Decent result for City.
The Rags played a lot better than last time too, although Fellaini should have been red carded for that atrocious elbow against Zabaleta :eyebrows:

Arsenal on Saturday ....

My prediction was close enough!

No surprises for me. City are quite simply a much better team at the moment, and as predicted, had the greater desire to win. For me, though, this doesn't change much for Utd, as it was a game they were simply never going to win.

What matters more is how they perform in their next game....

Well done to City. It's going to be a close finish for the title at the end!

I expect City to win comfortably on current form, too many good players injured as well, might end up in 5th?

Is anyone else staggered by the fact that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's red card (vs chelsea where he dived to save a shot) was downgraded to a yellow on the basis that the ball was going wide? I find this astonishing. That is blatant cheating and deserves a red card imo.

Yes,i think they can only give a red if it's going in.

How utd have got this bad beggars belief.

It didn't happen overnight Stu, a lot of blame can be laid at Fergies door. Déjà vu as far as i'm concerned, we had this toward the end of Busby's career.
Guardiola and Mourinho would have taken the Utd job had the club and Fergie shown more ambition and vision, both the aforementioned would have had problems but i guess not to the extent that Moyes is having. After last night it can be said that 'normal service' has been restored by Moyes.

To be fair i expected City to knock at least four past us so we've got off lightly. A lot of people are claiming that RVP being injured is a handicap for the club, it is but not to the extent that some may think, the real star this season has been Rooney by a country mile.

John
26-03-2014, 13:05
I was thinking that Utd major saving grace for Moyes next year is that it looks likekly that UTd will not be competing in Europe so giving a bit more time to recover compaired to the other clubs.
I still think if UTD are not in the top 4 next Christmas then Moyes will be out
If I was a UTD fan what I be concerned is how Utd are spending their money. Mata a good player but plays in the same space Rooney usually plays in. The less said about Maroune Fellaini purchase the better. my only thought is why? It just seemed like a panic buy. Utd have to do a lot better in the Transfer season

chelsea
26-03-2014, 13:10
Yes i realise this George.
They have just started to play so slow.
I can't see any direction moyes is taking them.
They look like they are just thrown on to the pitch and just hope something works.
I wouldn't say city are miles better than last year or chelsea, yet going into last nights game everyone expected at least 3 or more to be put past them.
That wasn't the case last year with the same players, what's changed.

Most realise moyes needs to spend at least £150 mil Plus.
He has already spent about £80 mil i think.
Fellani looks a complete joke and you will take a big hit when he is sold i think.

Jeez, George, if I'm the eternal optimist then you must be my pessimist alter-ego!! :eyebrows:

Furthermore, if you honestly expected to take anything from that game last night then you really are a big-knicker wearing daftee!

'Normal service' will be resumed when Utd take on opponents, following on from the wins against Olympiacos and West Ham, that aren't currently operating at a much higher football level than they are, starting with Aston Villa at home on Saturday, although that will not be an easy game.

The problem with Utd fans is that they've been spoiled with success for WAY too long, and so simply aren't used to, and can't handle, any disappointments. Try supporting a genuine 'diddy team' that, as a matter of course, are used to losing more often than winning, and see how you get on... :ner:

Or try being a Liverpool fan. We haven't won a league title for 24 years, despite, historically, being one of the most successful clubs in the world. Suffering all that time in the doldrums - now *that* is hard to take and something to moan about!!

Honestly, you Utd fans need to show some patience and look at the bigger picture, particularly the braindead balloons, shown on TV last night, screaming for Moyes' head. The good times will come back again, and soon, but for now, stop crying and learn to take temporary knocks on the chin!

Sorry, but it had to be said :)

Fair comment Stu, and a very realistic appraisal. We lack consistency because Moyes lacks experience at this level and his confidence is shattered.
Fellaini was a knee-jerk reaction, he was a big player for Everton but he is a small fish in a very big pond at Old Trafford. His style of play isn't compatible with the usual past paced passing game we used to play.
No doubt we will take a substantial hit when he's moved on, and i don't see a big queue forming to buy him.

Have a read of my comments in post 513 to see what i expected in 'the last game' Marco.:rolleyes:
'Pessimist'? Try realist mate, there is a level of managerial expectation amongst Utd fans that Moyes seems unlikely to achieve. We knew that a younger Ferguson had the potential even though it took him some time to get there, Moyes appears to bring nothing to the table.

