Best solution to split pre-out into 3 inputs for Tri-Amping

HI All,

Sure someone here has Tri-Amp'd and was wondering if anyone has found a good quality solution to splitting the pre-out into 3 ?

Also interested in a RCA switch box that will cope with taking 2 pre-outs in and feeding by manual / remote or auto selection and single out. Aim of this is to mimic what I have with my NAD C272 which is 2 seperate manual switchable which I feed from 2 different pre's depending on if it is AV or HiFi I want fed to the fronts.

Have already found the little gold plated splitters but then this would involve loads of single cables in between the amp's input, at which point I am thinking better to have a 2-6 cable made up from some reasonable cable ?

Try a powered distribution amp or matrix switcher.

Thanks MArk, how does that overcome splitting the single input to 3 for the power amp.

I have Monitor Audio Gr60's and soon to arrive is a Rotel RB-976 Power Amp.

A distribution amp will buffer the signal and send it to different outputs.

A matrix switcher is more flexible. You could switch any of the inputs to one or more outputs at the same time. Most will allow you to store configurations that you can recall easily.

I made a little box up with five pairs of sockets........four pairs of outputs commoned to one input. That way three power amps and a headphone amp can be connected.

Ok, making up a box is an option I had not thought of yet, I just sent an enquiry to a cable company to have a 2:6 RCA RCA cable made.

Will have a poke around Mark on your suggestion, any obvious brands you already have experience with ?

Seems if I actually did my homework I would realise that the soon to arrive RB-976 can be set to run all 3 from a single input, that solves that problem just have to put a good switch in place to go from the AV to HiFi pre now :-)

Ebay or Amazon would be a place to look. I used to work for a company, Extron, that made them. They are too expensive new, but you do find them cheap 2nd hand. Kramer are not too bad as well. I worked for them for a short while as well.

The only electrical obstacle for me (from a distance) is the ability of the preamp to drive the three amps as a parallel load, which ducks the input impedance it sees right down. Maybe nothing to worry about in your case, but for other people wishing to try this, a pro-studio grade distribution system would be well worth looking out for since modern line-buffers shouldn't take or add anything noticable bearing in mind the potential advantages of bi/tri amping.

Thanks Dave R, I am assuming the Rotel Power with this daisy-chain function is dealing with the input impedance issue can't wait for it to arrive now and see how these GR-60's sound tri-amp'd, might even give the Linn K600 cable I am selling a go as doesn't seem to me much interest

The K600 is a low gauge fig 8 trio in a humungous and very ugly black jacket. best used as a tow rope in all honesty, as three separate lengths of white Fisual 2.5mm or green Talk 3 will comfortably out-perform it outside of a mechanical sounding old Linn aktiv system :lol:

XLR inputs from your source , as this is a Pro unit XLR outputs
you can get phono rca to xlr cables easily or rca/xlr adaptors

3 x XLR outputs for your power amps

new just over £200 quid for the ultradrives or they do come up for less on ebay

yep posted the explanation in the welcome area I think, but used to be a GSXR750, now Bandit 1200, Speed Triple 1050 along the way.

See if I can find one on the cheap then have to invest in the cables, I am guessing I will have to go RCA to XLR the XLR to RCA and then all will be at one in my world.

yes 1 x rca/xlr on source then 3 x xlr/rca to power amps , unless you use hifi source/amps with balanced Xlr connections

Which was a bargain if I am seeing the price right on my searches, anyway hopefully this will do the trick.

Quick update the matrix switch is working fine except for it is feeding a nice power switch spike to the amp so now critical which order I turn stuff on which given my RB-976 doesn't have a trigger function will be a PITA :-(
