Interesting Stan. Are they from Toshiba? What about the cable itself?
They are not from Toshiba. It's from one of these research companies that the Taiwanese government had set up and then sold off once they were profitable.
For testing purpose I am using poor quality leads so that I get the maximum of jitter inducing errors. It's only about 3mm thick and breaks out in a sweat at 96KHz and higher.
Are these new sockets something that 1st gen BM owners can install on their own devices? I'm using Toslink at the moment, so I'd be interested on doing the upgrade. I already have the cheap cable :)

I didn't receive enough samples of those sockets to try out. So I haven't fitted one to a TC-7530DC to find out how well it will perform as an upgrade. But as soon as I have agreed the final price and purchase of the 25MHz sockets I shall look into this. But removing the old socket is not a job for the faint hearted. These double sided boards can be hard to with. I have already had to rescue a few people with their mods done on a TC-7530DC.
Noted. The BM is sounding wonderful as is, so I guess there's no need to get into trouble because of a socket...
Hey, wondering if anyone has had a chance to compare the Mark Grant & MCRU linear supplies?

I've just bought Richard's Venomed Bushmaster, but definitely want a linear supply to give a fair comparison between my other DACs. Edging towards the MG supply as it's £85 cheaper...
I've been reading this thread with interest. Whilst I am not an owner of the Bushmaster (yet) I might just buy one as I have had the Caiman for a couple of years and want to move that to my Bedroom system to upgrade the stock SB Classic I use and get a decent headphone amplifier to boot.
All these people who 'rudely' come on here and criticise Stan and his products are frankly not worth waisting our time on.
I have always had good dealings with Stan. I've spoken to him quite a bit over email, being too lazy to ring and he's been not only prompt in his response but also detailed and offered more than you'd usually expect from any company. I've had dealings with a lot less understanding people so I think it is a little out of order to come on here and spout off at him.. If I did have a problem I would speak to him (or any other service provider) in person and not berate them on an open forum.
Stan, from what I see you're a good guy who has a considered (yes, maybe a little blunt on occasion) approach at providing what are great products and back service and thank you for the help you've given me, oh and the excellent Caiman which I doubt I'll ever get rid of, except to maybe upgrade to another Beresford product.
Paul.

Stan, do you know the (approx) dimensions of the new case? Thanks.
StanleyB
26-08-2013, 06:39
Sure. It's about 200mm wide by 140mm deep. The dimensions do not include anything sticking out though.
I am waiting for the front and back panels to get back from the printers. Werner and me were a bit late in getting the exact position of the various holes on the panels. So the position of the printed info on the panel was delayed.

Excellent, thanks Stan.
I guess this case (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/S-2207-Aluminum-enclosure-DAC-case-amplifier-chassis-DIY-BOX-/121145187192?pt=FR_Image_son_Composants_TV_son&hash=item1c34d0db78) will sit under it quite nicely and it seems plenty big enough to build a decent PSU into.

I have had confirmation from the factory warehouse that FEDEX is scheduled to pick up the shipment from them next week Thursday. So I should be able to start shipping the week after that.
I am thinking of separating the cost of the DAC, the power cord, and the power supply. The reason for that is that each type of power cord costs me a different amount to buy. The US power cord is the cheapest and the Australian power cord the most expensive. The fixed price system means that those ordering the DAC with a US power cord are paying more for the package relatively speaking.
The other reason is that some customers already have a suitable power cord and even an alternative power supply that might have cost them as much as the DAC. For them the purchase of a power supply and power cord that won't be used is a waste of money.
Anyone with some views on my intended approach?
Spot on Stan. I have a cupboard full of unused power supplies and mains leads as I guess do many others. Makes total sense to me.

Sounds like a good idea. I would maybe suggest that the appropriate DC power plug is included.
A good plan Stan! I have an after market PSU so don't want to pay for one I won't use http://theartofsound.net/forum/images/icons/icon14.png

Are you suggesting that customers could then solder a 2.1mm DC plug onto their power supply in preference to the DC plug they already have fitted to that power supply? That would be highly dangerous in most cases. There is little room for mistakes when soldering a DC plug or socket to a lead. I wrote off a few expensive power supplies in my time trying to do just that.

