I wonder if they made a conventional arm with the same design?

Yes, but the G99 was fitted with a much inferior arm and cartridge (Rega RB300/AT-33PTG)! Plus the Garrard also had a superior NW Analogue slate plinth (the slate plinth on the G99 was of a DIY construction) ;)
Yet, to my ears, the G99 still sounded significantly better (although the Garrard was no slouch).

Interesting you should ask that. I've never had it confirmed 100% but have a look at the arm on the Yamaha GT-750 here:

It's a nice deck, actually. I've only heard it with the Ortofon VMS20 that it came fitted with (which I like anyway) and it's smooth, detailed and nicely musical. Sadly it's not quite as chunky as its looks would suggest - the silver top part around the motor that looks like the SP10 is plastic, the platter is only around 2.5kg and when I first picked it up it was a hell of a lot lighter than I was expecting. Consequently, although it looks like a big lump, it's really not, whereas my lovely, red 'plastic-looking' Vestax is built like a tank!
'Hideous' doesn't even begin to describe it, but I know why Adam likes his Vesty :)

He likes it because of the superb motor and build quality, and sound! In fact the DIY D/D I have on the drawing board that I alluded to earlier will be entirely based around Vestax electronics and motor...:eyebrows:

I have Colin's basic ones with a graphite type finish on them, currently with Colin having silver internal wiring and Furutech binding posts fitted.

Thanks for all of the kind words about my decks. I love em and what they spin. I've ballsed up the wiring on the g99's arm so it won't be playing anything until I sort it.
They all have something different so I just sit back and enjoy them. Making comparisons just spoils the music.
Will host another music afternoon shortly in helsby for anyone who fancies a listen.

The Linn I kept for 2 weeks, not my cup of tea at all, very coloured upper bass, The Rega's are silver, my son's and purple, my mother in laws. The Orbe I just sold but I've kept the SMEIV. As i paid for the Regas I count them as mine:)
The Roksan was my late brothers I got it for him and set it up, next time i'm over in Tennessee, (where he lived) I'll ship it back

I photographed the lot in the studio at the Daily Express for S2 Magazine a while back but the feature was never run as the Sunday Express folded the magazine.

Thanks for the comment on the pics, Mamiya RZ67 fitted with a medium format Phase One digi back :):):) Mind you these days I get the same quality from a D3x and I can afford that::lol:
I had the original Ariston RD11 with the point bearing plus a Thorens and they both sounded better that the Linn to me. The JVC QL10 with an MC1 blew them all out of the water.

That is one of the first pictures I have seen worthy of framing and putting in my demo room, seriously!
Clutter that you had in the original pick was fine with me, a lamp base and a few wires were cool, this new one however is close to the top for me! :)

Very nice indeed, Danijel. Is that the original headshell for the Sony tonearm, and what's that weight you've got stuck (or placed) on top? I know it's to add mass, for the 103, but I'm just curious as to what it is, whether it's something you've bought or have made yourself? :)

Yes, that is the original Sony SH-150H headshell that came with the Sony tonearm.
The picture is a somewhat old now, as I have the new Nagaoka (heavier) headshell installed on my T/T. I'm waiting for the Alu-body for my DL-103R, and I'll take new pics when I set up everything.
The weight on the top of the headshell is some really fat washer (from the drum rack clamp!) I had laying around ;). It weighs 4,75 gr. together with the Blu-tack.

WB Act 1 turntable, Act 2 arm, Zu 103 grade 2. SME V and TMS 1, with Kiseki Blue (ESCO'd). I've been using a Garrott Decca in the WB and an Ortofon MC3000 in the Roksan and now they're back from ESCO and John Wright will probably switch them back in.

My Technics SL-1210 MkII Work in Progress. DIY stainless steel top plate, Sumiko headshell. Reso-mat.
Still haven't installed all the upgrades. Still waiting for the KAB fluid damper. Since early January... And I'll do something about the plinth - maybe stainless steel skirt all around the turntable to make it totaly "metal"? :fingers:

About the fluid damper - it got lost somewhere in New York, so David from KAB eventually sent a new one. First time that happened to me, and it was a registered package. Well, that didn't mean insurance against loss, so Dave sent a new one 'out of his pocket'...

Correct in that its a Shiraz (on a Breuer), but the TT is a TW Falcon, predecessor of the AC. Very nice sounding, reliable set up and one I can't see me changing in the near future. Benz mono LP on 12" Moerch DP6 Black Shadow at the back.

Nice deck, the SL1700 looks to be in really condition. I love the look of those TT's.
My first TT was SL1800MKII in 1981! It was a stunning looking TT, which I later traded up for a Rega P3, but I really missed the look and build quality of the Technics.