'Normal service' will be resumed when Utd taking on opponents, following on from the wins against Olympiacos and West Ham, that aren't currently operating at a much higher football level than they are, starting with Aston Villa at home on Saturday, although that will not be an easy game.

'Normal service' will resume when we have a manager and coaching staff who can work at top level.

The problem with Utd fans is that they've been spoiled with success for WAY too long, and so simply aren't used to, and can't handle, any disappointments. Try supporting a genuine 'diddy team' that, as a matter of course, are used to losing more often than winning, and see how you get on... :ner:

NONSENSE! You either have a very selective memory or lack knowledge of the clubs history mate. I started supporting Utd in the 60's before we won the European Cup, the season after winning it we went into meltdown, we became the old first division 'whipping boys' season after season until we got relegated. |Talk about a crap team? i've seen less crap in a sewage works.

Or try being a Liverpool fan. We haven't won a league title for 24 years, despite being one of the most successful clubs in the world. Suffering all that time in the doldrums - now *that* is hard to take and something to moan about!!

Oh diddums! What a hard life for you poor Liverpool fans, must be heartbreaking not winning the league for 24 years, but i'll just jog your memory as to what you have won over the past 24 years eh?

3 FA cups
4 league cups
1 European cup (to add to the miserable haul of four previous wins....)
1 UEFA cup
2 UEFA Super Cups

No doubt about it, it's a hard life being a Liverpool fan.:ner::lol:

Honestly, you Utd fans need to show some patience and look at the bigger picture, particularly the braindead balloons, shown on TV last night, screaming for Moyes' head. The good times will come back again, and soon, but for now, stop crying, get a grip and deal with life!

Maybe they will return soon, but not with Moyes at the helm.

Hahahahahahaha... As an Italian Scot (and adopted Welshman), who'll be supporting Italy this summer, I couldn't agree more!! :D

As for the rest of your post, I made my point very clearly earlier, so there's no point in dwelling on it, save to say that what fans care about most is winning the league - the rest is merely 'froth'.

Therefore, most Liverpool fans would very willingly have swapped that European success for some league titles, which Utd have coming out of their ears, and should be bloody grateful for! :ner:

Like I said before, all your pish about Moyes will be getting cast up, big time, and shoved in yer 'boat race', when under him Utd eventually win the title - you have been warned! ;)

Talk to most Utd fans and it's the European Cup that counts. Yes the Premier league title is nice, but it's only a stepping stone to the 'big one'.

Two superb results this evening:

Liverpool 2 Sunderland 1.
Partick Thistle 1 Celtic 5.

That latter gives my favourite team the SPL title, with SEVEN games to spare! :champagne: :yay: :champagne: :yay: :champagne: :yay:

The former is a superb result for my second favourite team and puts us within one point of Chelsea, who along with City, should be afraid, VERY afraid, that those Scouse upstarts should sneak in and pinch the title from under their noses! :eyebrows:

good result in the end last night but a frustrating watch.
glen johnson was so wasteful , he needs to up his game big time.
still on course for top 3 though.
although 4th would meet the clubs expectations for the season, it does not guarantee champions league football.
having to play a qualifier would have an adverse affect on the summer transfer window too.

It was quite witty, with some relevant and insightful observations.

However, like I said before, (and George touched upon), City lack real pedigree, and will only be able to claim superiority when they start winning more trophies and begin to equal Utd's haul. Until then, they'll remain as Manchester's 'diddy team' ;)

Marco.

If pedigree is solely down to listing records of glories past then you're absolutely correct.
Fortunately football is more about the here and now, and right now Utd are looking like a bunch of pedigree chumps.

I'm quite content to support the diddy team.
I've supported 'em from being a kid, and I ain't gonna change now.

Marco
28-03-2014, 07:30
Past glories? Lol...

Utd are the current champions, having won the league only last year, and also in 2011 (not to mention numerous times recently before that). Furthermore, they won the Champions League in 2008, so if those are 'past glories', what current glories have Man City achieved which supersede that?

Also, how long do you realistically expect Utd to remain as "chumps"?

There's not a lot wrong with the team that can't be fixed pretty quickly, either by the present team and manager getting it together, or the appointment of a better new manager and players. Utd's problems aren't deep-rooted, therefore, their 'chump status' is merely a temporary blip.

