Using a degauss disc is an art on old colour sets. They were a bitch to get right. Newer ones had better self degaussing inbuilt and were easier to trim off

Supermarket security guys can be a pain.

Several times I've walked out of the entrance with other people leaving as I do, but if the alarm sounds, they always stop me. Which a mistake on their part, because I'm the most bloody mindedly awkward and difficult person to be dealing with.

I had one a week or two back when the alarm went. He jogged over and said "can you come back inside", to which I of course said 'NO'! He said "can I see your receipt?" Answer again, 'NO'! Then, "I need to look in your bags". I said, 'the contents of the bags are my property. I paid for them' and walked off. He didn't come after me.

I think he was running a scam. The person who really set the alarm going was a dodgy looking female with a trolley of shopping who left as I did. She'd been hanging about just inside until I left and she went out as I did. The alarm went and he had to stop somebody (me) to make it look good. I bet he knew the scruffy girl.

I think I'm right in saying unless they actually 'see' you stealing something they have absolutely no right in stopping you as you walk out of the shop

Dodgy looking scruffy girls are a pain... plenty in North End, Portsmouth.... I like to think I'm not one of them

Well they'll certainly find it 'entertaining' if they ever physically try to stop me. It's not happened yet, despite several confrontations.

I was in a very busy LIDL and behind a customer who changed their mind about the potted plant they'd selected and the till girl went to change it. I'd been queuing for about ten minutes as it was, so after waiting to be served for another couple of minutes, I lost patience and walked out, leaving a week's worth of shopping on the conveyor. I told the security guy 'you lot can sort that out'! Getting served in LIDL is always bad. Too few staff!

Not been in a Morrisons for about twenty years. I stopped using them back then as the quality of food was diabolical.

I hate being dazzled by bright brake lights waiting at traffic lights after dark. I was taught to use my handbrake when stopped for more than a few seconds at junctions. It's laughable to see people holding their position using their clutch on an incline. Must be a good earner for clutch fitters though.

A good many cars here have one or no brake lights or one headlight and rear light. You just don't see police stopping dodgy motors. They're probably occupied parking near burger joints and eating in the car. A sight you do see.

I have bought cars with worn clutches, but never worn one out myself. People seem to think they can use the clutch as a torque converter. Foolishness.

struth
01-10-2016, 11:46
A lot of folk use clutch pedal to rest foot on. That wears it out fast, and produces smoke .. ok it clutch has a lot of travel but not recommended. Only worn out a few clutches but all had long hard milage on them, as i used to do over 400 miles a day

Polis stop you here if a light is out... they are pernickety buggers

Same here for many years. Anyone in a suit was to be avoided. Then after the Knob Rot bikers bash late 80's , i bumped into a few guys i met there in suits, all their tats covered etc. This was the time when bikers were cutting their hair short, maybe a rats tail here and there. I have never assumed anything about a person by the way they dress since. I was sporting the Wild man. dragged through a hedge backwards catweazel look at the time, green oil jeans and a blue spiked goats beard.

Not a full on Biker, as i never owned a bike, just pillion for many years.
Most of my mates were. Some gang members , some just bike club, others just bikers. The days when bikes were bikes.
Kind of stopped when a few mates passed away ( i was there for 2 crashes). Then one summer on back of my mates bike 2 miles from home winding country road, came round a bend, there was a sheep and 2 yearlings crossing the road, mate started to break, but could see we were not going to stop in time, so opened up .avoided 2, cut the other in half ( almost) the bike all over the place, cheese wire fence to our left, stone wall to our right, idiots as we were that day with open faced lids on ,but all fine after many wobbles... Biked for the rest of the year but never felt the same after that.
Many years later would catch a lift on back of bike for a few months, was ok, around 67 miles each way trip, but was not as in tune with the guy riding as my old mate, didn't enjoy it at all.