Thanks. This deck is totally mint, inside and out. My father purchased it new back in '79 and used it all the way up to about '96. After that, it was pretty much mine!
I purchased a brand new Music Hall mmf 5 to replace the SL-1700MK2 several years back, but ended up selling the mmf 5 because it didn't perform nowhere near as good as the old Technics. In fact, that seems to be true with all of the other decks I've purchased over the years, thinking they were upgrades to the 1700MK2.

It also sounds fantastic. I had the pleasure of listening to it the other day, and quite simply, it's one of the best turntables I've heard - stunningly good...! :eek:
Geoff was going to swap the AT-33PTG, currently fitted on it, for his Denon DL-S1, as I suspect that it would work even better on his Origin Live than on his TD-125/Audiomods, which should raise the performance of his G99 even further....

I don't disbelieve it. One of the G99's I have is my original bought in 1967, still with it's SME 3009 and Shure V15 on HW plinth..:wheniwasaboy:

The Benz I know, I run the Stereo benz LP. I've always hankered after a Shiraz as it struck me as having a more upbeat presentation to balance against the calm of the Benz LP.

Tapatalk is an excellent mobile app available for most platforms. However, if you read your e-mail alerts on your phone and then click on a link (as I often do), it goes to the browser version of AoS and that's where bandwidth consumption matters.

Avatar is part of my new image, MCRU denotes a lot more than cables, which is self explanatory, my product range is enormous compared to 12 months ago and although I am "famous" in certain circles for mains leads I get asked for a lot of other bits and pieces as well so the abbreviation to MCRU hopefully will not pigeon hole me into "just" cables any more!

Oops, I couldn't resist a Systemdek III with Helius Aurum arm. I hadn't intended to return to vinyl! There is a chest full of records though, so it'll be exciting.
Helius seem to have very little exposure online, but I do know that Audio Note took a fancy to their Scorpio arms (don't see their new arms on the site anymore though?) & the Aurum is more of a 'statement' arm than the Scorpio series... would like to hear any experiences? EDIT: also noticed that Audio Note licensed a Systemdek design & looks like this deck & arm were matched together in the 80s... cool.

Mmmm! Not a 'BLING' person myself either, in fact you will only see one part of the very edge. However, I also firmly believe that if you are going to do anything, do it properly and give all of the parts/components equal attention. That means finishing the parts that will never be seen to the same standard that those parts that will be seen. Just me, bit OCD!

Sold the Xerxes and had been eyeing this up for a while. Had been looking at an Origin Live modded 1210 but sadly a little out of my price range in one go.
Thing is if I don't like this I'll be able to flog it and get a decent 1210....as i will have an arm and cart ready to go :)

Pretty much everything I buy is bought blind (deaf?) If I like it it stays if not then it gets moved on. So far i've had very few turkeys and a good deal of great kit doing this.
I do have an idea where i'm going with my set up so it's not completely random:) Though I do like trying new kit out....I put it down to a deprived youth.
The amp is a keeper and the current speakers will take some shifting to be honest. CDP is also a keeper I think. All this may change at a moments notice.
The last TT i bought as it was one of two tts I lusted after as a teenager (i'd had a couple of LP12s and the Xerxes was the other)

Like I said, guys, feel free to do whatever works best for you, but for me, I'd never buy blind, as the whole point (for me) is to minimise on the box swapping (and thus selling on of unsuitable kit) and maximise on music listening, by having a stable and settled system, which is difficult to improve (hence why I care not a jot about the resale value of the gear that I own, as it rarely gets sold)!

I don't go through much kit at all. I've been lucky with what i've bought and sold and it's allowed a clear upgrade path...if a little odd...and a bit... ish. Living where i do doesn't allow for a great deal of pre listening i'm afraid and listening at shows is a waste of time...let's be honest.
I'm very much a music listener to be fair; I've owned recording studios, record shops, Djd all over the UK and had a radio show for a few years. For me the kit is very much a means to an end, but yes I do enjoy playing with bits of kit that are a bit of a shot in the dark..anyone here that says otherwise is not being truthful imo.
I could quite happily torpedo down the route prescribed here and there, but I like to forge my own path and enjoy doing so. If the truth be known i'd be happy with a straight forward 1210 with a om10 on it, decent amp and a pair of ok speakers (i did this for 15 years or so) but that's not the point is it?
Others have a different route they choose to follow and all power to them....me I want to play when i'm allowed.

