Indeed, David, although purely in terms of appearance, I prefer these. It'll be what I'm buying and popping into a suitable plinth, when I embark on my next T/T project:

It's the strobe markings around the platter I don't like on the 401 (much as I also dislike them on the stock Techy platter). I think that they cheapen the look of the turntable. Personally, I prefer the Garrard platters without strobe markings.

Anyway, regardless of that, Paul, you've got a very nice and superb turntable there. I like what you've done with the plinth - well done and enjoy! :cool:

Another Garrard / PU7 partnership, I approve :) It's beautiful.

I used to use the Music Maker with a Hadcock and a 401, lovely combination. Do you ever find you get Grado Wobble issues with it though?

Yup, Dave, the grey hammerite is the one, as it's suitably 'sombre' looking, in the BBC tradition (I detest bling), and the cream ones look a bit too 'girly'. Here's a similar one in a nice wooden plinth:

Although, plinth-wise, I prefer something like this:

Whatever wooden plinth I choose, however, will feature a layer of slate sandwiched into the middle of it, as I reckon that will be 'the ultimate'.

I MUST trawl through the old mags hifi dave has and do some scans...

The 301 I think, has the better or more tolerant motor, which IIRC is better with mains voltage drifting than the 401. I also like the grey hammerite 301's, but the 401 in a window display (Tee Vee Sound in Hemel Hempstead in the mid 60's) was the very first proper HiFi grade deck I ever saw (where's the arm??? :lol:)

The 401 in original post is lovely - well done and I'm green :D

Oh yeah, the Tron ain't bad either...

Hi its a Linn Klimax Renew Ds...I am very short of space since having to vacate the spare bedroom!! and bring my AV & two channel together not ideal I know...

I went from my Majik 1 int phono stage to EAR 834p then upgraded the EAR with Telefunkens Ecc83's then there was the upgrade to the Tron Seven which was a massive

Te 301 and 401 appear to have been designed for 24/7 running non-stop and I suspect many broadcast ones were used just this way.

The EMT 997 arm (the "Banana") is available with either the Neumann 'diamond' contact arrangement (as used by EMT) or the Ortofon/SME arrangement.

It is not clear if 997 arms fitted with the SME contact arrangement have the correct geometry to allow the use of SME-style headshells.
