Thanks for fulfilling my request Paul, proper nice that is and love that unusual plinth,
that Tron phonostage is some size, whats that thin box with Blue LED?.
I'm very biased, but a 401 is one of the most beautiful turntables ever and yours is a superb example. :)

very nice 401 looks superb -

Indeed, David, although purely in terms of appearance, I prefer these. It'll be what I'm buying and popping into a suitable plinth, when I embark on my next T/T project:

It's the strobe markings around the platter I don't like on the 401 (much as I also dislike them on the stock Techy platter). I think that they cheapen the look of the turntable. Personally, I prefer the Garrard platters without strobe markings.
Anyway, regardless of that, Paul, you've got a very nice and superb turntable there. I like what you've done with the plinth - well done and enjoy!
Marco.
That's really nice Paul .... My next upgrade is the phono, knowing you have used the EAR, the Tron must be an improvement on it ?

True that :D

Is it specifically the grey hammerite you'll be going for Marco?
Another Garrard / PU7 partnership, I approve :) It's beautiful.
I used to use the Music Maker with a Hadcock and a 401, lovely combination. Do you ever find you get Grado Wobble issues with it though?
Yup, Dave, the grey hammerite is the one, as it's suitably 'sombre' looking, in the BBC tradition (I detest bling), and the cream ones look a bit too 'girly'. Here's a similar one in a nice wooden plinth:
http://img542.imageshack.us/img542/9113/plinth003.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/542/plinth003.jpg/)
Although, plinth-wise, I prefer something like this:
http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/2305/plinth033.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/826/plinth033.jpg/)
Whatever wooden plinth I choose, however, will feature a layer of slate sandwiched into the middle of it, as I reckon that will be 'the ultimate'.
My intention then is to fit an EMT 'banana' 12" tonearm, like this (which will also take my SPU Royal GM MKII):
http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/7112/emtn.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/820/emtn.jpg/)
I've always loved those - visually beautiful, IMO, and most likely also sonically!
...and fit an EMT JSD5 cartridge:
http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/1554/jsd5.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/833/jsd5.jpg/)
That's the plan, anyway. It's a project for sometime next year. Anyway, this is Paul's gallery thread, so let's not hog it any further :)
Marco.
I MUST trawl through the old mags hifi dave has and do some scans...
The 301 I think, has the better or more tolerant motor, which IIRC is better with mains voltage drifting than the 401. I also like the grey hammerite 301's, but the 401 in a window display (Tee Vee Sound in Hemel Hempstead in the mid 60's) was the very first proper HiFi grade deck I ever saw (where's the arm???)
The 401 in original post is lovely - well done and I'm green :D
Oh yeah, the Tron ain't bad either...

Hi its a Linn Klimax Renew Ds...I am very short of space since having to vacate the spare bedroom!! and bring my AV & two channel together not ideal I know...

I went from my Majik 1 int phono stage to EAR 834p then upgraded the EAR with Telefunkens Ecc83's then there was the upgrade to the Tron Seven which was a massive
My next TT project is well under way, GL75 with PTP toplate and RC plinth and 12" Jelco arm with Oyaide headshell fitted with a Benz cartridge, smashing.
One of the deck on its own.....http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b117/pidge22/P4120003.jpg (http://s18.photobucket.com/user/pidge22/media/P4120003.jpg.html)

Sounds good, dafteeee! Love Goldring idlers, but my fave is the GL99 (a far better T/T than the GL75, IMO):

Observe the engineering quality:

Those things have an amazingly visceral and 'gutsy' sound, which I love! :)
Marco.
I love these too, but I suppose the 401 overshadowed them :(
Te 301 and 401 appear to have been designed for 24/7 running non-stop and I suspect many broadcast ones were used just this way.

I'd have liked a grey 301 but ended up with a cream grease bearing one instead (no strobe), and I think it's better looking than the grey now (although mine needs repainting).

AFAIK the EMT arms use the old Ortofon A style headshell which has a shorter overhang and the pins are in a + rather than an X - so not sure it will fit.
Those long SME pattern headshells look a bit 'girly' to me anyway ;-)
Very nice paul.
How are you getting on with the red beard bearing?

Yes, should have said that too - lovely looking 401 and I really like the look of those AO arms.

Hi Partick,
Lol@ 'girly'. It would fit with a suitable adaptor - either that or I'll buy one of these to go with the arm: http://www.needledoctor.com/Ortofon-SPU-Synergy-A-Phono-Cartridge
:)

The EMT 997 arm (the "Banana") is available with either the Neumann 'diamond' contact arrangement (as used by EMT) or the Ortofon/SME arrangement.
It is not clear if 997 arms fitted with the SME contact arrangement have the correct geometry to allow the use of SME-style headshells.
My word those are stunning turntables very nice :)

Ah, thanks for the clarification, Barry. Good to know :)
