Anybody planning to watch the day's proceedings ?
I personally would rather have a root canal done without anaesthetic - Royalist I am not.

NOT a blatant attempt to win the "xxxxx thread prize" - ;) - but what are your thoughts on the wedding, and do you give a sh!t about it?

Cynical attempt at diverting the public's attention from the cr@p we're in - or not?

Will you watch it? (I will - my 2 year 7 month old is obsessed with princesses at the moment, so I suspect she will love it!) - I remember watching Princess Anne's wedding with my mum and Granny - so we will be trying to give Avatar some similar memories, with flags, bunting and a "party" - are you planning anything?

Personally I love all the pomp and ceremony of a royal occasion, however irrelevant it may be to real life - and always good to show the world that Britain is still Great...

Princess Anne's wedding day I remember - I was on a trip to Evoluon in Eindhoven.
Evoluon was Phillips technology showcase - for all I know it might still be.

If your not a Royalist and you don't care to watch then that's your choice.

I won't be able to watch it because i'm working but I am a Royalist and I wish them all the best.

I am ex Royal Navy and would have been proud to have fought for my Queen and country if it had been needed.

Cynical attempt at diverting the public's attention from the cr@p we're in - or not?

Karl Marx once asked - "Is Religion the Opiate of the Masses?" And quite probably, back then, he was correct.

Today though, it seems to me that "Royalty is the Opiate of the Masses" Along with the cult of celebrity, the mistaken belief that sport is important (surely THE biggest hoax modern times?), reality TV and noise pretending to be music.

And as Paul Weller stated so cogently all those years back - "And the public wants what the public gets". Quite effing so. He then went on to opine that "The braying sheep on my TV screen make this boy shout, make this boy scream"

Can't be doing with any of it TBH. I am taking the opportunity to drive up to see my father that day, in the hope that most people will be in watching it. I doubt I will see 1 minute of it and won't read about it either.... weddings to me should be private and personal occasions, not some media mêlée.

It's nothing to do with that. The Queen still garners huge respect and is probably the last monarch this country will ever rally around.

However, I would rather stand in a wardrobe than watch that wedding. I shall avoid it like the plague.

I wish William and Kate all the best , FWIW i think he is a good lad , Diana would be proud, but i do wonder about the cost ! And the state the nation is in , i could be mistaken , but i sense a lot of people are starting to flash the plastic because of the feel good factor ? I just hope its real money

With the cuts about to kick in , and the full effect will impact later in the year ? Remember back in 81-82.

As far as I'm concerned, the groom is the future King, he seems like a nice and well-adjusted chap (thanks to Diana, I'm sure), Kate seems very sweet and is certainly easy on the eye and I wish them both the very best. Heck, I may even glance at the highlights of the day on the evening news.

However, other than that I have the same amount of interest in the event that I would for the wedding of any other couple that I don't know and am not likely to meet, namely not much! Consequently whilst my saddo of a sister is hosting a "dress up in a posh outfit and a hat and watch the whole damn thing" party for all her lady friends, my brother-in-law and I will be playing golf.

Incidentally, my wife will be working that day but she assures me that had she not been working she would rather have come and caddied for me than attend my sister's party and be forced to watch the event! :)

He is up to his neck in work and senses that Banbury is on the verge of a boom , his own opinion of course but i am sensing it as well , it is a very industrial town these days , in the past it was all agricutural etc,etc .

Diana was one of the most wonderful women, a massive loss & one i personally still can't get over to this day.

Presumably your accolades are based on direct personal experience then – rather than a 'review?

Surely you aren't relying on the carefully crafted image in the media? After all, isn't it the case that many of us here are of the view that our industry mags are rarely reliable? Thus taking that argument further can it be that the Tabloids are more representative of the 'truth' that the audio mags? Somewhow I doubt it.

Personally speaking I feel this deceased Royal bimbo had much to answer for including being the pebble that caused the avalanche of the dimming down of this once great country. She made it ‘chic’ to be thick. What a role model! My heroes require more than a decent bra, a cheesy grin and prevalence for Duran Duran, Elton John et al.

And was all this godlike status based on? Absolutely nothing other than the brilliance of the media editors who concurrently spotted two facts and – gawd bless ‘em – putting them together. First the unfathomable mawkish sentimentality of the gullible British public in particular and the English speaking world in general and (b) a conveniently dead Royal. Brilliant. To describe them as the gutter press does them a disservice. More like the Goebbels press in my opinion. He’d be so proud.

