I think you're in with a chance of progressing.

Good luck, matey! :)

Stratmangler
18-02-2014, 13:38
Cheers for that

The postponed match from last week had the effect I thought it would, in that a tired squad had a bit of respite from nursing the aches and niggles, and came back all the stronger for it.
Mourinho was quite correct in his comments about City looking the fresher of the two sides on Saturday.
I was at the league game against Chelsea, and it was a different story altogether - Chelsea were the stronger side both physically and mentally, and it showed. Isn't it funny what difference a couple of weeks (and a rest) can make?
I'm hoping that the unscheduled rest and its positive effects continue for the rest of the season - all I know is we've got a hell of a lot of games to come and the further into it we get the harder it gets physically.

Stratmangler
18-02-2014, 22:06
Ah well!
You were correct about the controversy, Marco.
The foul (not given) against Navas led to the foul on Messi outside the box, which was a sending off, but in no way was it a penalty.

I feel we were a little hard done to, but defiant in the the face of a numerically superior Barcelona, and they nearly paid the price for being complacent about their numerical advantage.
Their second goal was, however, superbly taken by Alves.

So we're beaten in this battle - the fixture is not dead and buried, and there's everything to play for at The Nou Camp.
Watch this space!

Marco
18-02-2014, 22:33
Yeah, I got the '2' bit right for Barca - just not the '3' bit for City!

I thought you were unlucky, as up until the penalty, City had the better chances and looked more of a threat in front of goal.

I agree that it wasn't a penalty, but it was a difficult one for the referee to call correctly, as from where he was it'd have looked a stone-waller. I thought that you did really well with 10 men against them for most of the second half, but something had to give eventually!

You're still in with a chance, mate, but it'll be *very* difficult as they are awesome on their own patch. If you can get an early goal over there, and put them under pressure, then who knows...?

Marco.

Stratmangler

I agree that it wasn't a penalty, but it was a difficult one for the referee to call correctly, as from where he was it'd have looked a stone-waller

... which is why there are linesmen.
The ref didn't get any help from the linesman on that decision.

We're beaten but unbowed, so, as I said earlier, watch this space.
We can turn it around on the away leg, and we've got nothing to lose in trying.
In between now and then we've got a league game, a Wembley final, and an FA cup tie to play in.
Roll on the return leg in Barcelona!!!

Marco
18-02-2014, 22:56
Lol - I admire your enthusiasm! If I were a City supporter, I'd probably feel the same way, especially with the goal threat your team carry... It'd be great if you did get through, so fingers crossed on that one :)

Well I know one player who won't be boarding the 'plane to Spain.

If we can get the team through the next couple of weeks without any injuries we might just be in a position to properly hurt Barcelona at home.
Sergio should hopefully be back and making an appearance against Stoke on Saturday, and if we can keep him and a number of others fit for then there's every chance we can win the away leg and the tie.

I agree with you, it's tough at the top, and like a fan of the invisible man we're not really here ;)

Yes, it was a decent result for you today.
And your run in is not the easiest.

Our game yesterday was not the most inspiring - we had a dose of the post lost match blues, and coupled with an opposition that had no ambitions beyond defending for a 0-0 draw it made for a rather tedious match.
Touré's goal was a superbly taken one, with the big man having to adjust his step to contact the ball and going over in the process.
Dzeko left a nice dint in the goalpost after kicking it in frustration after missing what should have been the easiest of tap ins

Beat Barcelona and your name is on the cup.
Reminds me of when we played Juventus in '99. 1-1 at Old Trafford so they had the away goal advantage, then we went 2-0 in the first 10 minutes in the away leg.
But we bounced back and won 3-2 against a side 'unbeatable' on their own ground.....The rest is history.

Nine points with three in hand still have to be won, so in that respect he has the advantage.
And the lack of games for Chelsea does give a slight advantage in terms of player fatigue.

Arsenal played well yesterday - I wonder who you'll play in the semi-final.

Liverpool for the title is currently 11/2 - I've just checked.

Wigan aren't our bogey team - their relatively new manager has been putting them through the numbers, raising their fitness levels and discipline levels in the process.