Sounds like we have a similar background.... hung round with many 1% clubs but never fancied prospecting... still got a few mates in such clubs now.... was a London dispatch rider for a while... a new age traveller.... still have dreadlocks down to me arse and a big.... motorbike.... :D Unfortunately off the road until some day when I can afford to buy new tyres and chain+sprocket set...plus insurance etc... Only a few mates left with dreads these days. Gutted when one of my best mates cut his off ( charity thing), down to the bag of his knees ( bees wax ends), long dread beard, and only 4'9" tall. Looked like cousin IT from the Addams family.
Still have many traveller mates, from all over the UK.
Many tails to tell with those mates....
Back in the 90's myself and Scouse ( aka Wango Reily of the travelling stage fame) were working for Hawkwind, just finished the gig and leaving London for Scotland as we were working for T in the park .
Both in Scouses old Panama bus, drove about 15 miles then bus broke down. Scouse found out it was to do with the lift pump, and fashioned a new part for it out of an old spanner and some bolt crops. That lasted another 20 miles.
Ended up industrial twine on the manual lift pump with me one end pumping the fuel all the way to Scotland, the odd engine bleed now and again. I had Popeye arm. the worse was never got fixed and i had to do the same from Scotland down to Stratford upon Avon for the Phoenix fest.

I see Nik about the place too, well who doesn't the man never stops gigging. Just a shame they don't get on and all the other shit....
The London gig i mentioned was at Brixton with the Ozrics and a few other bands. Good gig.

Bet we could reminisce for hours! Here's a similar one I was involved in... Me mate Tarn had got hold of a Dodge box van for conversion to living vehicle and had trouble with it on way back from collecting it. He managed to get it parked up at a mate of his house. Next day on site he asks me for a lift up on my bike (hyper tuned RD250 I still had when travelling) with my tools and mechanical knowledge to help get said van back to site. Surprisingly it starts and seems to be running ok so off we set with me following behind on bike.... well we got about 3 miles when it conked out... after trying alsorts it decided to go again.. for 3 miles... we then started looking into the problem a bit deeper... by the light of candles () we deduced that petrol was not getting through in more than the odd spurt and deduced a knackered fuel pump. So... I had a long length of plastic tubing in me bag we end up with this connected from the vans carburettor to the fuel tank of my bike (running on 20:1 pre-mix) and me sat on the bike in the back of the van holding the brakes on whilst we laid a smoke screen back to the site:D Turned out to be a blocked fuel filter that would allow a bit through until it picked up some more muck and blocked again...

seen Hawkwind several times... can't remember any of them... had to inform NiK Turner and the Allstars that there place had been given to a local heavy metal band at one free festival as they had turned up 2 hours late. I was on the mixing desk and they were fine about it and rolled several phat ones:eyebrows:

Then there was the Ozrics and a carrier bag of billy....

Eee I could rant on all night about it... but I won't.... funny, I never did develop any interest in golf and canapés:D

I remember years back getting a coach to Swansea from London at xmas and early on the driver came on the PA saying he was from Glasgow and had been contracted in by National Express to cover the holidays, and consequently if anyone knew where the bus station was in Swansea if they could come and tell him that woudl be a great help, to much laughter on the bus.

When we were finally approaching Swansea, he came on again saying "aye well I wasnae kidding earlier so if any of yous do know where the bus station is if yous coudl come up noo and guide me in that would be great"

There's a tradition here of thanking the bus driver (or buzz driver as they say in these parts) when you get off. I adopted it too, but never encountered it anywhere else I've been or lived. Not absolutely everyone doing it, anyway.

It seems to be a recent phenomenon - but a "thank you" costs nothing and the bus driver replies in kind. I do it now.

Very common here. Everyone thanks the bus driver. Been that way since I was a lad and probably before. The older generation did it and we learned it from them.

Thankfully I've not been on any form of UK public transport for about 15 years, and from what I'm reading here, I won't be starting again anytime soon!

I avoid mixing with the 'great unwashed' as much as possible, simply because when travelling somewhere, I enjoy having my own personal space [and bus routes going in and out of depressing looking housing estates, taking a long-cut for a shortcut and adding unnecessary miles onto the journey, frustrates me beyond belief], as well as being in control of the times that I travel, which is why for me the car is king! ;)

Freedom to do what I want, when I want, is very important to me. However, I realise that for others, particularly those working in towns and city centres, there is little option but to use public transport. They have my sympathies.