Was it all her fault? Of course not. But she was a catalyst for every dim woman in every Asda in every part of the Country to have something of zero material value to look forward to – X-Factor of course. Celebrity wins – okay! What a legacy. The damaging effects will last far longer than the laughingly named 'People's Princess' position as a footnote in history.

And again I return to Mr. Weller and his hopefully immortal and certainly prescient words: “The braying sheep on my TV screen make this boy shout, make this boy scream!”

Finally, bearing in mind this is an audiophile site, permit me if I may to make an audiophile / Royalty analogy. The importance of the deceased Diana to the privilege of living in this country is as miniscule as the performance of Linn amplification and speakers to musical credibility.

What bugs me is how the media automatically presumes that every f*cker in the country is GUARANTEED to be intently interested in the minutiae of events surrounding this yawn-inducing wedding parade, and so far more interesting and important news and programmes are brushed aside simply to sate the obsession of Royalists getting their fix of pomp and ceremony!

I object to my viewing choices on the day being impinged upon and dominated for hours on end by a vulgar pantomime I have about as much interest in as the fetid contents of the Queen's panty gusset.

"Howard:

Hmm. I see. If I recall correctly, Mr A. Hitler was [a] a vegetarian who hated the idea of cruelty to animals [b] was a dog lover [c] a family man [d] charismatic [e] un-phased by the complexities of cutlery [f] was a confident speaker [g] a self-starter - and so on. All laudable qualities. Hardly representative of his other activities though is it?

Based on this I would take the view that intelligent people (there must be a few left in the UK in the era of X-Factor, etc?) do not base their assumptions on media portrayal. If this were not the case then I guess we'd still be burning witches. Perhaps they still do in your area?

Incidentally, I guess you know her lads too do you? You do? Oh that's fantastic!

PS:

Personally I’m hoping that the days of public adulation based on (a) a decent chest (b) massive dental engineering (c) a crappy grade in a dim-wit degree such as Art History (d) a cheesy grin and (e) giving the appearance of an IQ lower than their biological age, is passing. Sadly though, the unthinking masses still gobble up the Goebbels-like myth. Meanwhile for those that really care about matters more important than celebrity and sport, Britain is not repeat not some sort of glorified theme park. Or if it is then I guess it’ll be closing time quite soon. Oh well.

Its quite disappointing to see the obvious hate toward the Royal family on this forum. Its one thing to not want to watch the Royal wedding but quite another to spew out a load of hate towards a group of people that none of us really know that well.

A couple of posters in particular have gone down in my estimation to the point I have hovered over the 'ignore option' Something I have never even considered before on any forum I belong or have belonged to.

For example - I can't see the attraction of football so have decided not to read that thread as appose to slagging off the game and their supporters.

Everyone is entitled to their say of course but there is a limit.

I suggest the title of this thread is changed to 'Those who won't be watching the royal wedding' or the 'Anti Royalist thread'

That's the thing about people, they will express their opinions

I personally have nothing against the royal family as people, as I don't know them, and nor do you for that matter (just a guess), but in this part of the 21st century the mere presence of a royal family is a complete anathema to me.

No, I don't, but then neither am I "Anti Royal". I just have no particular interest in them or what they get up to.

What I object to is the obscene, yes OBSCENE amount of OUR money that's been spent on this wedding, which would be far better put to use helping the homeless and poor in this country have some sort of a life, never mind £22 million pound wedding rings, etc, or it given to the starving kids in Africa.

Not long ago we had Children in Need, and witnessed such horrific suffering and poverty that simply shouldn't exist in the 21st century. So feel free to call me 'anti-Royalist' if I struggle to square those horrific images still in my head of those poor kids who literally have NOTHING, with those of the vulgar opulence which will be lavished on those two 'chinless wonders' on Friday!!

Look at it this way Marco, you obviously have standards to live upto, would you marry in a registry office? No because it would be demeaning to your standard.. Royals neither would marry in a less fashion than what they are, they are Royal, Tax money hasnt much to do with it, you pay your taxes regardless. Money spent on other things! well theirs departments funded, a certain amount of money to be allocated to which ever department no more.Regardless of any surpluss cash any department gets no more..

