They are different albums, but each has its own qualities - which one I favour tends to match the mood I am in. Late night burner is Ophelia, middle of the day music would be Tiger Lily.
Not sure if you have Spotify, but this I think is a very fine album. Superbly recorded by Charlie Peacock (The Civil Wars) with some of the most emotive lyrics I have heard for awhile, especially the song Gone Away From Me.
Its currently my top album of the year and most definitely a 10/10 for me. I have played this more than any other record this year - Holly is Hank Williams granddaughter. I may not be everyone's cup of tea as its quite raw and bare in places, but the song-writing and musical composition is some if the finest I have heard for sometime.

I've only heard one track off this CD, on R3 this week, during a terrific downpour on the M4 somewhere near Newport. The overture to the 1812, rearranged with a choir. How it goes! I actually wooped...

As a general rule, I have often found that analogue recordings (from the 1960's and 70's) transfer better to the CD medium than some later digital masters.
Indeed, I have a CD of Puccini's La Boheme from a 1970's analogue master that is quite startling in its realism, whilst many choral recordings from that era are very atmospheric.
Much of the older analogue recording equipment was superb, but recording engineers of the day didn't have the ability to stick microphones everywhere, and dynamic range was comparatively limited, so they had to know what they were doing. I often feel that current day recording engineers rely far too heavily on their equipment, and their ability to edit sub-standard recordings, resulting in sub-standard CD's.

Agree entirely. Some of the 60s and 70s Deccas in particular are outstanding recorded by engineers who, as you say, really knew what they were doing with microphone placement, levels and so on. I have (amongst lots of other classical recordings) two wonderful 50+ CD box sets of Decca recordings from these periods and the way in which the orchestra is captured on some of them is better than a huge proportion of modern classical recordings.

David Johansen did two brilliant albums of authentic blues on the Chesky label.
Robert Lucas did a few on an audiophile label set up by Audioquest which contain some excellent National steel guitar playing.
Get yourself of to the website of Red Lick records, a blues specialist and download their pdf catalogue. It has some great recommendations. The great thing about blues is that everyone covers the classics, so if you like a cover version, you can go find the original and also see who else covered it. You'll find spotify and youtube really useful for that.

'Good New from the Next World' by Simple Minds 1995. Great album with not a dud track on it!
Blues jam in Chicago is a fantastic album . not tried the CD but have the reissue vinyl.

These Cds are so well presented that they will even sound great on cheap and nasty HiFi. I lean often to live performances because they are more organic, exciting and less predictable then studio repetitive efforts.

Bit late on this one but better late than never!
Try Buddy Guy 'Blues Singer' This is one superb Blues Album with brilliant songs on it and a great recording - No tinny sounds here.
Another to try is 'David Johansen and the Harry Smiths' and also his follow up ' David J & the Harry Smiths, Shaker'
These recordings are on the Chesky Label which give very good recording quality. They are all cover versions of old singers like Lighting Hopkins, Sonny Boy Williamson, Oscar Brown Junior and old Blues Men of that ilk. Some of the songs are none too cheerful!
You are warned!
Most of the really old blues recording will sound that way as they were recorded so long ago(78) ........most Chicago styled 60/70's blues from the greats of the genre are pretty reasonable up to very good. The 3 kings of blues stuff is superb, although better on vinyl. IE: BB King, Freddie King and the master himself Albert King. Also any of the great Stevie Ray Vaughan stuff is superb. Acoustic, then J L Hooker and Buddy guy did a good one; going back to acoustic.

A true 10 out of 10 album, whether it be played on CD, LP, Cassette, £50k Naim system or £5 transistor radio.

I have toooooo many albums that I would give 10/10 (and I am quite critical) but, as I've said before music is very subjective and one persons' 10/10 album is someone elses 0/10. Here are 5 that spring to mind (In no particular order of preference) :-

Japan - Assemblage - A fantastic mix of songs from there early career and there isn't a bad track on it; I'm not usually a fan of compilations but this one highlights Japan beautifully. Japan have to be one of the most underrated bands ever. As musicians, Japan were class, the bass playing was an art form in itself, Steve Jansens drumming was great, the synth sound was the inspiration for what came after because Japan were simply way ahead of there time!!!