Marco.

Interesting to know it happens elsewhere. It isn't recent here, they were already doing it when I arrived in '87. But I rarely saw it in Liverpool or Nottingham.

Don't catch the bus much anymore. It is so expensive now a taxi is not much more. Less if you share. It can be entertaining though, you see some funny carry-ons sometimes.

Not that I'm on busses much and not been for long time now as I doubt I could get on one now, but it was customary to say thanks to driver. and the occasional reprimand if he was a shit driver;)

I've actually taken to catching the bus more often as a cheap and convenient means of getting into town if I'm having a night out. It comes from the end of my street and drops me right in the town centre. Peak hours would be awful though but on a Friday or Saturday evening it's quite handy and reasonably cheap which of course means more beer and record money.

That's a bit black and white. The Biblical sanction is against 'bearing false witness' (perjury) rather than simply telling an untruth. I can think of a few occasions in my youth where a polite untruth would have been less hurtful than the unvarnished truth that I actually told, and I learnt that a white lie might be harmless and indeed helpful.

The liars you are talking about are basically Walter Mitty types, and as long as no-one is conned out of money by them, or otherwise hurt by them, I see no real problem. Usually their lies are so transparent that no-one believes them after a while.

The worst types of liars are those who lie maliciously to hurt people, and those who lie to con people out of their possessions, either directly or indirectly.

People that can't pack stuff properly for dispatch.

I received a used wheel trim for my Suzuki car this morning. It arrived in a carrier bag covered in a black bin liner, no cardboard or padding of any kind around it. Miraculously it got here undamaged, but that was sheer luck. I've bought wheel trims in the past and several have been broken in transit even when packed well.

Packing for carriage really is just common sense. Hefty items require some thought obviously. Ever tried packaging a heavy turntable with acrylic lid?

I received a MiniDisc deck in the post one day, rattling about in an oversized thin cardboard box and no padding around it. By pure providence, that too survived. But I have had several items damaged due to poor packaging, last one was a Lenco GL75 that was pretty comprehensively trashed.

It's not bloody rocket science! Get it right!!

I'd have known what a matchlock was, but the dambusters questions would have had me stumped. Even in my day, we were taught some periods of history exhaustively, and others not at all. I'm OK on the 18th/19th centuries, but ask me a question about the 100 Years War and, unless the answer is Agincourt, I'd be at a loss.

I don't watch Mastermind, but do sometimes look in on University Challenge. I'm fine on literature and classical music, but anything science-y and it's down to lucky guesses.

I work with some very bright younger people but they have no knowledge of history at all. Not even WW2. They are aware it was an event, but not sure when it happened, how it happened or what happened.

I accept that they can't teach everything but I think a compulsory year in secondary education spent studying the Second World War and its effect on today's world would be highly beneficial. Its importance as an event cannot be over-estimated. It would at least give them an idea of the context of where we are now. These children will become the future decision-makers, and those who forget (or don't even know about) the mistakes of the past are condemned to repeat them.

Got a feeling the old man flew with Gibson once or twice. I've got his WW2 flight log somehere. I'll have a look. It probably wouldn't have been bombing, it would have more likely have been radar research tests.

People who can't, or won't, use the correct spellings of:

Their, There, They're.

Their is the possessive form indicating belonging to them. You should only use this when you are indicating possession to a group. Look at the examples below.

The children all ate their sandwiches.

The soldiers polished their rifles.

The Greek people are justifiably proud of their beautiful country.

The passengers complained that the airline had lost their luggage.

There is the place, i.e. not here.

It is also used when saying 'there is' and 'there are'.

Put those books over there please.

I found the old shoes in there.

There are thousands of stars visible from Earth.

There is soot all over the new carpet.

They're is the contracted form of "they are". Remember that abbreviations like this should not be used in essays and other formal writing. They are fine in reported speech.

'They're all going to the cinema this evening,' said Paul's mum.

'I can't see where they're coming from!' he yelled.

'They're waiting for you in the interview room.'

'Do you know where they're going to be this afternoon?'

I get accused of snobbery when I pull people up on this, but it is really elementary English and if you can't be bothered to use the words properly then I can't really be expected to take what you say seriously.