Can i just point out to people who think QE does nothing, she is important, she is the head of the armed forces as an example, shes the one that declared that her country is at war, unless youd rather have some MP mad man making the decisions?

That's all fine, dude. It's your opinion and you're entitled to it. I (mostly) have a different view :)

On AoS, we will always allow people to express their opinions freely, within the boundaries of our ethos, no matter how controversial they are, or against those of the majority. Therefore, in that respect, the views on this thread of Royalists or anti-Royalists are equally welcome.

Personally, the sooner this wedding bollocks is over, the better, and then we can all return to normality.

The closest I got to royalty was eating at the Damon-i-Koe restaurant in Islamabad,it sat on top of a huge hill top over looking the Fasil mosque.
There was pictures of Princess Diana sitting at the very window seat I was sitting in.

Hmm, not quite sure we’ve got a full grip on how important or not the head of state is with regard to policy etc in a “democratic” state with multiple party participation and a civil service of some sort

While the list of buffoons acting as head of state in the USA may look pretty scary, thankfully they aren’t able to “dictate” policy as such.
Sure, the Queen is pretty inoffensive and virtually powerless in the national decision making process as a head of state.
But, it’s not the Queen, or even the royal family that’s the problem, it’s the fact that in the 21st century we still have a Monarch with, we have been led to believe, divine right to rule.
It’s this combination of Church and State that have supported the privileged class system in this country for hundreds of years that I object to, and this wedding is just another public display of the upper classes ability to waste more money than any of us could ever dream of spending on a bloody wedding ffs.

So great, enjoy your day off and the TV spectacular if you must; after all, your paying for it ;)

I don't think there was any objection to Wallace Simpson being a commoner, merely that she was a divorcee (twice, as it happens).

If this were the 1930s there'd be no constitutional objection to William marrying a commoner.
Ironically enough it was with the arrival of the Germans (House of Hanover) that the preference for marrying other Royals became the common practise amongst British Royalty, which is probably where your idea stems from.

If you look at Royalty around the time of the First World War you get an idea of just who was related to whom, and the distinct impression that the whole nasty affair (First World War) had more than an element of family fallout about it.

Dude, that's cool, as it's your view, but when you refer to "we" and "us", as in the British, leave me out of it, as I'm really Italian (with Scottish connections), which is largely why I have little interest or empathy in what the British, or particularly English, get excited about on occasions like this....! ;)

LOL... I don't care about, or have any interest in stuff like that, mate. We live here because it suits us at the moment, and North Wales is a lovely place to be. I have a great life and want for almost nothing (through bloody hard work - unlike those two stoaters who are getting married tomorrow!)

;)

And I don't hate the English - FAR FROM IT! I've got many English friends, who are lovely people, and who I care a lot for, but the fact is my roots are Italian, and so for that reason I cannot be as passionate or patriotic about Britain or England, as the English or genuinely British are.

It's just how it is, dude. You can't pretend to be something you're not

The Royal Family costs the British taxpayer around £38.2 Million a year. (Based on the last complete Financial year - 2009-10). That's 62p per taxpayer, per year. If anyone on here truly finds that obscene, then send me a PM with your PayPal address and I'll refund your share for you! ;)

The country receives the revenue from Crown Estates - not the Royal Family - the profit in 2010 was £210.7 Million. So before you even consider the impact on business and tourism, they ain't costing us a penny...

Marco
28-04-2011, 11:14
Well, Alex, quite frankly, I'd rather that the £38.2 million a year was spent on creating more homes for the homeless, and reducing poverty in this country, or on education, or the NHS, or on ANYTHING that's rather more productive than where it currently goes.....

Let the buggers in Buckingham Palace fend for themselves - they can certainly afford to from the value of their own personal fortunes!

Marco
28-04-2011, 12:03
Andre,

End of the day the amount of money the Country & Royals have has nothing to do with anyone, you pay taxes on your earning simple as that, weither this wedding cost a Billion or a thousand pound you still pay the same amount of taxes month after month. The only reason i see is because you people begrudge paying your taxes, typical greedy people who want everything & not prepared to put a slice back into the system.

You don't realy have a say in anything so you can moan & protest till your blue in the face, the simple thing is if you dislike how this country is run piss off to another, i think you'll find there be a whole lot more you dislike about how other are run.