No.
But if you were DIYing a PSU having the appropriate plug would be handy. Although with hindsight, simply knowing its a 2.1mm allows someone to buy an appropriate one
From a personal perspective I wouldn't consider upgrading if I can't (re)use my Best of both Worlds PSU.
I just thought I would like to briefly express my delight with this product and with the excellent service Stan has provided.
Beresford Bushmaster Review
A bit of background first
I'm a hardened headphone audiophile and have owned/borrowed many headphones over the past three years. Something in the region of over 200. I'm a computer audiophile also, so naturally I've had plenty of dacs, amps and associated equipment including power filters, ssd based audio computers, cables, converters......you get the picture.
This is what I want to say: the bushmaster is among the very best of things in audio I have ever bought.
That's not an emotional overreaction or a product of new toy syndrome (mainly because I don't suffer from this - new toy regret is more like it). If I'm being honest the phonak 232 IEM's are the best and most important thing for me, being attached to my undershirt pretty much all day long. After a long burn in and a change of tips (klipsch gel's) these sound stunning; better than the ie800 and the k3003 in my opinion.
Dac/Amp Combo
From a sound perspective, it's the best dac/amp combo I've ever come across and believe me folks, I've been searching for something like this for years. It outperformed the Burson conductor when I tried them side by side. Mdac, black cube linear usb, yulong d100, nuforce hdp, audio gd nfb12.1, all sound inferior and the surprising thing is that's it pretty much the case with any headphone I test with. That's the D7k, D5k, ultrasone signature pro, edition 8, akg k550, Beyer T1, shure 940, mad dog fostex, hd800......
The all-round sound presentation is testament to the strength of the inbuilt headphone amp and how it interacts with the DAC. Both amp and dac are properly done unlike for example the Mdac and it's poor headphone amp implementation. I always feel it's a sound that's honest to the headphone i'm listening to. The bass isn't exaggerated where the d7k has a perfect amount out of this system, the k167 sounds as fast as it so often promises to be and the signature DJ becomes too much for all but the hardened bass head - again - as it were meant to be. The T1's sound glorious out of this system. Genuinely this bushmaster really gives it all that it needs; A proper bass response, natural timbre, extended highs, mature soundstage, good imaging and most of all tonnes of detail. One can get the T1's now for £600 and with the bushmaster you've got yourself a genuine high end headphone system.
Dac only
As a standalone Dac it's mighty. The Mdac is similarly impressive and as dac's I hold both to be up there, obviously all at least a definitive level above things like my rdac/MF vdac. Much has been said about this already on this forum, with a lot of folk using it as a dac only. I don't feel the need to add much more.
Amp only
As an amplifier (of course using the inbuilt dac) I have others that sound slightly better. The graham slee solo UL diamond is an example, but it is not superior by a major margin at all. It's slightly more detailed across the bass spectrum and also more impressive in vocal pieces. I sometimes with the modified d7k, get a bit spooked by how the slee portrays human vocals, delicately and with air (superior to the bushmasters amp). Most importantly for me is that it has a more relaxed high range and shows more capability in dealing with sharper sounds that can sometimes sound too accentuated on the bushmasters amp. The bushmaster always projects a large headstage, bigger and more impressive than the Graham Slee, and injects more air into the presentation too. It's quicker, more aggressive and more dynamic. Many a time therefore it sounds better, though the more relaxed Slee is my preference for long time listening.
The burson soloist SL I have is only better with headphones that are midrange heavy (n shaped rather than u shaped), such as the ultrasone signature pro. Actually the soloist makes this ultrasone sound so much more musical and lush than I have heard with other equipment. The difference is, well, massive, especially in the realm of comparing amps where differences are not going to be very large anyway.
The bushmasters amp is the next best for this, ahead of the graham slee which makes this ultrasone sound quite bland and boring. I guess this 'boring' comes in large to the soundstage portrayal of the slee never being vast - both the bushmasters amp and the soloist have inherently larger soundstages but the latter looses out when it comes to detail retrieval especially in the upper high ranges. The slee and the bushmaster are both stunningly detailed.
When we talk about PRAT and dynamics the bushmasters amp succeeds the soloist too, behaving much like the slee (or meier Jazz - similar sound to the slee except it's less competent across the board).
Overall it performs very very well and the fact that I am mentioning it among £500+ highly regarded amps should speak volumes. Against sub £200 amps, the bushmaster thoroughly succeeds many. Objective 2 included.
Conclusion
If you've read the above, you know how highly I rate this thing.
Stan was excellent and so open from the first time I called in May enquiring about the amp/dac and where to buy it. We had a long talk about all things headphone related, even though there wasn't any in stock as of the sad news about the workshop owner. I bought one on ebay and stan agreed to modify the gain so the volume pot is usable with sensitive headphones, and he carried this out with real honesty. And that's where I'd like to end this review - honesty. This thing cost me under £200 and technically, of course, more could be charged. I would pay more, but Stan feels that it would be dishonest so decided not to. Seriously Stan, with the market moving as it is, that decision really shines through.
I really look forward to the USB version of this piece of equipment.