Chelsea have not played that well all season except for a handful of games.Being top flatters them imo.
We have done well without strikers pulling there weight but this needs to be sorted in the summer.

Both city & Liverpool have the title in there grasp as they have to play each other.

But did you see the few seconds shot of Alex with a fixed and gloomy look on his face? He wasn't enjoying what he was seeing and as he was in major part responsible for appointing his successor, how much longer will it be before he accepts that that was one decision he got wrong. He was fairly ruthless making necessary changes when they were needed on the field (think of the key star players he got rid of for one reason or another) and I suspect we may see a manager join that high profile exit list.
They can afford to pay any manager in the world so why settle for someone with no real track record of success? - his main claim was holding mid table positions with limited resources, not the sort of experience ManU would be hoping to replicate IMO.

There was one late on in the game where there should have been another penalty, and that was ignored by Clottenburg.

Gerrard's 3rd penalty, ironic that the later one wasn't given.

Ah, I didn't see that one.
I did see the penalty being taken, and couldn't believe Gerrard missed

I was not following the game that closely - the TV was on in the background, and I was doing other things.
I did see that The Rags have barely improved since last we met, but that's just an overall impression.

I can see that the big banana skins we might tread on are the games at The Emirates, Anfield and Goodison Park.

He has more or less the same team as won the title last season, the only real difference being the man at the top.

Moyes was a shock appointment, he's a decent bloke but totally out of his depth at a club like United.
Big clubs need big names as far as managers and players go, we need a new squad and manager. None of the 'big' managers are available at this stage of the season, so one possibility is Fergie as caretaker whilst we find a replacement for Moyes. With Moyes at the helm we will get hammered by City, 5 or 6 goal margin well within their capability.

There's no doubt that Moyes is not a happy man, and is under severe pressure, or that his 'team' currently looks nothing remotely like one - and there are many reasons for that. However, rest assured that Utd will not panic, and so will remain focussed on supporting Moyes, in the medium term. I honestly feel that he will come good in the end.

As far as yesterday's game goes, I think that Liverpool would've beaten most teams the way they played. They're having a lot of fun at the moment, and it shows. Quite simply, they were awesome yesterday, in terms of their cutting edge, pace and power, and sheer ruthlessness in front of goal, excusing Gerrard's pathetic penalty miss! :eyebrows:

In my opinion, Liverpool are now more dangerous than ever, as a result of how their confidence has grown because of the results they've achieved, and particularly now as they go all-out to try and win the title, relaxed with essentially 'nothing to lose', insofar as no-one would've predicted them to be in that position now. The real pressure to win the title is very much on Chelsea and Man City!

I've said before that Moyes will at Utd for the long haul, as he is seen as being Feguson's protégé, and I stand by that. In terms of the future of Moyes, do not underestimate the influence behind the scenes of Sir Alex Ferguson, as he has plans for the boy. I suspect that this season would've been secretly 'written off' by Man Utd as being a transitional period for the team and manager, and so anything, bar relegation, would've kept Moyes in a job for the first year.

Indeed, in that respect, need I remind anyone of Alex Ferguson's less than auspicious start when he was first appointed as manager....?

No, I'm confident that Moyes will be at the helm there next season (*unless* the team truly falls apart between now and the end of the season) and that is when the results he achieves will be truly judged. In terms of this season, if they can finish in the top six in the league, you can bet your boots that Moyes will be given a chance to prove himself next year.

Lol! :D

More seriously, though... Say that City don't win the title this year, then what kind of season, realistically, will they have had? Are they still in the FA Cup (I haven't checked)? If they don't win the title this year, then coupled with last year's trophy-less effort, I'd say that would be a pretty poor show, and nothing to gloat about...

If City, given the many MIILIONS of pounds they've spent on players consider 'success' as equating to being runners up in the league (or perhaps worse), merely reaching the last 16 in the Champion's League, and the odd cup win, then I'm afraid that they're a pale shadow of what Utd were when they were at their best, and so in that respect they've got a LONG way to go before emulating them!!

'Success', with the type of aspirations Man City now have, and the vast sums of money they've spent chasing that success, means doing what Utd did, in terms of winning league titles, year after year, winning the Champion's League and regularly getting to quarter finals, semi finals and the finals of the competition, as well domestic cup wins, contributing to winning doubles and trebles.