Bags that have 'I'm recyclable' written on them. What is wrong with just 'Recyclable'? Part of a wider trend, regrettably.

An inanimate object cannot refer to itself, except maybe in a nursery story where teapots and things come to life. The vast majority of people are not child-like morons, why do marketing think they are? This sort of strategy surely pisses off far more people than it impresses. So why do it?

I hate all this corporate bullshit with a vengeance and I'm convinced it doesn't work. They had a big overhaul of the supermarket by me recently. Big billboards around the contractor's huts in the car park, a close-up of an attractive young woman and a banner along the lines of 'Making Your Store Even Better'.

A more truthful version would feature a picture of some scrote in their bathrobe and slippers buying 20 Rothmans and some scratch cards with the tagline 'Rearranging Our Store In A Desperate Attempt To Increase Profits And Reduce Shoplifting To Manageable Levels'

Bad grammar doesn't bother me too much, but if someone says they hate Shakespeare, I suspect them of not being entirely human.

As far as 'most' people being morons, I doubt that's true. Of course, there are some dumb people around, but most people are bright in some ways, dim in others. For instance, I'm quite sharp when it comes to things arty and literary, but the mechanical and science-y side of things slides past me. Confronted with anything more complicated than a fork, I'm like a medieval peasant suspecting that some sort of magic makes these things work. It's a safe bet that others' minds work in the opposite way; they can fix almost anything, but literature, art and any music more complex than Guns 'n Roses leaves them cold.

In this age of fake news and opinion masquerading as fact, good quality journalism is becoming a rare commodity. It is still possible to find some of it on these sites. It has become practically impossible on social media.

Moreover, there are still some people on their comments sections who welcome a well put argument without acting like spoiled children when their opinions are challenged. This is becoming rare elsewhere too.

You can't introduce competition to supplying water or power. I'm sure they only privatised water and power in the first place to give pension companies a safe bet.

It really gets me that essential services are in private hands. They should be run by the government and contracted out if need be. At least then some sort of control over charges could be maintained.

What constitutes 'essential services' is another bugbear of mine. A basic government provided option should be offered for things like, legal services, car and other insurances and house sales, for instance. If you want to go private do so, but there should be state run alternatives.

ReggieB
18-02-2017, 11:47
I wish governments would work out that these false markets don't work. I have nothing against competition - but it is only one of a number of solutions to a problem.

Artificially creating a market doesn't work. There is one water mains network, one telephone network, one electricity supply network, and one gas supply network. It does not make sense to trying to add competition to these markets because a supplier isn't going to offer an alternative product - its the same service delivered over the same medium.

If alternative products can be delivered independently by a number of suppliers - then a competitive market makes sense and should be encouraged (and regulated to avoid dominance by cartels or monopolies). Where this isn't the case, then don't create artificial markets and pretend that the result is a competitive market place.

You're absolutely right - except for the telephone network!!!

I was talking about landlines. The vast majority of these are provided by BT (or whichever incarnation of BT it is that is currently pretending it's not BT). BT sell access to the lines via wholesale packages. If you have a BT line, all the providers who offer you deals are just reselling one of these BT wholesale packages.

However, mobile is worth discussing. Does it really make sense to have multiple suppliers providing the same service. Why should it depend on which provider I use, as to whether I get a good signal in my home. Also competition tends to lead to less populated areas getting poor coverage.

Not so. The Cable TV companies (of which there were MANY back in the '90s, all now are regional parts of Virgin Media) have an entirely separate network to BT. I worked for BT for 12 years from 1980 to 1992, then moved to (what was LCL Cable in Leicester), where I installed and commissioned a brand new fibre optic transmission network while my colleagues commissioned a brand new telephone exchange (switch).
Up and down the country these networks are all joined together, and all join BT at numerous locations.
There is absolutely no shared infrastructure, no shared cabling etc from the exchange to the customer's house/business.

What I have to laugh at with those adverts is how it's a 50 and over plan - lumping us (still relatively young) folk in with all the coffin dodgers!!