Hi Aleem,
man thanks for your review. May I ask how would you describe the difference between Bushmaster and Burson conductor with HD800 phones? if possible amp only and also DAC+amp section.
Thanx Tomas
Great Review Aleem!
THanks!
Thanks for the appreciation guys!
The Conductor I only listened to as a dac/amp combination and used the denon d7k and 'fostex mad dog alpha t50rp.' With the fostex I thought the bushmaster beat the conductor hands down. It had much more authority, weight with each note and the overall presentation had more gravity. It just sounded more true to life compared to the conductor that gave a more thinner sound. The conductor had good speed and resolution, but highs were strident and the upper midrange sounded at times disjointed from the rest of the frequency spectrum. The fostex felt muddled up, like a headphone that is trying to give off a cold sound when in fact it is by nature a warm sounding headphone.
With the d7k differences were much less significant. I didn't try out both that much, so I can't say much, though I will say it was in it's fuller midrange presentation that the beresford won me over.
Addition to review above
Bushmaster with Fostex th900
Thanks to the kind folk over at HiFi headphones (brighton), a few days ago I in length tried the bushmaster with a fostex th900. I wanted to buy these headphones, but surprisingly found the build quality to be actually quite poor of a headphone £1200+. It's the same/worse as the £200 denon d2k. The cups are much heavier which I thought would have warranted a different headband/hinge design but no. The pads are stiffer and the clamp is more (a bad things for people with big heads like me - reason why I didn't get them). The packaging/accessories also smacked me in the face when I first saw it. Satisfactory for a headphone sub £200, not for something more.
About the sound. It's awesome.
Read Mike's review over at Headphonia:
http://www.headfonia.com/fostex-th900-and-th600/
In it he talks about the importance of a suitable amp, transforming these otherwise 'polite and proper' headphones into an industry leading sound. The graham slee UL diamond and Musical Fidelity M1HPAP both had the fostex sounding polite and proper. When I switched to the inbuilt amp, it really revealed itself. In other words, the inbuilt amp in the Bushmaster is thoroughly high end.
Mind you, that's not to say the other amps in mention are low performers - with the ATH W3000ANV (lovely headphone), they both sounded all round better than the bushmaster (esp the M1HPAP). I guess amp synergy is at play here too.
Thanks again to the guys at Hifi Headphones for letting me take 2 hours demoing equipment - the surprise of the bunch really was the graham slee bitzie. It sounded thoroughly impressive and really nice with the ultrasone sig pro.

I ran a MF M1 HPA as my headphone amp for a couple of years, had the early BM in my set up....in conjunction with senn 650S I found the BM was sonically superior as a head amp. My set up has evolved since then.....I look forward to purchasing a MK2 when funds allow. VFM and enjoyment of music are what this is about.

