Woke this morning and switched my Sony laptop on VPCEB4E4E, Windows 7 OP and I found the mouse wasn't working (it was working ok last night and the built in mouse is Aok) so I hooked up another mouse a Windows wireless one and its not working either. I then tried running a USB Dac - it powers ok but no sound. I tried a few other items that derive power from the USBs and they power up ok. So the issue seems to be with the data transfer aspect of the USBs functionality.

Anyone any ideas and can you give me a blow by blow idiots guide to trying to sort this.

Might be worth taking out the battery and power of the laptop and leaving for about 3 mins this will reset the USB; sounds like you mightof been removing the usb lead without eject from computer first

I was just going to suggest that you remove the USB subsystem from Devices in Computer Management, perform a hardware scan and let the drivers reinstall, but I see that it's sorted.

That's easier said than done lol Martin.... one would need to know what one was doing to find that and perform that task.

No idea why things went up the left as this has never happened before but John's suggestion worked.

No worries - I'll talk you through it if you ever need to do it.

It's more often required when wi-fi goes wrong and won't pick up any networks.

Its best not to remove the usb devices without going to remove safly hardware first as not good for the drivers from usb, basically you just reset the drivers

Good advice John, thank you, the thing is I didn't remove anything from the laptop so its a mystery why this went wrong.