When, or if, City ever achieve that type of success, matey boy, then as a supporter, you'll have earned the right to be smug...... :exactly:

Sorry to have been blunt, Chris, but I thought that a dose of realism needed to be injected into proceedings, before you got too carried away with how good Man City *actually* are! ;)

A lack of consistency sums up City perfectly, they are capable of bouts of pure brilliance but then their defence gets bored and goes on holiday for a few games. When City are on form though they are a joy to watch (unless they are playing Arsenal of course )

Darren Ferguson is doing good things at Peterborough just now, maybe him stepping into his old mans shoes at Man United might be just the ticket for both him and the club...

City have to win the league given their expenditure. They were knocked out of the cup by Wigan (at home) as well as failing in Europe (no surprise given the opposition). Pressure is on but they managed to beat Hull with 10 men when I expected them to fold. Also Chelsea losing helped which may prove Mourinho playing down their chances correct. Maybe he is more realistic rather than a bluffer given they are lacking a top in form striker. Agree no way Moyes will be sacked. Too many players over the hill and due for replacement as well as Van Percy off form. Liverpool now looking slight favourites and no pressure as they are perceived as over achievers. Hope Gerrard got his penalty miss out of the way with World Cup coming up! Arsenal can't be ruled out in spite of injuries to key players - capable of winning all their games without playing well.

Fergie came to Old Trafford with an excellent CV, he broke the monopoly in Scotland and won European silverware. Your right in saying he didn't have the best of starts but he was building up a terrific youth team, and the more clued up (football wise) directors at OT realised that, the money grabbing element only looked at the league results.
Moyes on the other hand, despite being a decent bloke has bugger-all on his CV apart from keeping Everton in a respectable league position. He leaves Everton and they immediately improve, the only time Moyes will win a European trophy is on his playstation!

Fergie has some influence with the Glazers, but they are hard-nosed businessmen not football men. Share values have dropped significantly and attendances are down, they will not tolerate that indefinitely. Last season no one outside the premiership had heard of Moyes, now he is known for all the wrong reasons. This could have a negative impact in the transfer window, there are plenty of players who would love to join United.....but with Moyes as manager?
He may or may not limp to the end of the season with the club, but he just hasn't got what it takes to manage a big club, he would be fine with the likes of Swansea/Cardiff/WBA, ect but he can't hack it at Old Trafford.

It is worth pointing out that Brendan Rogers didn't make a big impact last season but team has now jelled. Takes about 18 months if the Manager is actually any good. There will be a summer buying spree at Man U so Moyes will get a chance with his own team next season. He probably has to Xmas for things to improve. Other Clubs have brought in top foreign coaches and still not had the desired result. In Moyes' favour there is no obvious replacement available.

Everyone expected the transition to be hard and i don't think coming in the position they are now would be a big problem.
What is a problem is the way they are playing and with any lack of direction or tactics. The players look bemused and baffled and moyes is out of his depth.
Fellani was a knee jerk buy and he has made mata a world class player look average.

Mayes is not a progressive manager and all he has done is made utd into worse team than the one he just left.

Not sure how Fergie can support him for much longer as his own legacy looks bad the longer this allowed to continue.

Got it in one Sir.

A good manager may take a season or two to get things running well, we seem to be going backward. after a stumbling start stability and confidence should be forming by now, it isn't. On Wednesday we are playing a Greek team that would have a hard life in the Championship, we made them look like Barcelona last time we played them. I expect more embarrassment on the night.
Mata is still settling in at OT yet Moyes played him out of position and he was ineffective, Mata looked unhappy because he was unhappy. The expression of disbelief and frustration on both Fergusons and Woodwards faces said it all for me, either Moyes hits unexpected form between now and the end of the season or he has to go, it's really is that simple.
And your bang on the money concerning Fellaini, a knee-jerk reaction that became a farce, and Woodward must shoulder the blame for that.

I'm not smug, and I'm not getting carried away either.
I was at the Wigan game, and fully acknowledge how well Wigan played.