It's just that it shocks me somewhat how busy the classifieds section is of the Wam, especially, and now here (and in particular how many seem to 'live' in these areas, spending all their time buying and selling kit :eek:), as our Private Exhibitions section is now one of the busiest on the forum, and even busier than that on pfm. Therefore, for those taking part in that stuff, I always wonder what their ratio is of box-swapping to music listening...
I don't even look at the classifieds sections of any of the forums (or even eBay) unless I'm in the market to buy something, but I know of people who simply must trawl through them on a regular basis, just in case a 'bargain' comes up that they can't refuse. I'm sure it's fun, to a degree, but I can't help but feel that such behaviour encourages continual 'upgraditis', and in turn, fuels more than a little system dissatisfaction! ;)

Down here we only have richer sounds.
If i was spending £10,000 or so on a system i would never buy blind.
I've never spent more than a grand on a system so can't really lose much.

I'am always aware of resale value so this hasn't been a problem for me.
For what i can get for a £1,000 2nd hand with extremely careful looking plus hours scouring the web i couldn't get close for the same money new.

I don't even look at the classifieds sections of any of the forums (or even eBay) unless I'm in the market to buy something, but I know of people who simply must trawl through them on a regular basis, just in case a 'bargain' comes up that they can't refuse. I'm sure it's fun, to a degree, but I can't help but feel that such behaviour encourages continual 'upgraditis', and in turn, fuels more than a little system dissatisfaction!
:exactly: From experience I couldn't agree more! I had to wean myself off looking at all the forum classifieds several times a day, even when I wasn't looking for anything in particular ...
Thankfully my upgradeitis is all but cured as I would only be able to buy something if I sold some of my present kit so my options are limited.
You can never have too many TT-Arm-cartridges to play with so regular trawling of the classifieds isn't such a crime IMO.

The thorens/ ortofon/ spu is so musical and on the few jazz albums i have played it is sounding superb.
It is a loaner as i have a 301 coming sometime soon.
The voyd just bounces along and doesn't put a foot wrong imo.
Plays every genre of music i'am into very well.
Have just got a 1200 as i fancied one for 12" duties.
I'll try and put up a mini review of all three when i get enough time to have a good listen.

nice example of a pic where the 'mess' that quite a few would criticise I suspect all adds to a very successful composition - the colour-cast (I assume) also adds -giving it an almost monochrome / tinted look.
(I wanted to put a smiley looking knowledgeable and smoking a pipe at the beginning here, but there isn't one...)
oh - and it's a droolsome t/table and arms combination ;)

Its too long ago for me to say much. Carver made some nice kit back then CD players, tuners and a lovely step up transformer - I have one of those - but Bob Carver had a few odd ideas about adding a form of eq to the signal path in his pre-amplifiers and integrated amplifiers - I can't recall if it can be switched out or not. If I recall right I think it was called Sonic holography or some such thing.

Oh yes! The all-gray hammer finish 301 is, to my mind, the most attractive of the all 301's. They were used by the BBC in the '50s, fitted with a parallel tracking arm of the beeb's own design. I never liked the 'domestic' version with its pale cream finish.
If you buy one Marco, I would suggest you seek out a 'Schedule 2' version, with the oil lubricated bearing. The most sought after are the 'Schedule 1' versions with the grease lubricated bearing, and these fetch the highest price.

If you opt to use an original Garrard bearing sadly the oil bearing will not fit in an original Hammertone chassis (Or any grease bearing chassis) as the cut out in the chassis for the bearing housing does not allow for the oil feed reservoir. I have had several hammertone BBC units that were adapted for oil bearings after a tech took a hacksaw to the chassis...This somewhat punctured my chi :doh:

Toshiba SR-370 direct drive turntable, very heavy! Nearly twice the weight of my old SL-1210. Nearly a grands worth of ZYX cartridge in a TT that stands me in at around £180, paid about £80 for the TT and the Mission arm cost me under £100. It all works very nicely together.

Interesting, Geoff... Never saw one of those before. Interesting combination. So what accounts for all the weight - the plinth, platter, motor unit, or just a combination of everything? :)
Looks a bit like the motor unit used on a Pioneer PL-71.

There aren't many of these about Marco.
It has a very heavy resin composite base, the platter too is rather heavier than the average DD turntable item. I'd guess the whole package weighs about forty pounds. It's certainly much heavier than the various SL-1200/1210 Technics I've owned and seems every bit as capable.
This TT was featured in HFW a few months ago, funnily enough with the same Mission arm. It was regarded as a rather effective combination. Mine certainly delivers the goods. I was very lucky buying the TT and arm so cheaply.
I have two of these, the other is either for spares or for a full refurb. It works fine, but is scruffy.

As André said, they're RDC cones - although they should be the other way up, put it all together without thinking.
It's unlikely the PL71's staying though - I'm so hooked on my digital side these days that I'm really not 'into' vinyl. The microswitch under the 33rpm button needs replacing too and I really can't be bothered with the hassle at the moment. The deck is in nice cosmetic condition though, and has a brand new lid which was custom-made for it. Looks fabulous.