Anyway, mate, it's only a friendly bit of banter, injected by me into proceedings, as a neutral, along with a healthy dose of realism, when I feel you're getting a little, erm, 'carried away'! ;)

If City do win the title, I'll be the first to offer you my congratulations!

Hey, George, what did I tell you? With the City match out of the way (a game that Utd were never going to win), 'normal service' has been resumed....!! ;)

Nice to see Mata get off the mark and open his scoring account, too!

Quite simply, at the moment (and this is only a temporary state of affairs), Utd are not good enough to beat any of the top three, but they're plenty good enough to take points off of anyone else, and on the back of good results against Olympiacos and West Ham, they back on track - and I expect that form to continue.

Crystal Palace 1 Chelsea 0 :yay: :yay:

Absolutely no doubt whatsoever. I've always said that next year will be 'judgement season' for him. All this 'sack Moyes' pish this season is just short-sighted nonsense - it simply ain't gonna happen, but if he doesn't get it right next year, he *will* go. I must admit,i didn't think liverpool would be in this position! They have been progressing well since the second half of last season and i thought 4th (if they kept suarez) would be a fantastic achievment! That looks like being in the bag and if we win today then we have a very good chance for the title! I'm still being a little reserved on that front as the sunderland game (and others) shows we are still vulnerable to sustained pressure and the odd goal or 2!!

Aye, that's what you call a title race! Wish it was the same up in Scotland...

Perhaps sense might eventually prevail and the 'powers that be' will at some point allow Celtic into the English Premiership? I don't see why Cardiff and Swansea get in and we don't - but that's an old story!

I have no doubt that the presence of Celtic would enhance the Premiership, especially as Rangers are out of the equation, whilst they sort out their financial problems and determine whether or not they have a future, and therefore there'd be none of the 'old firm' religious rivalry being brought down to England.

However, with Celtic, they have great (generally well-behaved) fans (and plenty of them), a superb 65,000 capacity stadium and a team that eventually could be challenging at the top of the league, so what's not to like?

Anyway, it'll be fascinating seeing how this year's Premiership title race unfolds! :)

Wales is a principality of England or joined with England if you like, Scotland is part of the UK just, but not a principality, though in September it may be independent of course.

Just to add that the term principality is not technically correct as that ended in 1542, Wales was then joined with England.

Its still often referred to as a principality today though.

Well, if Berwick Rangers (an English team) can play in Scotland, I don't see why Celtic can't play in England!! ;)

Would you agree that a team, such as Celtic, would enhance the English Premiership? I'm pretty sure that after a couple of seasons of sinking (what is it £30m a season, merely for being there?) buying better players with that money, and readjusting in a football sense, they'd be up there with the top teams in England :)

I agree, and it's devalued the league wins Celtic have had in their absence, as well as, with having no competition, made it harder for Celtic to maintain a higher standard of football.

It would be interesting, however, if someone could explain why Berwick Rangers get to play in Scotland, yet Celtic can't play in England. Just think of some of the mouth-watering fixtures there'd be in the Premiership at Celtic Park, in front of a 65,000 crowd, and how much the other teams would benefit from Celtic's HUGE (and generally well-behaved) travelling support...

I wouldn't even mind if we started in the Championship and worked our way up! :)

Well, if Berwick Rangers (an English team) can play in Scotland, I don't see why Celtic can't play in England!! ;)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berwick_Rangers_F.C.

Would you agree that a team, such as Celtic, would enhance the English Premiership? I'm pretty sure that after a couple of seasons of sinking (what is it £30m a season, merely for being there?) buying better players with that money, and readjusting in a football sense, they'd be up there with the top teams in England :)

Marco.

The reason Berwick Rangers play in the Scottish League because of logistics, nothing more.

From Wikipaedia ...

Despite being located in England the club plays in the Scottish Football League to make the distances travelled by fans shorter.

I think the SFA would also protest hugely if Celtic attempted to break into the English Leagues, and do everything in their power to prevent it.
Remember, this is the same SFA that blocked Scots players playing for Team GB in the Olympics, and the same SFA that took a "holier than thou" stance with Glasgow Rangers and their financial meltdown.