Comments about the many millions spent on the team have frankly become quite tedious - I know of another team quite nearby that has recently agreed a deal with a still firmly in contract player, whereby he's getting £34000 a day.
They also paid well over the odds recently for another player to then play him completely out of position when he actually gets on the field.

The same team is not going to get Champions League football next season unless they actually win the Champions League, which is looking very unlikely.
The revenue loss will hit them very hard.
The club's effective owners are already displeased with the large drop in share value because of the lack of success on the field.

I think the current manager may well have 2 games to win or be pushed.
He already has the air of "Dead Man Walking" about him, I think there will be an announcement next Wednesday, following the Manchester Derby.

Don't worry about us giving a player a pay rise, but if you want to know how much it has cost 'Sheikh Rattle and Role' to win silverware since 2008?
Man City net spend = £509.6 million. Compared to us 'paupers' across town only spending £80.45million (net) in the same period.

The values have increased considerably in recent years, but professional football has spent big on the transfer markets over the last 20-30 years, as your team's transfer record also shows.

The Sheikh has invested an enormous amount of money into the Academy infrastructure too, as you'll be aware if you've driven through the area lately.
The determination to succeed on a National, European and International level is immense, and the new academy complex is a massive statement of that intent.

LOL... Perhaps in your opinion, daftee! However, it certainly didn't look that way when you were putting the boot into Moyes ;)

Call me touchy, and I know how much you hate Man Utd, but I find it a little distasteful and unsavoury kicking a man when he's down. Like I've said before, perhaps it’s just me - I just don't get the whole 'hatred' thing in football, where its almost taken as a given that one has to detest one's rivals from the same town or city. For me, it's just a game of football (sport). I simply don't sign up to the whole ridiculous (almost tribal/neanderthal) rivalry amongst football fans.

As a lifelong, diehard, Glasgow Celtic supporter (my other team is Liverpool), born and brought up in Glasgow, I don't 'hate' Rangers, and neither did I gloat when they went bust and were relegated to the bottom division, so I just don't understand why Man City fans would 'hate' Utd, or vice versa, or why Mancs would 'hate' Scousers, or any other of those types of nonsensical (to me) social or football rivalries.

I just don't get that type of bitter rivalry, so for me, it's all trivial and unfathomable bullshite... It makes about as much sense to me, and is almost as pathetic and detestable, as the religious sectarianism in football I had to endure during my upbringing in Glasgow.

Very easily Stu, if not more. If Moyes rides the storm and has a job next season then i guess he'll spend £150 mill +. If he fails and gets the chop later in the season then the new manager will want to add players.

I'm simple highlighting the fact that if you throw enough money at a team you can buy silverware, more so when that money comes from a rich 'sugar daddy'.
I'm not jealous BTW, just envious. Instead of the natural development that a successful club goes through, i.e. success = increased gates and revenue over a number of seasons.
Instead the system is short circuited and vast quantities of cash pumped in from day one of take over.
But a lot of City fans who i know conveniently forget City's situation prior to Sheikh rattle and roles arrival, and act as if City have been a long established football power.

Talking to some of the more level headed City fans they are concerned about the bubble bursting, what if the rich Arabs lose interest in City at some point? Has Sheikh rattle and role got some emotional ties to City? Did he come from the Moss side slums and support them as a child? Did he have a life-long dream of playing for them?
Yes i agree with you this is a great time to be a City fan, enjoy it while it lasts, and if they should start to slide i dare say the 'supporters' will switch back to Chelsea...:D

There are only two teams in England who can consider themselves as being "a long established football power", based purely on their football achievements to date, and that's Man Utd and Liverpool! [At a push, you could also sneak Arsenal in there].

Man City, in that respect, are distinctly second division (sorry, Chris)! :eyebrows:

Lol... You might get the title yet, too - you never know. As Paul (Audioman) astutely pointed out earlier, Arsenal are the most consistent team in the league, and so are well capable of winning matches without playing well, whilst others around them drop unexpected points... ;)

In terms of Arsenal's position as a long-established football power, I think they've earned that status, just behind the 'big two', simply because they've performed consistently at a high level and won five league titles and two FA Cups. Let's also not forget how dominant they were in England in the 90s and early 2000s, during the 'Thierry Henry/Bergcamp years', or the fact that they reached the Champions League Final in 2006...