As Alex points out it cost you jack all so why moan? finding homeless homes etc etc isnt really you peoples concern is it! But if you feel it is then set up deirect debit to your fav concern, yeh like f**k you will, cos all this crap thats getting blurted out stems from envy.

Re: the bits in bold, count me out, dude. I don't begrudge paying taxes (and probably pay more than most), when it goes towards deserved causes - and, for me, funding the Royal Family doesn't come into that category. In fact, in this day and age, it's an outrage.

As for envy, LOL! I'm very happy with my lot in life, thank you very much, and I wouldn't thank you in the slightest for being in their shoes!

Being in the media spotlight 24/7, having almost no privacy, and in danger of being killed by some fanatic, at any time, is WAY too big a price to pay for having such enormous wealth.

So, I'll stick to what I've got, dude, which is more than enough to satisfy me and also those I care for, and for which I thank God for every day! ;)

Animal Farm is a warning about Communism - getting rid of the Monarchy is just another step down that road - is that what you want? Cos that's what'll happen.

I really don't understand why people think that ritual and tradition are unimportant and that we can just scrap the lot and it will make no difference.
Ritual and tradition are far more important than money - thye are what hold society together. When I was young I was very sceptical of the whole Monarchy thing - but age and experience has taught me that it has great value - intangible though it may be.

have to agree with Andre that some people are sounding a bit chippy - and Marco - if you are Italian then surely it is none of your bloody business what the English do?

Are you Edgar J Hoover in disguise ;)

The peoples republic of France seem to be doing rather nicely, and I doubt the US is on the verge of communist insurrection...:)

A monarchy is a Totalitarian Dictatorship...

As for ritual and tradition, lets start burning a few witches, and how about some human sacrifices at stone henge...

P.S. it's the British taxpayer that's paying for this not just the English, so we British are entirely at liberty to express our feelings

A monarchy is a Totalitarian Dictatorship...

:

We have a Constitutional Monarchy - very different from an Absolute Monarchy.

The advantage is the powers of the state are seperated - for example the Armed Forces swear alleigance to the Monarch and not to whatever wanker happens to be Prime Minister.

As for France doing okay - where do I start with that one? Ever been there ? They have a legal system that assumes you are gulity until proven innocent - wonderful that...

“Animal Farm is a warning about Communism - getting rid of the Monarchy is just another step down that road - is that what you want? Cos that's what'll happen.”

That’s not what’s happened in the majority of countries that have separated the church and monarchy so I’m not sure on what you base that assertion.

Would I want a communist regime (?) Possibly not although I’m not convinced it’s really evil incarnate as the USA for example would have us believe. It is after all a system and like any system its success or failure largely depends on those who administer it.

And yes I agree with you, tradition and ceremony are very important within any society but it’s the choice of which traditions and ceremonies that society chooses to demonstrate and celebrate.

Only because we actively brought down the Absolute Monarchy and forced a Constitutional One in its place.

Ever been to France??? Yes, I've managed to see a little bit of the world in my own small way...

I wasn't aware that the queen was responsible for our legal system, she hides that one under a bushel, perhaps now we're in the EU she might be able to sort out La Belle France's legal problems...after the wedding of course ;)

Just wondering.............Isn't there a law somewhere that says that retrospectively, any assets obtained illegally or by other 'dubious' means are forfeit providing evidence can be shown to prove the fact.
Ok...so we have and 'family' who has untold wealth and assets which were gained not only off the backs of citizens of this country but from all round the world.
Documentation and evidence certainly exists as the 'Royals' history is as well documented as anything has ever been......
The big question for me is the thing about retrospective appication of todays laws and standards.....the government seems able to justify this in 'certain' cases but seem unwilling to apply it in others.
In light of this, I think my question is obvious.

All joking aside, one of my life mottos is "change the things you can, don't worry about the things you can't" - that kind of applies to the Monarchy - whilst I may have come across all pro-Royalist, you should always take what I have to say on some of these "contentious" matters with a pinch of salt. ;) But at the end of the day, I'd rather spend my energy on matters where I can make a difference - no matter what I or anyone else thinks about the Royal family, we are unlikely to change it. And anyway, if you could see the look of excitement on a two year old's face at the mere mention of a real Princess, you would embrace the madness too! :)

My last words............
I'm bloody fuming..My poor little great niece (14 mnths) had a hospital appointment this morning...she gets to the hospital only to find out that the appointment was cancelled due to the f.....g wedding.......Nobody told them, she has had the date and been waiting for this appointment for months.
Seems the world has gone crazy after all.....theres more important things than watching some f.....g inbreed getting married.....F..K IT..........I'm done with this $h1t

Not good, Ray. I'd be bloody fuming, too!