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here - Along with Dark Side Of The Moon, these are simply career defining albums; there's nothing else to say that hasn't already been said - absolute CLASS !!!
I could go on and on but, these are just a fraction of the albums I would give 10/10 :) There are so many more from the years where music meant something unlike todays conveyor belt pop crap :steam:

I am amused that many of the albums posted up here were released quite a while before CD became a reality.
The albums I listed way back when in the thread were once only available of CD, yet I see Robin Trower's "Bridge Of Sighs", and that was out before Pink Floyd released "Wish You Were Here" - definitely pre CD.
I have long thought the thread should just simply be called "albums that I like", because the CD bit seems to have be irrelevant from the off.

On my first post on this thread I mentioned an album by Shawn Mullins - that has since been released on vinyl, but at the time of posting it was still CD only.
Another one someone else posted was "Acoustic Live", by Nils Lofgren, which has since been released on vinyl too.
So things have changed after the posts were made, which was against the odds.
I have the Shawn Mullins record, and I'm happy, as I always said that I'd buy a copy if it ever came out on vinyl.
As I progressed through the thread I saw album after album that was released prior to CD hitting the market, so I've tended to view much of the posting as well meaning, but wide of the mark, because nobody paid attention to the "CD" bit of the title.
And it seems to be the modus operandi for most posts in this thread.
C'mon chaps.
Surely you can do better than this?

Discovered this thread earlier in the week and enjoyed several hours going through all 58 pages! Many recommendations are familiar, a few will be in my 'Basket' shortly..........
My first three 'good/great sounding CDs' that are also musically special (to me anyway).........
- Stina Nordenstam - 'And She Closed Her Eyes'. 1994 release from reclusive Swedish female artist. Fascinating album and wonderfully recorded.
- Craig Armstrong - 'As if to Nothing'. Scottish 'Composer' who released this 2002 Album as a follow up to the equally good 'The Space Between Us'. An eclectic mixture of Electronica and Orchestration (with occasional Vocals). Amazing dynamics to the recording - sounds fantastic!
- Prefab Sprout - 'Steve McQueen'. Great recording by Thomas Dolby - the 2007 Double CD 'Legacy Edition' is really impressive.

I have also just discovered this thread but have not looked through all 58 pages yet so if someone else has suggested this then I'll just add it as a +1.
I put on Roger Waters' Pro's and Con's of Hitchhiking this last weekend whilst listening to fairly new Speakers and new Interconnects.
My copy is from 1984 and am not sure if it's been re-released/re-mastered and (possibly) ruined but this version I would put up there as 10/10. The recording is superb and the playing (Clapton on guitar) is wonderfull.
I think this was his first solo release so some of the guitar riffs you think ''...that's familiar...'' but a great album to get lost in with the lights out on a Sunday evening !

Really good sounding CDs are (generalising) taken from uncompressed recordings, however the good CDs are still very different from good vinyl.
Cds I normally avoid is the remastered versions. They can sound great but if over compressed they sound dreadfully thin and mechanical.
Any of the Camaron de la Isla / Paco de Lucia albums. Truly spellbinding flamenco. Start with ‘El Camaron De La Isla’.

In recent times I have often heard a great song and thought I must by the CD to find the rest of it is pretty poor.
So a few months ago dug out some old CDs and listened to Cat Stevens Tea for the Tillerman every track is great. Next evening Teaser and the Firecat every track is great. Next Buddha and the Chocolate Box - Yip every track is great. Such a Talented Guy.

He had some very decent albums in the mid 70’s
Not rite oft i give 10 for an album but fish's final album is pretty stunning. Best sound ive heard from him for a long time even if vocals could do with a tiny lift in mix. Its called Welschmerz you can find it on usual places tidal has it in 24bit MQA although it currently tagged as a single. What a sign off from the big man.
I was listening to an interview with Whispering Bob Harris last night on Radio 2, who is just Mr. Mellow and loves his old Country music.