In reality, with folk generally living much longer now, 50 is feck all. 50 is the new 40, 40 is the new 30, etc. In general, people are living around 10 years longer than they used to, and that fact should be reflected in these daft adverts.

Plus, in all honesty, I feel the same now (in some ways even better), as I did when I was 30, and don't look a heck of a lot different either, so I'm more concerned with enjoying life than planning my fooking funeral!!

"The 65 and over plan", these days, would be more apt!

This one irked me no end.

I put a for sale ad on gumtree for an amp, collection only. Some guy from London rings and says he really wants it and would I consider posting, he says he can't drive and is partially disabled. He was the type that won't take notice of when it's time to end the conversation, every call lasted 30 minutes (there were several calls over the course of 2 or 3 days) while he told me all about his past, semi-famous friends and musical history. I agreed to post it (my fault I know), he wanted an invoice as he has to account for his spending due to being on incapacity benefit, I find a template for Word and email the invoice as requested. I boxed the amp up ready to send as soon as payment comes through, while waiting for payment I get a text from him saying he has decided not to buy it as he now thinks he should buy from ebay where he has paypal buyer protection.

Now I do realise I brought this on myself by agreeing to post, but somehow getting messed about while trying to do something helpful for someone was incredibly annoying.

Tesco crusty bread! Why is it so horrible?

Hard, tasteless bagettes that are almost white, starchy inside and too dry outside. Bloomers that taste as though they were baked the previous day (and probably were). They simply have nothing acceptable.

I think an effort was made when they went from the overpriced franchised counter to an inhouse operation again, at which time the bread was actually quite nice..........for all of two weeks and then reverted to the usual horrible stuff.

Sainsbury and Waitrose offer decent enough bread, as do LIDL these days (theirs used to be dire). Yet Tesco just don't seem capable.

struth

Agree Tesco in house is not great.. their Scottish morning rolls are good though you might not get good ones in Engerland.

Sainsbury bread not up to much either. Although when we had a 'French Market' in town (the only thing that was French about it was that one of the traders had a Renault van) one enterprising bloke went into the Sainsburys, which was adjacent to the market, bought a few dozen of their baguettes (about 50p each) and then flogged them on his stall as genuine French bread for 2 quid a pop. So they can't be that bad.

People who do not talk precisely and clearly, most especially when they are 'media personalities'.

This has been bothering me increasingly for decades, and is now de rigour on R4 in which the 'intelligencia and literati' are discussing something, and we are to listen to be educated.

It occurred to me this evening that we, as audiophiles have all heard 'lifeless' systems, those in which dynamics clarity and detail are missing, and I think we all loathe and avoid that. It is because the whole communication has resultantly lost impact.

The parallel with much spoken word could not be clearer to me, the talkers lacking even correct pronunciation, often missing whole phonemes and using ridiculous intonations and inflexions; they are not trying to express themselves to maximise the message received by their audience.

I call it 'slalem speech' because it is parallel to he way in which some skiers do not go fully round the course, but cut off some of it by going over the posts.

The causes are I think; dumbing down of the population culturally, laziness, self ingratiation with their peers in an exclusive group which seems to be more important than any audience, and of course criticism of what they are saying is made much more difficult, which protects them and their position.

I like the idea -in principle - of a gold standard broadcaster, publically funded so they don't need to chase ratings. In practice 90% of their output is an embarrassment to all those involved. And I don't mean it all has to be high-brow programme hardly anyone is interested in. That has its place. I never listen to R3 or R4 but I'm glad they exist. There is just too much of the opposite extreme; BBC1 is like a children's channel now, both in content and the way it is presented. BBC2 is going the same way. In fact if you put some of the educational children's programmes from the 1970s up against their current offerings for adults they would look high brow in comparison.

