View Full Version : What's Your Latest CD purchase?...
Once I hit about 1,000, I started throwing away the jewel cases, and filed them all in plastic slip cases with the booklet, the back notes are all filed in boxes in the loft. Think I got to about 5,000 before I pretty much stopped buying CDs “blind”. All ripped to FLAC now, playing a CD is almost as nostalgic as vinyl now!
I've got about 2,500 and ran out of 'partner acceptable' storage space a long time ago. :( How do you store your re-housed CDs, so you can quickly find what you want to play?
They’re all in cd storage boxes, that would normally hold about 20, but can go to about 100 “un-jewelled”. They have a label “hole” so I put labels in. ;) A-Z, various, etc. Then they’re all in a big bookcase. I’ll try and take a picture tomorrow if I remember. :)

Golden age indeed, and tempting though it is to pay someone a monthly fee to listen to their music collection, I still prefer to own them myself.

When I was working in Botswana in the 80's Hugh Masekela was a political exile in the capital Gaborone (apartheid was still in place).
He used to play a set in the local pub, the Bull and Bush (really) on weekends. I made several recordings on my Sony Pro Walkman but sadly they got lost on one of my many relocations!
Hugely underrated musician.

no, Karajan would have been md i think. it was recorded 57//58 i think. Fricsay was the md of the Bavarian state opera. This is DG's first stereo recording of the BP.

ZZ Top 'Raw' is the session from the documentary 'That Little Ol' Blues Band From Texas' made in 2019.
The band were asked to go to a small Texas venue for a photo-shoot. When they got there the equipment was already set up, so they played some songs for the hell of it, not realising that they were being recorded.

Cheers Grant - if I like the album I've ordered I will follow it with yours and Geoff's recommendations. Ms. Ronstadt seems to have stayed under my radar all these years, but no doubt I will recognise some of her stuff when I hear it.

I would probably seek out original copies, even though that way would be more costly.

I have bought several of the Original Album Box sets. Quality has always been good. Only downside is that some come in cardboard sleeves. Not a problem for me as I always rip to flac and put originals in storage.
Set also has Living in the USA recorded one year later. Not a single filler track on either album. This woman could sing. So sad that she cannot perfrorm anymore.

I just looked at the Amazon ratings for this box set. 80% gave it a 5 star rating and a further 14% gave it 4 stars. I would say that was a pretty good rating!

Many may already have albums by Yusef Lateef but if not this is an excellent buy of some of his early recordings which are better because the recording process was simple and aimed at sound quality not radio plays . Eight albums over 4 CD's only the live recording is slightly below par .

The Elbow, Katie Melua and Madonna CDs were all there in Lytham's charity shops, but I already have them. BHF had this up for 3 quid, but I got it from Oxfam next door for 99p.

I won't pay more than £1, unless it is something rare.
DVDs are often sold in charity shops as "Four for £1", and sometimes the same offer applies to CDs. The trouble is I can often find one or two that interest me but not four, so not really a bargain.

At least you can get what you want - Shopping for decent CDs in charity shops is about as fruitful as salmon fishing in the Manchester Ship Canal. At least round here it is.

"Smoke & Mirrors" by The Eden House (2009); on CD which has now been ripped to FLAC files. Female fronted "Goth Prog" (?!?). The album was mastered by Andy Jackson (he of Floyd's back team) who also played guitar when the album was toured.
From "Songs For The Broken Ones" (2017 album), "The Ardent Tide" may or may not tickle the musical taste buds (AFAIK, no involvement from Jackson this time):

It's like the world's best pub band. Ry Cooder, and Duck Dunn are on it.
It's very understated even by the standard of Clapton solo albums but it's grown on me over almost forty years. Probably my second favourite of his after '461 Ocean Boulevard.'

Yeah, I went off Amazon reviews, which rated it to be better than the following album (Caracal), which I already have and find a bit meh. Better than meh is not exactly a glowing recommendation, and I should have kept me three quid in me pocket.

I was quite pleased to find a copy of that amongst my stepdad's old crap last month, then disappointed to see that the CD inside was a CD-R with what looks like a six year-old's attempt to write Michael Jackson in magic marker on the disc :(
I remember my stepdad had a phase of copying stuff off tinternet, using a file-haring site with the name Lime something or other. I'll not bother trying it.
Why not? Either the CD-R disc will sound OK, or it won't.

Because I remember what that file-sharing site was like. MP3 files of varying quality which were only just good enough for my iPod. I don't have a reference, but I'll see if Macca wants to do a comparison with his copy on Sunday, and report back.