I haven't been here in a while but my experience with the Bushmaster 7530 isn't good. It wouldn't work with signals higher than 96k on optical and the coax input wouldn't play my 176k files. After a while it wouldn't recognize any signals at all so I threw it in the closet and replaced with a Rega DAC. Couple days ago I thought I would get it out and just use for a headphone amp if I could get it to recognize an input. I tried feeding a normal 44k signal via Toslink and coax and it would never pick up either. I could take the cable out of the bushmaster and plug into one of the Rega inputs (I did this with both optical and coax) and the Rega played them immediately. So now I just have a box in my closet that I guess I can just toss out. I didn't report the problem to Beresford, maybe I should have but I thought if it quit working in such a short time I didn't want to mess with it anymore but the Rega doesn't have a headphone jack so that's why I thought I would try to hook it back up. Oh well.

I had similar problems and have returned it. Soundwise, that was nothing to be talking about, which was other reason for return even if all worked perfectly.
Once the new mk2 version was out, I showed an interest to buy it, but lost interest because of previous failure.
All the beautiful things I read in forum about Bushmaster, were not like that in my experience.
I am also a bit disappointed with Stan's policy not to be able to extend 30 days return in some cases, as my main system is not in UK and I can not compare properly Bushmaster against other hifi equipment, just in 30 days.

I understand. I'm certainly not knocking anyone here who loves their Bushmaster and have had wonderful luck with it, I just don't have the same experience with the bushmaster that they did. I didn't purchase the bushmaster because it was fairly inexpensive, I purchased it because everyone was talking about how great it sounded and I wanted some of that. :eyebrows: I've been very pleased with the Rega DAC, some said that it wasn't up to snuff because the USB only would process up to 48k files but my Beresford didn't have USB and I don't plan to ever use a computer to stream files to my stereo anyway so that didn't bother me at all.

Exactly, I didn't purchase because of affordable price, but because of all nice things I read on forum. I am happy to try and buy again, but with some better return policy if I dont like it, because this forum talk could be misleading. At least this was in my case with Bushmaster.
With Caiman, I found more happiness and joy at the time.
thanks for sharing similar experience.
Why don't you guys ask Stan to look at a faulty Bushmaster you have purchased? After all, if it doesn't work and it's in warranty, that's what you should do. Moaning about it here without listening to a working model hardly helps. Oh, and I have read the complete post.
One more thing: the BM doesn't support 176k and doesn't claim to.

I did ask Stan and I got my refund. Thank you to Stan. I am not moaning, just saying what happened. I wish I received that beautiful sounding DAC like others have, but I have not. Well this is directly from the 1 page manual that comes with it "Maximum word length is 24 bits. Sample rates between 28 and 192 KHz are supported"...I don't see anything in there that says "well except for 176 KHz"...maybe it's just me but I thought 176 KHz fell somewhere between 28 and 192 KHz doesn't it? Ok go ahead and try to correct me again with some more of your factless logic. Here is the real truth for you, all people don't have the same luck with the same product and someone politely stating so shouldn't upset you so much but if you are going to make statements such as "doesn't support 176k and doesn't claim to" you need to maybe do a little research first.
I don't think MartinT is the one that is upset here. You obviously received a faulty BM so the logical thing would be to contact Stan instead of complaining about it in this topic. It is common knowledge that man made hardware isn't flawless. Do yourself (and us) a favour and inform the designer instead of us. Maybe Stan can use your information in his future designs so we can all benefit from it. Posting here that you bought a Rega dac instead hardly helps. Peace.

It looks like you trying to say that we only should post positive remarks about Bushmaster. Shouldn't we post anything what is related to Bushmaster, including faulty ones, or negative feedback. Where do I post that? My returned Bushmaster did not sound as good (of course it is subjective, but I tested it against low and high level of other devices, but sound was nothing to be talking about), as yours or MartinT one.
Or do we need to open another thread? Or another forum?
Good grief, I'm not upset! I just wonder at someone buying an item which is obviously faulty and then not contacting the manufacturer or invoking the warranty process.