Celtic would be in the courts for years, and that's just fighting the SFA.
They'd have to try to win over the FA after that, and they could take some convincing too.
The travelling distance thing would most definitely be used as a counter argument by the FA, not that they really consider travelling logistics for supporters (as occurred in last season's FA Cup final - a post 5pm kickoff was not wanted by supporters of both teams).
It's not too bad distance wise from the Northwest of England, but from London or Southampton it's a different matter.

Marco

Hi Chris,

I think you're right on all counts, particularly about the stubborn intransigence of the SFA (and also the FA). Wankaz! :wanker:

However, in terms of Celtic fans, I don't buy the distance thing as being an issue. It probably takes longer (or just as long) to travel from Glasgow (or certainly the borders of Scotland) to Inverness [when Celtic play Caley Thistle], by car or bus, with the type of roads there are up there, than it'd take to get to London!

Furthermore, for the diehard Celtic fans (and there are tens of thousands of them), who follow the team all over Europe, a trip down to London or Southampton would be a piece of piss.....!

No, I think a lot of this is because the 'powers that be' would rather Celtic were 'kept in their place'/suppressed and not allowed to become the world football force they'd quite quickly develop into, if given continued access to Premiership millions and the type of players who'd want to play for the team in those circumstances, once the club was released from the shackles and backwaters of Scottish football - and into a much bigger (and more deserving) pond!!

:exactly:

It was quite witty, with some relevant and insightful observations.

However, like I said before, (and George touched upon), City lack real pedigree, and will only be able to claim superiority when they start winning more trophies and begin to equal Utd's haul. Until then, they'll remain as Manchester's 'diddy team' ;)

<Chuckle>

Marco.

Hello Marco, Nothing like a piece of well balanced objective journalism......And this is nothing like it. Mind you, i don't expect any different from Stuart Brennan.
Did anyone spot his (deliberate) omissions? He tried to imply that City had only spent £168M to build this team, sure the City starting lineup might have only cost £168M, but since 2008 the spending far exceeds this sum.

Brennan conveniently ignores the fact that the Utd starting line up has a player that Utd bought way back in 2002 (Ferdinand), so the £181M that Brennan claims Utd have spent works out at just over £15M per year compared to City's lineup (assuming that it dates back to 2008) works out at approx £28M a year.

Lets examine this claim....'when you look at the two line-ups in Tueday’s one-sided derby, it is clear the Reds have been spending their way to mediocrity – their starting XI at Old Trafford cost £181m, and a superior City team cost £168m.'

So Utd have been spending their way to mediocrity? How many trophies have Utd won since this 'mediocre' period started? Do we count from the signing of 'mediocre' Ferdinand in 2002? Or from 2008 when City started splashing the cash? And how does Utd's trophy haul compare to City's in either period?

Manchester Utd 4 Aston Villa 1 :yay:

Hey, George, what did I tell you? With the City match out of the way (a game that Utd were never going to win), 'normal service' has been resumed....!! ;)

Nice to see Mata get off the mark and open his scoring account, too!

Quite simply, at the moment (and this is only a temporary state of affairs), Utd are not good enough to beat any of the top three, but they're plenty good enough to take points off of anyone else, and on the back of good results against Olympiacos and West Ham, they back on track - and I expect that form to continue.

Marco.

Lets not get too carried away by Utd's win, if you'd watched the full 90 minutes you would know that the result flattered us. But a win is a win, Moyes and the boys need it.
We only beat Villa, normally at OT that should be routine mate.
You state we are not good enough to beat any of the top three. Thanks for the confidence vote, we are not good enough to beat any of the top six.
Tomorrow night will highlight how far we have really slipped at top-level, a cautious Bayern might settle for a 2-0 away win knowing full well that there is more chance of Stephen Hawking winning a gymnastics gold then there is of us scoring three away goals.

As for the title race? My head says City will do it, they have the strength in depth to pull it off. I really don't see the two games in hand being much of an issue for them.
My heart wants Liverpool to nick it after all the media hype surrounding City this season. You'll probably remember a few weeks ago the odd numpty of a pundit banging on about City being the 'best team on the planet'. If that's the case then Munich must be the best team in the universe, title already in the bag and a strong possibility of reaching the champions league final.