Been after that 'crop circle' Led Zep for a long time, I reckon they are the best masterings.
'L.A Blues Authority' I've got no idea about but I always like to get one total unknown in the selection and it's a good name.
Might have 'Argus' already now I think about it.
Most are original release which are usually the best master.
Paid average of £4.50 for each one, not too bad.

When I say he has a lot of stock I mean you can hardly get in the door. Mostly vinyl but there is a lot of CDs to go through too.
Worth a long trip if you are looking for rare vinyl, would take you a full day to go through the lot mind as there's practically no organization.

The mate I lent my "Crop Circles" CD to is the same bloke I gave my old B&W floorstanders to, which could have got me £300 all day long. Also half of his CD collection has been given or lent by me. And yet whenever I go round the stereo is off, and they're just sat there complaining that there's nothing decent on the telly :doh: you can lead a horse to water... I need a mates upgrade.

I've just pruned my Zep collection, gone from 3 to 1 LP now, shedded 3 +4, and kept House of the holy. I find that dirge like heavy rock music quite boring nowadays. Holy was good though, more clean sounding.

We weren't nice people back then.We had a similar experience once on a small ferry from Tenerife to La Gomera. The ship was rocking up and down and sometimes side to side. It was bearable, but one guy had big problems and was lying on the deck groaning. About every 5 minutes his mates came round to laugh at him! They were obviously nice guys!

This Japanese issue of their 1991 LP 'Blood' is the best packaged CD I've ever owned, jewel cases really are shite aren't they? This was only a fiver new from Ebay, I strongly recommend it

DR 12/12/13 - by comparison the 2020 so-called 'Hi res' download is a 7/7/8 and the 2003 remaster an 8/7/8. Which isn't terrible for rock music, but why have cotton when you can have silk?

Back then Hawkwind were regulars at Preston Guild Hall - I must have seen them four times there. Just about the only decent act to perform there.
The Public Hall was closed and the new Guild Hall built (around 1972), and I think the council were far too precious about their smart new venue. From what I remember Status Quo were invited to never return due to being too loud, David Bowie was banned because his fans trashed the place, and when Roxy Music played there, their PA stacks were in danger of toppling, and the roadies drilled holes in the stage so they could be lashed down. After that there was only really David Essex and Elkie Brooks left, who performed there even more than Hawkwind.
I may be misremembering some of these facts, the 70s were strange times :)

I saw them in 1988, post just about everyone except Brock. 1986 to 1996 were my gigging years, only been to a handful since then.

Yes, but not by much. Not as bad as it was, and he's cleared the area just to the right of the entrance so he's got somewhere to sit and also display some merch.
You still have to properly dig and re-arrange the piles to find anything but I've sort of got used to that now.
Total treasure-trove for anyone into vinyl but I'd allow the best part of a day if you want to go through everything in there, there's a lot!
When he had the old shop, the upstairs was 'All albums a quid.' It was an otherwise empty room with several thousand albums just piled everywhere. I did two four hour sessions and pulled about 100 albums of which all but two were pretty much mint once cleaned on a Moth. I doubt any of them are worth less than a fiver now.

I have Never Loved Elvis but haven't played it in decades. Wonderstuff's drummer Martin Gilks was rated one of the best drummers in the world, and had a knack of making it look so effortless imo. Then he went and crashed his motorbike and died.

Story behind that.
I got it new on vinyl in about 1985 from WH Smith in Church Street, Liverpool. Which at the time had a very large record department.
There's a CBS 'Nice Price' re-issue of it as well. Identical front cover but the back covers are different. On the original it says:
'Throughout, the tracks were recorded and mixed to have their most profound effect at maximum volume.'
The re-issue omits this message and has some other minor differences.
Anyway I had the original and very good it sounded too. Years later when I was renting a big house I had student lodgers. One liked the record so much he went out and got his own copy.
Some years on again I came across it while looking for something to play but it didn't sound half as good as I remembered. A few weeks later I played it again thinking me or my system had been having a bad day.
Still didn't sound good. It was only when putting it back on the shelf I noticed the back cover. No message about the recording!
Slowly realised that way back when, my original release and the lodger's 'Nice Price' copy had got swapped over. Deliberate or not? I'll never know now.
Interestingly this CD copy I have just got does have the message reprinted in the booklet except it reads:
'Throughout, the tracks were recorded and mixed to have their most profound effect at maximum'
They just cut the word 'volume' off. Which is either odd or just sloppy.
The back cover has the 'Compact Disc' logo on so it's probably the original CD issue. Sounds good but not as awesome as I recall that original vinyl being.
It does have easily the best ever versions of 'How Blue Can You Get', 'Why I Sing The Blues', and 'The Thrill Is Gone'.