I have seen them and agree. Today the adult material is akin to the children's material back then, and the children's material now, from what I have seen when at my brother's, is awful pap-combined-with-dubious-social-engineering. Thankfully the children seem to have lost interest by the time the opening credits finish

Modern(ised) Pubs - Had the misfortune to visit one a week or so ago. Outside painted in some drab, flat, military surplus paint of a horrible grey or swampy green/brown hue. Most disgusting! Almost blown back out by a wall of (pre-programmed) sound blasting out at number 11. People sitting at the same table shouting and gesticulating madly at each other over the noise. Sadly it was a ghastly-pub so had to share the table with someone's left over pie and chips congealed on the plate which no-one had bothered to clear up. Clear glass windows floor to ceiling so everyone passing has a good gawp at what you're doing and who you're with. Now contrast this with the pubs of yore - frosted Windows start 4 feet off the ground and only the top inch and a half is clear, maybe a juke box where you can make your own music selection at a reasonable volume, no food mess except perhaps on a weekend when the landlord puts on a few cheese and onion rolls as a special treat for the regulars. OK, you might get the odd dart in your pint but that's a small price to pay for visiting a place of such intrigue and mystery, where plans can be hatched, secret liaisons and rendezvous made, cocktails and other such nonsense are unknown and a relaxing time can be had in the company of friends.

Macca
30-04-2017, 16:34
Agree that have killed the whole game except for a few places that are more like restaurants than pubs and have food at restaurant prices.

I used to be fascinated by pubs as a child; as you say the frosted windows made it impossible to see in, plus there would be a small vestibule so you couldn't look in through the door when someone came out either. The smell of tobacco smoke and stale beer, old boys in 3 piece suits and flat caps going in and out.

Places of wonder and mystery.

Now they are like greenhouses, smell of disinfectant and have awful people's awful children running around shouting.

Underground drinking dens are where it is at now. They don't need the brewery, just bottles and cans from the cash n carry. No kids and no stupid smoking ban either :)

Yes. Slow drivers again. Yesterday, I was in a long single file contraflow section on the A30. The posted speed limit was a low 40mph, but some clown in a camper a few cars ahead of me felt it was OK to drift along at 25 to 30mph for mile after mile, regardless of the dozens of cars baulked by him and tailing back.

No sooner than I'd left the contraflow, I passed him and cruised at around 75mph. Next thing, his old heap came flying past me at around 90mph. So much for his observance of speed limits. What an arsehole!! :steam:

Yes you can tell them to sod off, already did it twice. Had an engineer round to fit one, my house is 1970s so there is a brick enclosure around the area where the gas metre is, with a hinged wooden top on it. I show him this and he says 'No access mate, you will have to take all that brickwork out before I can fit it.'

so I said fine, don't fit it, watch me stay awake at night fretting about it.

They then call me six months later saying they are coming to fit it. Told them they already tried that and there is no 'access'.

'You have to have one by 2020 you know?'

Yeah. Good luck with that.

Oh I forgot. The other option is to have one put outside instead but I have to pay a grand myself. What planet are these people from?

This shite about installing smart meters is a con payed for by a levy on everybodies power bills.

Some of these installed smart meters do not work with other suppliers so they feck up your chances of a switch.

tread carefully and google properly. The power companies are not installing these out of the kindness of their hearts for your benefit!!...... :wanker:

I'm with Npower so I suspect they are all the same.

Part of a wider scheme to push green power. The long term plan was to have no conventional power and rely on wind and a little solar, backed up with fields full of diesel generators. The smart meters will allow them to cut your power selectively when demand is too high.

Probably.

I know. They are looking to do you around every corner. Must think we are soft touches or something. My rule is: If someone tells you it is raining, always go straight to the window and check. ;)

'Eat well for less' on BBC1. Are the general public really so thick they need 4 series of this claptrap to tell them that takeaways and branded food are more expensive than freshly prepared food and supermarket own brands?

And do we really need that smug self satisfied know nothing ex-greengrocer *expletive* Greg Wallace to tell us?

Haha yeah just been watching that, do like me Heinz beans but I'm happy to try cheaper stuff , cheaper certainly isn't always better or even as good and of course there's always the farmer/ producer to think of, I mean 2 litres of milk for a quid? That's great for me but surely can't go on for the farmer?

I moved to Npower from Encon or Enrip or something similar. First bill was for six grand. After some negotiation turned out that actually they owed me £800 which I got refunded to my bank account in the end. Just ridiculous. Have not bothered to change since. Not worth the aggravation.
