As André said, they're RDC cones - although they should be the other way up, put it all together without thinking.
It's unlikely the PL71's staying though - I'm so hooked on my digital side these days that I'm really not 'into' vinyl. The microswitch under the 33rpm button needs replacing too and I really can't be bothered with the hassle at the moment. The deck is in nice cosmetic condition though, and has a brand new lid which was custom-made for it. Looks fabulous.

Yup, the PL71's a great deck, just that this one needs a bit of TLC to get it singing right again. The armtube's azimuth isn't perfectly true; the headshell socket's been twisted to compensate and as a result it's pointing upwards. The microswitch under the 33rpm button also needs replacing.
Cosmetically though it's in really clean condition and with its brand new custom-made lid it looks fabulous. Mechanical bits are easy to fix though fortunately (and with guys like Johnnie at AO around there's always help at hand) - cosmetics usually aren't so straightforward.

Seriously, I can fully understand you thinking that - and what you say does of course make common sense. I do get these peaks and troughs though with kit, and at the moment the digits are peaking quite nicely, but the analogue is a wee bit fractious. I've given the PL71 a good going over this last couple of days and it's now starting to sound a bit more respectable so the old girl has had something of a reprieve.
When all's said, although I do get frustrated at times, it's actually quite good fun...or I'm a masochist. :D

In all seriousness, I'm just 'fiddling' at the moment and come May time I'm planning on doing a ground-up system build. No idea at all what it'll be, but will be doing it slowly this time. Pretty much all of what I have at the moment (except the TT) will go into a second rig in our family room.
Sounds like fun, Richard. I look forward to seeing it all unfolding in due course! :)

Amazon are rare in the UK - the only ones I've ever seen were at Walrus Systems in London, but Les (the guy who co-runs the shop) rates them very highly indeed. Look stunning too.

It is a 12" Robert Fuchs Tone arm made of Ebony and German steel. It is some kind of special : a unipivot based on a magnetic bearing.
Lol... Thanks for the clarification, Didier. I prefer the back of the arm, to the rest of it. Aesthetically, I'm not a big fan of 12" arms, as they tend to look rather 'awkward' and cumbersome, unless the designer has put a great deal of thought into styling.
No doubt it'd sound fab, though! Ebony is a great material for an arm tube :)

I bought one of the very last '3009, S2 Imp' before they packed up with it. Ive had more different arms than hot dinners. The '3009' has always stayed. Only one other arm i loves as much was my old Mayware 'Formula 4'. But the '3009' design & finish is top notch..
A lot of people prefer the old 'S2' to the 'S2, Improved' i think the Improved looks better, & to me & has a better finish imho..

Yup, in a walnut surround. The slate sits on sorbothane hemispheres. I'm very pleased.

At the beginning I actually tried to match the LAD arm with a Denon 103R though I managed to balance it eventually, the 103R with the aluminum body was a bit on the heavy side as I had to move the counterweight far backward.

Apart from replacing the needle I never really took much care of it until I gave it a scrub a few weeks back ... and replaced the bit of string (no, really....)

I had to stick some blue tack on the counterweight and move it to the far end, so finally I got the cartridge balanced.

Nothing much has changed, just the Shure M91ED with Jico SAS stylus. Well worth the money in my opinion.
And how was the sound
My brief impression was very good but I didn’t like the appearance of the extra blue tack sticking on the counterweight so I removed the 103R and installed it back on my Technics SP15 / Micro Seiki 505S.

Where have the grooves in the records gone? How do these new ones operate the music box bits in the arm or have they redesigned it to work on some fancy modern principle? I bet the old one sounds better...

I have been reading up on this model and apparently it's pure plug and play the company says it's so hi tech that there is no need for tweaking they have spent 40 years developing this model and in conjunction with EMI are big going to release more albums, these albums are so unique, practically indestructible and multiple colours for indexing, will have to wait and see how good it is, already been released at high high end audio outlets
And as a billy bonus the records can be used as a frisbee at the beach.
Top market research that...

So some say. I can't think why though. Black vinyl is less pure as it contains more pigment, so you'd expect it to be inferior. Can't say I've heard any difference myself.
black records are coloured or blackened too, the vinyl being clear itself so if coloured LPs sound inferior it's not because of the colour but the vinyl quality itself. ..or the pressing which is probably more likely. Picture vinyl is probably inferior though

Yes, platter and sub-platter are TT2 bits,and the motor and electronics are from a Vestax PDX2000 (thanks, Adam!). Haven't decided yet exactly how it will proceed, but I think it will involve 10mm thick layers of slate glued together with PVA.
That Vestax motor is really nicely made and very self-contained. An absolute doddle for a DIY project.
Sadly, I've got a lot on at the moment so it's only progressing in occasional half-hour bursts but its giving me lots to think about!

Cheers Gazjam. Aye, I was going to buy an Ortofon Cadenza bronze but i opted for the Dynavector on the recommendation of my local dealer. I'm glad i did really as i have since had the opportunity to hear the Ortofon and it didn't float me boat. Good as it was the Dynavector just seemed more natural especially via the Firebottle 2.

Great decks Mike if you get a good un. Hard to beat actually although the arms are pretty much unfixable if anything goes wrong. Sony had a small dedicated team who set these things up apparently and it took ages to get them spot on. Nearly bought one a couple of years agi but chickened out....
