Over the past couple of years I've been shocked at the sound quality of some CDs but equally there have been others that have blown my socks of.
With the right system and right CD it can sound every bit as good as vinyl IMHO. Sadly, it doesn't matter how good your system is, if it's a shit CD then you've got no chance.
So, I thought I'd like to start building a list of CD albums with great sound quality AS WELL AS great musical content.
I realise that the musical content bit is entirely subjective but I'm happy to live with that.
I often by CDs on a whim. I'd be happier doing that if I knew the quality was going to be good.
So how about we're allowed THREE PICKS EACH to start off.
Here's my three to kick off
NILS LOFGREN: Acoustic Live
JOSS STONE: Soul Sessions
GILLIAN WELCH: Harrow and the Harvest.
Over to you . . .
My three would be
Pomp & Pipes - Dallas Wind Symphony/Frederick Fennell/Paul Reido(Organ)/ Reference recordings RR-58CD
Exotic Dances from the Opera - Minnesota Orchestra/ Eiji Owe - Reference Recordings RR-71CD
John Rutter - Requiem - Timothy Brown/Choir of Clare College Cambridge, Naxos 8.557130
The first two of these are demonstration quality recordings with super music. The third is a stunning recording that simply transports the listener to another place
David :):)
I presume that you've got Beyond Skin by Nitin Sawhney? :)
If not, *THAT* is a must!
Marco.
Dropped through the door yesterday!! :eyebrows:
Very Very well produced....awesome bass!!
Nice one, Ian - glad you like it. It's a classic... Long time no hear, btw! Wherevyabeen? :)
Marco.
I look in from time to time to see how things are ;-) still keeping busy dismantling stuff and making it "better" or at least different!!
About time a list was put together with good content that's well produced, especially now there are outlets on eBay selling all those music magpie purchased for 10p CD's. Try the seller "estocks" that's where I'm getting lots from.
My music collection is growing at the rate of about 20-30 discs a month and Spotify is awesome for checking out before you buy.
Keep the suggestions coming, not fussed about genres but definitely interested the recording, well more production quality as I suspect most things are well recorded in the 1st instance.
I'd like to add
Chris Isaak : Wicked Game
John Martyn : No Little Boy
&
Any of Newton Falkners albums especially the delux versions with the unmolested live stuff on them!!

I can recommend Blues Deluxe by Joe Bonamassa - an incredible recording. It's a shame his more recent albums aren't the same.
I know, the recording quality on the recent ones is utterly diabolical - talk about compressed to hell!! :steam:
WTF they've done with the recent stuff, I've no idea.... Shame, as JB is a wonderful guitarist.

Yep, not sure if it is recent producer Kevin Shirley or whoever does the mastering. Big shame.......
Not sure if anyone else on here likes Newton Faulkner but as I mentioned previously, the live stuff sounds unmolested in production! (his studio albums are pretty good too)
I have the one from the O2 ABC Glasgow 03/10/12 and its very good. The only shame is I got it before the 3rd disc was available (was on sale at the Oxford gig 15/10/12) so I had to download the content to burn to disc. Shame that you needed to download in MP3:doh: I specifically asked to ensure it was in a decent format when I brought it! To be fair each track is a massive file so its probably quite high bitrate (not listened to disc 3 yet!!)
You can get them here.......
http://www.concertlive.co.uk/product.php?id=153
Anyway I can vouch for the 1st 2 discs for the Glasow gig but there are 2 additional tracks on disc 3 for the London gig so it might be worth trying that one..........
I'm a big fan of Newton Faulkner, he's a very talented musician ;)
joe cocker , organic , superb re recordings , quality is top notch , by a country mile ,there are others of course but this one simply stands way out in front , the stones stripped is another
Thats for sure..........
I'd never before seen anyone tuning the guitar whilst playing mid song as the tuning was different in the verse as opposed to the chorus.
And he's a local to where I grew up and worked for 15 years up until 2 years ago!

Hi Harry -I'm sure I recommended this one before but it is not on your list so possibly I didn't or you missed it:
Isaac Hayes - 'Hot Buttered Soul' . In fact all of Hayes' albums are superb productions, but this is arguably the best musically. Don't let the title fool you, it is more funk than soul. One of the best things ever done by anybody, ever.

STEELY DAN: Gaucho.
The 2000 remaster. Quite possibly the most sublime recording I've ever heard quite frankly I'm stunned at how good this is.
They were in the studio 5 days a week for 2 years and spent (allegedly) 2 million dollars on the recording. That's 2 million in vastly uninflated 1979 dollars. Not surprising they needed a twenty year break before doing the next one.
Gaucho is an exercise in absolute perfection, Harry. And despite, or perhaps in spite of, their relationship falling apart at the seams, the songs and performances are simply superb. One of the shining pinnacles of modern recording. The original vinyl is superb, even better than the SACD.
isuckedmandelsonslemons

And another interesting Gaucho titbit. When they'd finished their mammoth stint in the studio they had a little bit of wasted two inch tape of outtakes. Well, more than a little; 320 spools.