Well Robo and I were very polite. If I go to a forum and every post is a glowing endorsement it makes me suspicious of the moderators removing unfavorable posts. We didn't have the great experience with the bushmaster that other did and the problems we ran into should be posted. We didn't come on here and scream that the bushmaster is a POS or anything like that. If the Bushmaster won't play 176 KHz files or play anything above 96 KHz via optical others should know that, that would have been a deal breaker for me. Now with that being said I liked the bushmaster while it was working and Stan was great to deal with. I thought maybe something was wrong with my hi-rez streamer to the DAC and didn't know until I got another DAC in my home and was able to test. Well the other DAC just happened to be the Rega and every sample rate I threw at it just worked, on optical and coax. Again no one here said anything bad about Stan and all opinions should be respected, we don't need anyone criticizing us for what we did or didn't do. I had a new DAC that played all sample rates even via optical so I just kept it and moved on, nothing wrong with that.
Indeed, Bobby, and it was only this comment that made me wonder if you had experienced problems with the BM and put it away without contacting Stan.
After a while it wouldn't recognize any signals at all so I threw it in the closet and replaced with a Rega DAC.

I am not asking for glowing praise. All comments are welcome. That's the one way I get an idea of what the problems are and what the good points are. It is well known that I had some problems with the firmware code in the TC-7530DC in the first production from 2012. Since then I have released a couple of updates until the problems were finally solved in the code update from April 2013. Subsequent code releases have further enhanced the basic TC-7530DC from its initial performance abilities. Anyone who asked for a refund instead of a code update at the time were given a refund. But the actual numbers are less than 10 compared to a total sale of close to 1K.
What I am a bit puzzled by is why two customers who bought the TC-7530DC between July 2012 and August 2012 would then come here in March 2014 to complain with obvious bitterness.
edmondwolfman
24-03-2014, 15:20
No bitterness, just stating my experience. I believe I stated that I got the bushmaster back out to try and use as a headphone amp. I had completely forgotten about it until I wanted to use headphones and needed something with a headphone jack. I don't really dwell or agonize over this stuff, hell I found my Emotiva RPA-2 amplifier last week in my garage still in the box from getting the VU meter LED repaired last year. I didn't have another amp to use while it was going to be "out" for repair so I decided to buy an Odyssey Kismet amp. I put the Odyssey in my system and when the Emotiva came back I just put it in my garage. So I guess I'm bitter about Emotiva now too since I said the VU meter LED was bad and it's been in my garage ever since. I'm at the point in my life where if I buy a new piece of equipment I just remove the one that it is replacing and most times forget about it until I need it for something or come across it like I did the Emotiva amp.

Hey Stanley I wasn't sure if it was just me but lately my 7530 is acting odd...sounds great when it finally powers up...just has issues with exactly that. I described the problem on your site's support E-mail but didn't know if you read this just the same. On my glass interconnect Toslink which is the only thing hooked up to the BM, it acts as if no signal is there and instantly powers off. That's only my take on it. I have a source playing as I power up the front switch (if such a thing helps it detect a source) but more and more often it is acting in this manner I have noticed. It takes several times of unplugging the unit from the back before I get 'lucky' to have it run through the auto detect light sequence. I absolutely LOVE the sound quality, size, function and look of my BM but just reading your post is there a firmware update that mine is need of or is the 12volt power supply flaking out? My Toslink is tight on each end, checked. Almost thought it was that and both Tos1 and 2 did the same thing. Mine is of the mid 2012 run models judging form my posts here. I am not asking for a refund in any shape or form, just something is amiss. May you help at your convenience? :) I can send it off to you or whatever is needed. Many thanks!

Hi David, I have replied to your email :). And as a reminder to anyone else: personal techinical issues with a DAC can only be handled via email by the techncial team at homehifi. It is easier for us to then dig up old email exchanges and send out follow up comments to specific persons who may otherwise not pick it up in a lengthy forum thread.

Understood and thanks for the reply Sir!
[QUOTE=StanleyB;414646]Hi Sergio, can you describe for me what a better sound means to you? I can then have a clearer idea. But frequency and technology wise, the Bushmaster has a better frequency response (1Hz to 20KHz at 0dB deviation). This is mainly due to the direct coupled audio output (i.e no opamps and capacitors in the signal path), which retains signal purity and tonal balance of the audio signal. So there is no phase shift or filters in the audio path either.

BTW, what is the real frequency response for 7520SEG in that case?