I think the main issue over the summer was the lack of decent transfers for Utd and last minute panic buy after all the people they were chasing fell through. IF Utd got the players they were linked too I think they would of been so much better

Well, 1-1 was a better result than you (or indeed I) thought 'the chumps' would get! Pity about that fooking late equaliser...

However, I thought Utd were unlucky with Welbeck's disallowed goal and thoroughly deserved to get a point against top-class opposition. They certainly weren't outclassed, which for me, coupled with their other recent good results, shows some real progress.

It'll be a hugely difficult game in Germany, as Bayern have an impressive home record, but you just never know...!

Accepting that Arsenal are now out of the equation my gut feeling is that Liverpool are going to grab the title this year, City and Chelsea are too inconsistent, especially away from home. For me Brendan Rogers and his team hit cruise control a while back and have looked comfortable ever since. With plenty of headroom to spare and barring a major disaster, Liverpool should lift the trophy with ease.

Oh god yeah, the games leading up to the end of the season are going to be a treat, and I don't just mean for those teams near the top, the relegation battle is really heating up now which is guaranteed to generate some cracking games too.

I am really disappointed with the way Arsenal have been playing of late and in many ways they have been the polar opposite of Liverpool, doing the bare minimum to stay in touch at the top which has left us vulnerable to Everton for the fourth spot, it's as if the team and management have given up... :(

Looking to the future, the top flight Premiership teams had better watch out when Leicester City win promotion, as they surely will, because they are on a mission. I've been watching them closely over the past few months and Pearson's men have been playing some delicious football which I'm sure would trouble all the teams currently fighting for the league trophy.

Well i didn't see that coming, neither did anyone else from what i can gather.
One of Utd's best performances this season, and that's not saying much really. Bayern showed control and composure, Utd showed determination and resilience.
For once we actually played WELL will it help save Moyes job? Two rumours coming from O/T (and not the tabloid rags) Moyes is safe and will have a job for the duration of next season regardless of league position. Or Moyes has until late November/early December to turn things around or he's out.

I hope the players can show the same spirit for the rest of the season and give us suffering fans just a little to cheer about. As for the next leg against Bayern, i think they will up their game and beat us, but if we play as we did last night at least we'll go out with dignity.

on the subject of Suarez, do you believe he is committed? or like me do you believe he is bound for pastures new in the summer?
i just think his complete turn around in attitude following the summer is because there is already a deal on the table.
i do not believe he just wants CL football. he wants RM or Barca, i reckon.

if he does go it should be at least what spurs got for Bale and i just hope BR spends it better than AVB.

Hi Simon,

I don't think a player, such as Suarez, would be the loyal type with any club. In that respect, if RM or Barca come calling, I doubt he could resist, especially given the kind of money that'd be on offer...

However, BR is a very clever manager and a great motivator, and so I think he could convince Suarez to stay for another season, and be part of a rather exciting period for Liverpool football club, as I sense some very good times are ahead (at long last!) ;)

I think that the biggest improved team this year, in the top half of the table, will be Liverpool. They've always been my second team (after Celtic) and I'd love them to slowly return to their glory days! :)

My top six predictions were slightly awry, however:

1. Man City
2. Arsenal
3. Chelsea
4. Man Utd
5. Liverpool
6. Tottenham (with Everton possibly level on points in 7th place, but with a poorer goal difference than Spurs).

I didn't suss the rise of Everton... Anyway, we'll see how it all ends up! :)

A dire performance from Arsenal today who forgot to bring a back four to Goodison Park, taking nothing away from Everton though who played superbly. We seem to have lost our belief :(

I don't understand Norwich's decision to sack Chris Hughton so close to the end of the season, especially considering their next fixture against Fulham is winnable. I know things haven't been going well at Norwich recently but letting your manager go five games from the end of the season is a bit shabby. Neil Lennon appears to be the bookies favourite to take over at City which would be an interesting development were it to happen, however it would be a massive blow for Celtic.

I've been saying for ages that Arsenal need a new manager, as Wenger has been past his best for a rather long time. However, I did think that he had one last 'hurrah' left in him before he went, which is why I thought he would pull out all the stops and deliver Arsenal the title this year.

Sadly (for Arsenal fans) that's not going to happen now, so Wenger really does need to go once the season is over, and make way for a new and younger manager with fresh ideas on how to take Arsenal forward, instead of the stale and ineffectual ones of a once great manager long past his sell-by date.