3CD 40th Anniversary 2019 release of Superman The Movie soundtrack by John Williams.
Grew up with this music and big fan since seeing the film in the Cinema in 1978 with my Dad.
Heard it played live several times too.
Turns out Warner archivists found pristine original 24 track Master tapes of the original recording, and knowing that was a big deal they set about retransfering the Soundtrack from those original masters.
This was released for the 40th Anniversary of the film on a limited run of 5000 copies.

CD3 is a retransfered version of the Original Soundtrack released just after the Movie came out, as it was...missing tracks and all.
Very, VERY cool, the Guys behind the mixing desk get it.. this really is the version to get.

So when I saw a SEALED copy from a UK Seller with 100% feedback - for a price that wasn't taking the piss...(not QUITE the price of a Kidney but still?) I pulled the trigger.
Have it on a good vinyl pressing, but my new CD Transport has got me rethinking about CD again as the best sounding format, so very interested in this when I saw it.
Had many CD and vinyl versions over the years (and cassette!) and from reading about this is far and away the best this music has sounded.
Everyones got THAT piece of music that means something to them, this is mine.

Crate digging at boot sales is exactly that - wading through boxes of 'tut' in the vain hope of finding something good. Private sellers will display their CDs on a table, so it is easy to see what they have. House clearance traders just plonk down two or three boxes of CDs on the ground, all jumbled up with DVDs which makes it a pain to go through, and I think in ten years I have only bought a couple of CDs there.
Charity shops on the other hand, will often have more limited stock, but it is put out on a shelf so is easier to assess, AND they are a lot cheaper (typically £1, or even 20p or 50p). As I said some of the charity shops in London have some very interesting (to me) CDs for sale; owing to it being very much a multi-cultural city.

As a Tarantino fan, love the music to his films.
Some more than others though, in particular, LOVE the music to Kill Bill Volume 1, though Vol 2 is good as well.
Was always disappointed by the official Soundtracks though? :scratch:
A lot of the best music in the film was its original score by RZA, but it’s mostly the songs on the soundtrack CD.
Missing all the good stuff, and a lot of what’s there has been chopped our has a voiceover ruining it.
Turns out I wasn’t the only one thinking… “Wouldn’t it be great IF…?”
Found out (by accident) browsing through a Tarantino forum there was a short run Release of the extended soundtrack, a 2CD version which had all unreleased music from the Kill Bill Volume 1, as well that for Volume 2.
So effectively the “Musical Score” 2 CD version with the missing music to both films.

Was curious about this CD, so dug about and found some info on that Tarantino forum.
Apparently Robert Rodriguez, Director and buddy of Tarantino, enjoyed the music too.
He got together with the films composer and compiled a ‘complete” collection of music from the film, and put it out as a limited CD run for fans of the film.
Very Cool.
So alongside the ‘official’ release of the soundtrack with the cool songs,
There’s also a companion CD set having all the accompanying music from the movie on CD.
Found a mint copy of this double CD “Grail” on EBay this morning, so thats my Birthday present to myself sorted.

I have my favourites, like the one used for the final fight with Oren Ishii, and the song towards the end of Kill Bill 2 which sounds like a cover of The Zombies' "She's not There".

First time I've been in there in about 20 years as it's in the next town over and I don't have cause to go there much, six mile round trip so I'm feeling that a bit now.
They've got lots of vinyl. Was wondering if they'd have any CDs at all but they did. Not a massive selection though.
Ironically like it used to be back in 1984 except now the vinyl is twice the price of the CDs instead of the other way round.
Think there was one other customer over the age of about 25.

I think Mary J. Blige is one of the best living female singers, but I'm not too keen on the type of music she performs on. Though I'll make an exception with this, Mary J on top form on Jools Holland. Sung with proper feeling...

10 for a quid is amazing. The two here are 3 for a quid in one and a quid each in the other.
I cleaned them out of anything half decent ages ago and neither has restocked since as far as I can tell.
They might just have had some more donations consisting exclusively of Robbie Williams, Michael Buble and Tom Jones though. Wouldn't notice that.

A couple of years ago my daughter got me watching a Netflix fantasy drama series called The Umbrella Academy. I hadn't appreciated that MJB was an actress as well as a singer and in that series she has a prominent role (kind of deadpan comedy-drama) and plays it really convincingly.

You can always give those that you don’t like to another charity shop: at 10p each it won't have cost you much.

