Security Services have been able to intercept all forms of telecommunications for many years now, most of it scanned automatically by machines, so there is no change, that reality is here. Even encryption methods require decryption to be available to the security services, so it more begs the question why formalise this in law.

No criminal or terrorist group will have used targetable communications for at least the last 10 years, after all, look how long it took to find Osama et al. Even aerial surveillance dodging has become a routine for the average afghan shepherd boy....
Your average rioting youth is probably considerably less so aware.....

Government paranoia about their own people has been around since Adam, so it really begs the question as to what capability will this augment rather than the bogus headline justification?

The main difference is if this bill goes through the government will not have to prove in a court that they have good reason to require access to the material, they will just force telecommunications companies etc to hand it over, that is the difference.

Here's a radical thought, lets go back to writing letters to communicate lol

As Bob says it is a good headline but in practical term it will make little difference to what already happens. Telecom companies have been co-operating with the law enforcement like thsi for years, I know as I was a Police Liason officer for a while back in the nineties.

I'm not defending the Govt. stance on this, but what has not been pointed out is that they will still need a Judge's signature to acquire access to actual conversations and/or the content of messages. The material that is being referred to in the new legislation is the fact that a call or message was made, where from and where to, the time and duration.

The ConDem'ed have failed to mention that when Labour proposed this very change to law, it was blown out of the water by all opposition parties as a gross infringement of civil liberties.

If I'm honest, I don't have much time for the UK civil liberties groups, particularly those that rail against CCTV in towns. My belief is that only the guilty have anything to fear from this and I'd personally like those stupid enough to commit crimes on camera to get nicked.

That said, even I, Steve 'Hang 'em High' Gascoyne have to admit they are going to far with this one.