I'm afraid to say that's right, Wenger really should go and go quickly! After a disastrous 1st half with problems all over the pitch, what did he do? Nothing and waited till the 3rd goal before any changes?

When asked about it on MotD2 last night his response was not what I would expect from a guy who is hell bent on staying at his current post...

For me Aresnal have several issues
Only one plan Not really able to adapt to change the game (no Plan B)
A lack of leadership on the pitch. When Aresnal were at their best they had players who would battle no matter what
A lack of players so when injuries hit they are not really able to cope. This seems to effect Aresnal every season
A Manager that needs to move upstairs Arsen was a great manager when he arrived. He transformed the premership but the game has moved on and he Arsen is more driven by a philoshy of the game than a more pragmatic approach
My choice would be Klopp he is loyal makes the best out of his resources and will bring the passion back to the team

Celtic manager Neil Lennon is one of the bookmakers' favourites to take over in the long term. However, he told the BBC's Match of the Day 2 that he was not looking to leave the Scottish champions.

"It's always flattering to be linked with jobs," the 42-year-old said.

"I'm in a stable position at Celtic. I'm at a great club and it's a privilege to be their manager."

If that's what you were referring to, then you've interpreted his words rather differently from me.

Also, here (read the article and then play the sound-bite from BBC Radio Scotland of his interview after the Dundee Utd game): http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/26901903

Trust me, as a diehard Celtic fan I follow these things very closely, and Neil Lennon is currently totally focussed on finishing the season with Celtic, obtaining a record points total in the SPL, and then adding to the team during the summer for next season's Champions League campaign, so unless a more tempting offer than the Norwich job comes along, he'll be staying put.

Nope Marco, did ANYONE see it coming? And would anyone been brave enough to bet on that result?
Actually starting Mata in his natural position paid dividends, as opposed to playing him on the wing. Mourinho had that sussed, Moyes needed a few clues.
Leaving Giggs in the old folks home is a plus point too. Young Buttner needs more starts, the kid impressed against Bayern. And subbing Young (who shouldn't have started) for Januzaj was sound tactically too.

Prior to the Newcastle game, losing two out of five is hardly a 'great run' mate. Moyes the next Fergie? Get a grip man! Even a geriatric past his sell by date Fergie could run tactical and psychological rings around Moyes. The next Frank O'Farrell or Dave Sexton might prove more accurate.
We're having a minor 'run' at the moment, a very creditable draw against Bayern and a win against the Geordies, i think our run comes to an end tomorrow night though.
I just hope Gigg's and Fellaini don't start, we might just have a faint glimmer of a chance if the pensioner and the donkey stay on the bench.

I'm still backing City to lift the title. Their only potentially tough games are against both Merseyside clubs, the rest they should sail through.

Tough game today.

Liverpool bossed the game first 30 minutes, and played well for the last 10.

Suarez should have seen a second booking for that blatant shameful dive in our penalty area - I wouldn't mind, but the ref had the clearest of views of the incident.
It was also shameful the way he dived into the back of Silva, and then made it look as though the big nasty man had poleaxed him.
Luis Suarez today reinforced my opinion of him - he's a dirty, lying, cheating scumbag.
He'll never be a great player because he hasn't got the mental fortitude to play the game with honour, and I'm surprised the Liverpool crowd tolerate his antics.

Skrtel should have been penalised for a couple of incidents.
His dragging on both Kompany's and Fernandinho's shirts during one corner kick was a penalty incident, as was his punching away of the ball during another corner kick.

Henderson's sending off was an unfortunate but correct decision.

Liverpool's 3rd goal?
Vinnie scuffed the ball instead of putting his laces through it - sometimes these things happen
I'm pretty sure Vinnie is putting himself through the grinder right now - he shouldn't.

So it's advantage Liverpool.
And there's no denying that the title is theirs to lose now, so no pressure, eh? :eyebrows:

We're playing Sunderland on Wednesday night - I'm hoping we can pull it together following today's disappointment

I'm fully behind Arsenal on this issue - we had similar problems last season.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27028730

Why are supporters not given priority for the FA Cup Final?
They make the final the event that it is, yet have their noses shoved out at the main event.
I wouldn't mind, but an enormous amount of the tickets are given away within the FA at all levels. Bear in mind that we're talking right down to grass roots level here.