I would normally avoid sealed ones too (unless new) but in this case it was those or something like Robbie Williams so I took the gamble. I do need to have a clear out so a few may find their way to a shop that asks for more than this one, might as well maximise the value of my donations.

The Shamen! I did security for them, but it was way before that album came out. They were only on for about forty minutes which suited me as it meant an early off.
At the soundcheck they tested their sub-acoustic bass rig, that was an experience, but they didn't use it for the actual gig.
Quite like their stuff I'll have to look out for that one and 'En-Tact', which I used to have on tape.

I did for loads of bands most of which I don't remember. Sometimes you'd get stuck on the dressing rooms so you'd miss the gig. Amazing how many punters think they can walk into the dressing rooms though.
Off the top of my head there was Bob Geldof, Jules Holland, Thunder, Neds Atomic Dustbin, De La Soul (someone set off the fire alarm just before they went on, that was a nightmare) and countless others.
One that sticks in my memory was Carter USM as they had organized stage diving which was insane - although that was my night off but I liked the band so went to see them anyway. No need to pay when you know the blokes on the doors!
Oh and Janet Jackson - she was lovely. I still have a complimentary 'Rhythm Nation 1814' biro somewhere.

A Japanese Discogs seller had something pretty rare,
a “new” (from 1994) sealed copy of one of my favourite soundtracks, Akira.
Yeah, it was “NOS” … but 100% worth it.
A few different versions, big thread over on the Steve Hoffman forums about the best one, and this is it.
Great sound quality as well.

You can't beat records or CDs with Japanese writing on them. It's so exotic. Sadly I don't have any.
You should have gone to HMV in Tokyo. It's 5 stories high with an amazing selection of CDs. All you had to do would be to ask a sales assistant there where you would find it: the staff are unbelievably helpful, and no doubt, would have gone with you to pick up a copy.
When I was last in Tokyo (quite a few years ago now), I virtually 'maxed out' my credit card buying CDs as well as other shopping, as they only accepted creditcards and not debit cards!0
I have also visited Studio Gibli, where a lot of the Manga animations are made.

I don't know anything about them either. I think some people try to source the Japanese CDs of some albums since at least some are supposed to be 'better' but I've never gone into it in detail. I'd guess it's mostly myth. But yeah they do look cool.
I have the first 3 or 4 Madonna 7” singles on Japanese vinyl, there was a big thing in the mid 80’s about Japanese records being pressed on “virgin” rather than recycled vinyl, and therefore sounding better. Sadly, “Like a Virgin” I don’t have!

You'd expect the engineers in the Japanese pressing plant to be scrupulous too. I think for vinyl it makes sense but CD I can't see it unless the mastering is different just for Japan. Maybe that has happened? Or maybe they got earlier generation master tapes than other parts of the world?
I have had 'obi' strips on several LPs and CDs. As far as I am concerned, they are a bloody nuisance, something to be removed before you can play the record. So they are removed and thrown away - I couldn't care less about resale value.
The discs are for my enjoyment, not anybody else's.

My Led Zep Houses of the Holy has a 'Led Zeppelin' obi strip on it. Not Japanese though. I agree, it's a bloody nuisance.
Another Japanese import, the music on this is BIG.
Saw the movie in IMAX and it was terrifying, moving and epic.
The music is exactly the same.
Again,
Glad to have the Japanese release of it, just because of the movie.
This is the 2CD special edition, with extra cues used in the movie but not on the original soundtrack.
Fans of the film had a letter campaign to the filmmaker to make all the music used available. he listened and used his clout to make it happen.

I dislike 'digipaks'. Silly old me but when I buy something new I like it to look new to begin with and then mangling it can be my decision; the chain of events from warehouse to doormat means that a lot of CD digipaks seem to end up battered.
As a result, for older albums I shop around for jewel case versions for which the plastic can be replaced if needed. This week I picked up a late '80s copy of Black Sabbath's 'Eternal Idol'.

Tony Iommi delivered a few stinkers in the '80s as different band members came and went, but this effort with Tony Martin was on good form.

The 3rd CD was wrapped up inside one of the other ones.
No jewel cases, so hard to tell first glance.

Took a daft turn and jumped in the car for a weekend trip to Wales,
Popped in to Portmerrion, hadnt been there for years.
There was a music festival that night, Jools Holland, Squeeze and a few others playing, but didn't know about it and couldn't get a ticket.
Big fan of the Prisoner TV series filmed there, so always fun to visit.
Picked up this when down there, always liked the music and hadnt seen this 'complete' edition before. 6 CDs worth - crikey!