For me, all of that, not to mention their huge worldwide fanbase, qualifies them as being England's third biggest (and most successful) team :)

Take City's current spending power away, and Celtic are a more established football power than they are - at least we've won the European Cup, with a team full of Scottish daftees, not to mention reaching the UEFA cup final in 2003, narrowly losing out to Mourinho's Porto side, (and we play in front of 65,000 fans at almost every home game)!! :D

Agreed Marco. I talk to some down to earth City fans and they are over the moon at City's success, and they are very honest is stating why the club has been so successful in recent years.

Fair comment about Blackburn, they had the good fortune of having the late Jack Walker as chairman. A true soccer fan and wealthy to boot.
Sadly United have been in the grip of two business dynasties over the past 50 plus years who are more interested in a balance sheet than football.:(

Imagine if a football crazy billionaire oil baron took over at either Old Trafford,Anfield,or the Emirates? Having said that, what could be achieved if one of these oil barons took control of Stockport County or Tranmere Rovers?

Indeed, although I'm not sure that the required infrastructure exists at those clubs to turn them into genuinely 'big-time players', in terms of their world status as football clubs, anytime soon...

The Blackburn Rovers analogy is indeed pertinent. Like you say, what happens if Abdul Sheikh Ma Chamois, or whatever he's called, gets bored and takes his money elsewhere?

Remove the glory hunters, who like you say would quickly defect to Chelsea, should Man City lose their spending power, and I don't believe that they have a large enough loyal fanbase to sustain them long-term as a genuinely big club.

In that scenario, they would soon return to being little more than a mediocre mid-table side in the Premiership.

Quite so Chris, a 1-0 win would salvage some pride.....But only some.
With the team (and management) moral being so low expect ANYTHING to happen tonight, if the 'real' Utd turn up tonight they could knock four or five in....But i wouldn't hold my breath. My gut feeling is we will look like Accrington Stanley whilst they will look like Barcelona.:(

Didn't watch the match, so I can't comment further, but it's a decent result for Utd.
They'll have to win the CL Trophy to qualify for next season's competition - I still can't see them qualifying by their league position.

We'll have to see how things pan out in the draw on Friday.

Last nights result was just a blip on the United radar. Yes Moyes has redeemed the embarrassment of three weeks ago, and it might inspire some confidence for the coming league games. I still think he is a 'dead man walking'. West Ham won't be a pushover and i think we'll get trounced against City.

An interesting rumour is circulating around the executive boxes (again) about a take over in the summer.......

As much as I detest the scum it would make a nice change for any new manager to get some time to build. Let's face it, ferguson didn't leave the team in great shape. As I know all too well as a Chelsea fan, even if you win the Champions League you might not get a fair chance.

I realise passions run high in football and that we all have our individual loyalties but employing the word 'scum' in your posts when referring to a particular footie team is potentially provocative Andrew, therefore I would kindly request that you refrain from using it in the future. Thanks ;)

The rot certainly didn't start with DM's appointment, Ferguson was content toward the end of his career to 'make do and mend'. I'm not the only supporter who said at the end of last season 'how the hell did we win the title with that team?' Add to the fact that DM didn't take over until July when the transfer market was well and truly rolling, so he obviously didn't have the easiest of starts.
Sadly for Moyes the board will not extend the flexibility or patience it had with Fergie, he was one of the managerial 'Gods', Moyes on the other hand is a mere mortal, and therefore expendable. Maybe just maybe, if he can address the league rot and progress in Europe he will survive until next season.....It's a tall order.

Well, I never saw that result coming... Chelsea were awesome! However, there's a lot of football still to be played and I suspect a few more twists and turns before the season is over. Most significantly, we need to see what Man City do with their games in hand.

Liverpool were also superb today, and are most certainly genuine title contenders now. The threat they possess up front is quite frightening! However, coming from behind twice today showed that they also have a steely resolve about them and are willing to roll their sleeves up and fight to win, when necessary - an ability that all potential champions must have.