I share your enthusiasm and love of the album. But not everyone does. The Rolling Stone album guide gives it 1/5 which is frankly ridiculous. Some halfwit reviewer being arsey in pursuit if making a name for himself.

Well, it was about forty years ago. I was about seventeen and loon pants (big wide flares) had become very fashionable. The boutique that he worked in happened to be the cheapest in the area. I knew him vaguely through a mate who worked in another boutique. So there you go. He sold me a pair of loon pants. He went to same art college as me but he'd left before I started.
The great Paul Rodgers bought me a pint one night as well but you don't want to know that. We'll be here all night.

You are going to love it.
I could swear Tony Banks is playing in parts.
Loads of real mellotron and bass pedals - your amp will be working overtime on track two - just for the background tone settings :-)

And I need to get more Porcupine Tree.
Try an album called 'Measure' by Field Music.
It reminds me of a 1970's rock concept album with a contemporary art-house twist, many of the tracks are gapless. influences come thick and fast, plenty of beatles (abbey road), sounds like one of those 70's albums that were recorded in a 'well padded' studio.

Not everyone's cup of tea but IMHO great music and awesome sound ...

A couple more from me ... in a totally different vein from Nirvana as that wasn't endorsed (IMHO it sorts out systems) ... anyway my taste is definitely diverse so here are some alternatives in different genres - nothing too mainstream ..
Jon Strong - Follow Me
also
Chris Rea - Auberge
And for those who like to mix music with a sense of humour
Loudon Wainwright III - A Live One
And a couple or those who love female vocalists
Julia Fordham - Porcelain
Bliss - Loveprayer
One for those needing to give the system a full range workout
Styles - Ben Liebrand
For those in the electronica camp
One Vision - Jakatta
For a bit of jazz
James Moody - Sweet and Lovely
And for a bit of Acid House Country music
Alabama 3 - Exile on Coldharbour Lane
Any views on any of these ?
Enjoy

Congratulations to whoever it was who recommended In The Red by Tina Dico. Superb.
Might have been me. I definitely recommended Count to Ten.
Chris de Burgh is not everyone's cup of tea, God knows I detest a lot of his material, however Moonfleet & Other Stories is the exception. It is a concept album based around the activities of Dorset smugglers during the middle ages. There is way more to the story but I ain't gonna tell ye no more me hearties, you will need to pin yer lug'oles back and hear for yerself...
http://folking.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/chris-de-burgh-moonfleet.jpg
Anyway, it is an incredibly well produced and recorded album which, when heard on a good system, will give you a real sense of being in front of the performers :)

Not for everyone though. Some people like the pops and crackles on records and only listen to ancient prog. ;-)

Gutted.
I was lucky enough to see them live (just checked my ticket collection - 22nd March 2007 at symphony hall in brum) and they were fantastic.... The tickets were free too!
I had no idea he was dead, and a quick look on wikipedia suggests that the circumstances of his death are awful....
"On June 14, 2008, Svensson went missing during a scuba diving session on Ingarö outside Stockholm, Sweden. His diving companions, including an instructor and his then-14-year old son, eventually found him lying unconscious on the seabed.[1][2] Having sustained serious injuries, he was rushed to Karolinska University Hospital by helicopter, but could not be saved. He was 44 years old, married and the father of two sons."
I shall have to give one of his records a spin and raise a glass soon.

Not sure if this was already recommended: Peter Gabriel 4. One hell of a system test and truly separates the men from the boys. Thanks Martin, it's downloading now 24/96, if I like it I'll buy it. There doesn't seem to be much to my liking available on DVD-A, I think SACD has taken over the running. If I get serious in the future I may consider a DAC for the Pioneer as I doubt it's the best sounding disc spinner, certainly not as good as my CDP but could possibly serve as a transport for DVD-A and SACD:scratch:

I dont think your going to find much in the way of compression - the cd has a Dynamic Range score of 10 and the MultiChannel mix is a mere 13...
You may also find this interesting, and considering who was sat at the desk doing the job I do not think he is telling porkies..
Receiving a lot of questions about the mastering of The Raven That Refused to Sing - so for the audiophiles out there, rest assured that the mixes included on all formats are flat transfers of the mixes, with no additional EQ, compression or limiting. So consequently you *will* need to turn up the volume a bit when you listen compared to most other albums, all of the natural dynamics are preserved. (-:

Trying to compare with anything else out there is rather pointless as he was trying to forge something new.
Three tracks on the album are exceedingly challenging and ambitious, I happen to find them stunning works, but can see why some may struggle with them.