I'm confident Liverpool will raise the league trophy this year, it being the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster and all. The motivation for doing so within the club is palpable, as could be evidenced by the passion of Brendan Rogers during his speech at the memorial service. I found it very moving...

I like Liverpool and their attacking style but I have have to agree with you. Winning the Premier League now would be a hollow victory. To me it is better to come second or third with honour. It rubs me the wrong way because there is a parallel with the 'justice' system - the judges are so easily deceived.

Great to see Liverpool in top four. More chance to see their flamboyant attacking play in Europe. If they win the League, good for them too. The only downside for me is that they would also be contenders for the National diving competition as well.

I am a Utd. fan of over 60 years and I'm sad to say I forecast his failure from early in his appointment - no satisfaction in being proved right I have to say.
IMHO he was the wrong guy (sorry Fergie), his experience of the Premier League was mainly of surviving on a budget - not what Utd. needed. They could have afforded to pay a salary that would have attracted any manager in the world but chose Moyes - why?
Moyes then largely ignored the talented and experienced team he inherited - not perfect by any means and some well past their 'sell by' date - and try to remould them into a team built around Fellaini, his Everton man. Fellaini, who he??? Good player in some senses maybe but not a world class player (IMO) that justified completely rebuilding a new team and style of play around him.
Moyes' demise was inevitable as soon as it became apparent that his plan A was failing and he seemed to have no plan B, except to try and shore up plan A by signing Mata, with limited success.
It will be interesting to see if they appoint another Manager with potential or a proven one with success at the highest level - I know which option my money would be on.

£10m payout - not a bad reward for failure though is it? Not in the top banker league but not bad anyway :( .

He should never have been appointed Chris, remember that old adage.....'Big clubs need big managers', it's as simple as that.
There was question marks about Pellegrini being appointed, but at least he inherited a strong squad, and his style of football to attack the opposition. It's good to watch, which is more than can be said about Moyes predictable overcautious style.

Agreed, but it shows that even a geriatric Fergie could still inspire and motivate. Moyes never had the respect or control of the dressing room.

But they won the title easily 12 months ago.

Other teams were inconsistent, but it does not alter the fact that Fergie won the title with a poor side. Gigg's and Scholes being prime examples, add to that a weak defence and it was a shock we won anything last season.

Fair comment Dave, a lot of us got a shock at Moyes appointment, Fergie was a great manager but clueless at appointing a successor. As i've said time and time again 'Big clubs need big managers' remember what happened when Busby resigned the first time? We had Wilf McGuinness followed by Frank O'Farrell after busby's second stint, both proved useless. And let's forget about Dave Sexton.
Top contenders for the job are.........Louis Van Gaal,Jurgen Klopp,Diego Simeone, and Laurent Blanc
All the above bring experience and silverware to the table, especially Van Gaal.

The away goal rule means one of two (initial) strategies: One is to keep AM goalless, the other is to score two goals. I prefer the first strategy but the concern is a 0 - 0 Draw. Even with Cech I would not fancy a shootout - that Athletico goalie is an octopus.

Chelsea winning the next three games is a distinct possibility.
Now if City win all their remaining games in this scenario then they have the title. Reality check - we have to play Crystal Palace on their own patch, which is no mean feat, and then take all the points from a strong and confident Everton side at Goodison Park.

going back to the everton / city match. will everton be "up for it"?
it is unlikely they will beat arsenal to 4th now so do they really want europa league? (does any team?)
and do they really want to help us to the title?

Stratmangler

The Everton v City game is massive.
I can't see Roberto Martinez preparing a side to solely defend, and he will want his team to win.

The Palace v Liverpool game is massive.
Tony Pulis will have his players fully motivated to play to win.

The Chelsea v Norwich game will be interesting, and potentially massive.
Norwich more than threatened Liverpool during their recent encounter, and almost managed to cause Liverpool serious upset.
Neil Adams' players have everything to play for, and you never know, with their last 2 games they could cause some upsets and manage to stay up.
Mourinho will have to view Norwich as a serious threat, because if he doesn't he might find that they bite him on the bum.
Sunderland's game in hand might go against Sunderland - they're looking at three big games in eight days.

Two games left.
Nothing is taken for granted.
Villa on Wednesday night for us. We have to beat Villa.

Then we have to beat West Ham on the following Sunday.