I was also very pleased to see Man Utd win, and in such a convincing manner against West Ham. What an amazing goal by Rooney!! :wow: There's no doubt that Van Persie will be hugely missed, but it's possible his absence might just galvanise the rest of the team and make them play with more togetherness.

It's all shaping up nicely for the Manchester derby on Tuesday. Regardless of whether Utd win or lose that game, watching them play today against West Ham, I can see a big change in them since the Olympiacos win, and I now fully expect them to claim a Europa League place by finishing in sixth position in the league, or perhaps even better....

Moyes and Man Utd are on the way up - of that I am certain, as indeed I am that he will eventually become a successful Utd manager... I'm determined to prove you wrong about Moyes, George, and I think that in time I will be proven right... Mark my words! ;)

Ever the optimist eh Marco? I agree Moyes will undoubtedly become a VERY successful Utd manager......He replaces Sam Allardyce at West Ham next season!
What a difference a few days make in a managers career, prior to the Olympiakos game the majority of pundits made impassioned pleas to get rid of Moyes.
Post match, and some of these pundits are saying that the club might have 'turned the corner' and suddenly we should stick with Moyes. Nothing like the good old fickle press.
Lets have a reality check, Utd have been abysmal on the pitch all season. The first Olympiakos game was bloody embarrassing, They are a tinpot side that the likes of Chelsea/City/Liverpool/Arsenal would be three up against at half time, and that's in the away leg. Reading some of the mid-week reports you would be excused for thinking we had beat Barcelona, Yes there was an improvement, but even a pitiful team will win the odd game. On the plus side maybe the win did inspire some confidence, the West Ham game should have been a difficult game for us, but only if you take our present league form into account. A Utd side firing on all cylinders should have been red hot favourites to collect three points.
The couple of positive achievements that Moyes can be credited with are the return to form of Rooney, and bringing the scouting system into the 20th century. Over the past couple of seasons the relationship between Fergie and Rooney had collapsed, and Rooney's form suffered badly.
So what if we have 'turned the corner'? Finishing is a Europa League spot is something a lot of us Utd supporters DON'T want. It's Europe's answer to the Carling cup, Playing Thursday night matches when a crucial Premier league match might be waiting on the Saturday could prove a serious handicap when trying to win the title and/or qualifying for the champions league. It could be argued that when a club has a major team rebuild (as we need) the Europa league is a gentle way of moulding the new team in preparation for the Champions league.I would prefer to finish as we are now.

If Moyes can inject some consistency and get the team playing well for the remaining eight games maybe he will save his job (and an army of rival fans will be praying this is the outcome) All he's brought to the club is a reputation of being a decent hard-working manager, beyond that his CV is full of blank pages. When Fergie was Moyes age his trophy haul was in double figures, including the cup winners cup and the super cup.
There are a lot of managers with much more substantial CV's who would relish the Utd job, Moyes is expendable and he's well aware of that fact. I would love to be proved wrong about Moyes, i would be delighted if he assembled a squad that had the hallmark of champions.......Sadly i just cannot visualise it.

Marco
23-03-2014, 11:00
Lol... Like I said to Stu, when it comes to Moyes, we'll just have to agree to disagree... On other aspects of football, though, we do agree.

However, I think there's about as much chance of Moyes being sacked this season as you have of getting into Angelina Jolie's knickers!! :D ;)

With just eight Premier fixtures left i agree that Moyes is probably safe until the end of the season, and in Europe we have the simple task of knocking out Bayern Munich. I feel sorry for Munich, all they have in midfield are a bunch of kids, we have Giggs and Carrick.....Boys against MEN!

Your right about me not having much chance of getting in AJ's knickers, she must be three or four sizes smaller than me!:ner:

So what's the result going to be tonight, chaps?

My money's on City, quite simply, for the sake of their title hopes, they need to win the match more than Utd - and in derby games the team that 'wants' it more, usually gets it!

Prediction: Man Utd 1 Man City 3.

Are you going to the game, Chris? :)

I sincerely hope that they do make a game of it, which I'm sure they will. I just feel that City's extra determination (should that prove to be the case) and need to win, coupled with their goal scoring prowess, makes them odds-on to win the match by a couple of goals.

However, if Utd can get a point, or even take all three, I'd be very happy :)