Can I ask what makes you assume that a dynamic range score (whatever that is) of 10 is exceptional.
As for having to turn up the volume, I didn't have to turn up the volume. In fact I had to turn it down.
I'm not saying that its a bad recording. It's far from it. It's actually pretty good. But no way would it go down as exceptional I'm my book. I could name a dozen better CD recordings. Hell's teeth I could come up with 100. I think the hype has worked with this album.
isuckedmandelsonslemons
05-03-2013, 17:36
Ah, I see now . . .
The DR score is from the dynamic range database. Average score for the album is 10.
So I plucked an album off the top of my head: Gaucho by Steely Dan. Average score for the album is 15. Worth noting that Gaucho was recorded over 30 years ago.
Like I said the Steven Wilson album is good SQ. Certainly not exceptional, groundbreaking, cutting edge and all the other hyperboles I've heard.
Judging by Gaucho's high standard, there are classical recordings that would easily score in excess of 20 on that same scale for dynamic range.
isuckedmandelsonslemons
05-03-2013, 18:34
Yes, I would think so Martin. And there certainly won't be many rock/pop recordings that score more than 15. Brothers in Arms maybe. Something by Fleetwood Mac maybe. Tracy Chapman?

I'm giving religious revivalist ditties a bit of a rest at the moment. But thanks all the same.

If dreamy female pop is your bag (and isn't it everyones'?) Minipop did an album A New Hope a few years ago. I'll post a YouTube kink in the What About This Track? thread.

Yes, I would think so Martin. And there certainly won't be many rock/pop recordings that score more than 15. Brothers in Arms maybe. Something by Fleetwood Mac maybe. Tracy Chapman?
Try 'The Wall' and 'Tea For The Tiller Man'. Don't know what they are but sound far more dynamic than those mentioned on the original vinyl cuts. Which of course have 'limited' dynamics according to the objectivists.

Tea for the Tillerman on reissue vinyl has absolutely knockout dynamics.

Got both. Both superb.
Another 40 CDs bought today.

Not my cup of tea but an ex used to have it on original vinyl and that was knockout as well.

ANYTHING! by Gordon Lightfoot. The production and sound quality of his recordings is excellent. Try his "Complete Greatest Hits".

Don't dismiss the "Complete Greatest Hits". I did until I read the review here last night and now intend to get it - £9 on eBay.
I don't actually have any of his albums as such, just the 4 cd boxset which spans his work. The thing that surprises me is how consistantly good his material is. I only knew of him from some of his hits and had forgot about him, and then i saw the boxset in an HMV sale a few years ago. Might start and collect his albums.

Oh yes, all those are good - Fever Ray especially.
If we're talking Swedish, then how about The Cardigans? 2003's Long Gone Before Daylight whilst nowhere near as poppy as their earlier stuff is a great recording IMHO.

Yes Alex the Cardigans are great. Gran Turismo is an amazing production. For some reason i've been listening to a lot of swedish stuff lately, lots of real quality comes from there. Must be the long dark nights with nothing to do but make music!

It's an epic album and I may well have already recommended it further up the thread. If I didn't, then +1.
Well this has been an interesting and slightly expensive thread for me!
Some great CDs picked up from the many listed and I like most, so thanks to many of you.
I have racked my brains (and sifted my collection) to contribute something. I really like last year's Mercury album winner - An Awesome Wave by Alt-J which sounds well recorded to my ears. It scores quite badly on the DR database, but that aside, if it's managed to escape your attention so far I think some of you might rather like it.
I think An Awesome Wave is not the type of music to have a very large dynamic range but it does sound vivid and well recorded to me, as well as being an outstanding and quite different album of recent times.

Little late to reply but hey, am happy to help :)
So onto my next few!
The Script - The Script (They're debut album and an excellent fusion between Rock, Pop and Rap).
The Original Rude Boys - This Life (Support band for the 2012 The Script tour... Brilliant fusion between Irish Folk, Pop, Indie, Rap and Acoustic Rock).
Gloria Estefan - Cuts Both Ways (Still love this album - although probably better on Vinyl).
Tracy Chapman - Tracy Chapman (Excellent - If you haven't got it go out and buy immediately :)).
Def Leppard - Hysteria (My favourite band... no sarcasm please :))
I've gotten good music from this thread :)
Don't know if there mentioned before.....
Melanie De Biasio - No Deal
Julien Pras - Shady Hollow Circus
Erykah Badu - Live
I would highly recommend both of these albums if you're a Blues fan!

It is a good album, and it has never come out on vinyl, which is a shame.
I occasionally bring it up with Paul at Diverse Vinyl in an attempt to try and get Diverse Records to do a release of it, although nothing has come of it yet :(

Cassandra Wilson - Traveling Miles
Squirrel Nut Zippers - Bedlam Ballroom
...off the top of my head
Biff,
I ordered Cassandra Wilson based on this recommendation. It arrived yesterday and I have to say it really is an excellent album - so thank you for the recommendation.
Paul.