I'm looking forward to being at both games.
C'mon City!

What bit about not taking things for granted is difficult to understand?
I have merely stated facts.
We have two more Cup Finals to come, and they're both home games, so I will be at both of them.
We have to win both games too.

C'mon City!

I'm under no illusions either - Villa are not safe from the drop, so they'll be playing for their lives.

Until I hear that Chelsea have beaten Norwich tomorrow then Villa pose a real threat.
And if Chelsea win then we have to beat Villa in order to lessen the Chelsea threat.

There's plenty of scope for things going pear shaped.
I wouldn't write off Liverpool's chances just yet ...

You've misunderstood me, mate. Remember when you were moaning about how City were out of it, after you'd dropped a few points recently, and I said that "It's not over until the fat lady sings"? Well, that's what I was referring to now, as in City are still very much in it! :)

There may well be another twist to come yet.
If Chelsea win tomorrow, and Liverpool get beaten on Monday (as Simon [Oldson] is expecting), what's the betting that Villa will come to ours and leave with 1 or 3 points?

Villa taking 1 point would be awful, but taking all 3 would be disastrous ...
I'm not going to point out the obvious.
The flipside scenario is that the other important fixtures go City's way and the title could be decided by City winning on Wednesday night.
I wouldn't care to guess which way it's going to go, I just know that there's still a way to go, and nothing can be taken for granted.

Regardless of what happens over the next couple of days, I am very much looking forward to Wednesday night's game.
I'm also hopeful that Sergio hasn't got a serious injury, and that nothing ails Yaya - they're both massive players for us.

I don't know.
I have a feeling that he might not have fully recovered from his injury in the Liverpool game.

i understand where you are coming from.
Suarez going may not be all doom and gloom, depending on the fee and how it is spent.
united should improve next year and ,like us this year ,they will concentrate on the epl without euro distractions.
chelsea will be my favourites for the title IF they buy 2 top class strikers.
city will be up there too.

City have to capitalise on this on Wednesday night.
Tonight was a great result for us, but we need calm heads and merciless, clinical finishing in the Villa game.

Liverpool should have shut the game down and dragged their feet, the same as City did at Everton on Saturday.

I tipped City to win the title earlier in the season (even though i wanted Liverpool to win it) and last nights result should spur them on, it really is City's to lose now.

I'm confident of a top seven finish for United now we have the new 'Guardiola' in charge for the rest of the season.:D

I had a Palace season ticket back in the early 90's and I will never forget watching Liverpool absolutely destroy them - think it was the first game of the season! So this result was very sweet for me indeed. 11th place for a team everyone thought was going down is beyond all expectation and hope Mr Pulis is now backed to take the club to the next level...

I took a shine to Poyet after the Capital One cup win against United. Golly, gosh, and crumbs! Those Sunderland fans who traveled to Old Trafford earned their reward.

On a note of black humour: The Telegraph's prognosis for the Norwich's last game is: "The final game of the season is now likely to resemble a wake ..."

The Liverpool 'defence' is surely a thing of wonder, but I actually like it inasmuch as it is part of the full package. And then there is Martin Skrtel. Just for starters he gives the opposition the shits for no other reason than his skull-like expression. And 'Blocked by Skrtel' is surely the most oft-used commentator's phrase in the entire Premier League. ("A good Old-Fashioned ... " would come a close second.) Finally, he helped redefine the SAS from 'Suarez and Sturridge' to 'Stirling and Skrtel'. His pinpoint accuracy into the goal is only tarnished by the fact that as often as not it is his own goal, but he is not the only player who is geographically challenged.

All in all a great season
I predicted Utd might struggle to get in the top 4 this year but I did not think they not get in the top 6
Their been 2 great escapes this year Sunderland and Palace both looked doomed but the new managers helped turn the team around
Next year I fear for Arsenal if they do not buy as Utd will be a very different team.
Next season could be even more competitive with Utd and Chelsea both being stronger
The team I enjoyed watching the most this year has been Liverpool but I think City strength in depth will be the difference

I didn't enjoy the antics of Suarez in either the home or the away match against City.
It's a pity that Clattenburg didn't have the balls to properly adjudicate the game at Anfield - Suarez should have been 2nd yellow carded for the farcical dive he made vaguely in the same vicinity as Martin Demichaelis.