It's all been said before, but it's the way that these things totally overwhelm EVERYTHING, as if NOTHING else in life matters at that time, and we've all just meekly to accept it and put our normal lives on hold, that does my tits in.

I realise there are those that are interested in this sort of thing, but there are also some who are not. I am not, and I have as much right to say so as those who do. As for those who say things like' they are just like us' well I have news for you, they are nothing like you.

Edited to add.... in such trying times, rather than cheer us up, I think this show of obscene wealth just reinforces how detached these people are form the realities of life that many of us take on the chin every day. As for all the hangers-on and yes men on the TV :steam:

I saw the last Royal wedding and it ended badly, did anyone see there Royal divorce?
Then Diana ends up dead in a tunnel with an Egyptian sheik.
Any one want to take bets on how or if this one will end?

There was so much media here in the U.S. of her life and death I thought they would put a live video camera in the lid of her coffin so the world could still get Princess Diana updates for another good 100 years. Maybe taking a picture of her face once a day.
I don't like to see peoples lives made into a circus.

I think they'll stay the course, as the two of them have been living together for quite a while now and the whole body-language seems different to me. Kate isn't as feckless as Fergie was (and still seems to be by all accounts) and looking back at Chas & Di now, the inevitable was there for all to see right from the engagement interview (whatever love means etc...).

I wish them well and hopefully they'll have a good few years together begore the media circus takes them on fully...

As promised, we've just returned now, half-pished, from polishing off this lot.... First off, Del had made two lots of the cannelloni (we'd had first of all on Sunday), so we ate the second lot today, freshly made, (and it was so nice, it was no 'hardhship' enjoying it again!):

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5313/img0616ug.jpg (http://img9.imageshack.us/i/img0616ug.jpg/)

And then, as shown earlier from a random Internet picture, but this time I think even better, the Scalloppine al Limone (with Mitze, one of our cats, vying for our attention!):

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/843/img0619ph.jpg (http://img3.imageshack.us/i/img0619ph.jpg/)

Veg was steamed asparagus, celery, green beans, purple-sprouting broccoli and baby sweetcorn, with roasted cherry tomatoes in garlic and basil, and potatoes roasted with rosemary. All herbs came from our own garden.

Wine (for the connoisseurs among us) was a rather lovely Barbera d'Asti (full-bodied with nice sharpness and acidity, ideal to compliment white meats), and a chilled Pinot Grigio - both going rather well the veal with lemon sauce.

If the scran was HALF as good at the Royal Wedding, then they'll indeed have dined like Kings.... ;)

Ooops - forget the food, the cats have just spotted William and Kate passing by (maybe they're popping in for lunch?):

Possibly, please remember what Martin posted though ;) As he quite rightly mentioned, people can & often are different when behind a keyboard than face to face.

I just try to be myself whether on here or in real life. I guess you'd have to ask those that have met me whether i'm sucseeding at it

Indeed, Martin! Personalities are 'opened up' rather more when there isn't simply the written word to go on ;)

However, like Dave says, emotive subjects like this are always interesting for getting a handle on people's 'world view'....

Cheers, Andy. It wasn't all just for me, though! ;)

It also should be noted that, when possible, we always have our main meal at lunch time, and at night have little more than a light snack. It's healthier to eat that way if you can :)

I thought the Bishop of London's sermon at the start was great, and the choice of music was good. Jerusalem is a big favourite of mine when it comes to massed-choral performances, and the new song written for the occasion (by John Rutter I think) - the singing was excellent. I'm very ambivalent about the concept of monarchy, but I think how these spectacles are is part of what makes this country distinct from any other.

I just hope their marriage is for good, unlike all the others. I suspect that William and Kate married because they wanted to rather than because it was expected or needed, and I think that should make a big difference to it's chances in the long term.

Absolutely (and Neil's comments.)

The music and setting were fantastic - it was great that the weather held off for the magnificent 1902 State Landau to be used to take them from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace with the Captain's Escort of the Household Cavalry looking absolutely awesome. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flypast was as spine-tingling as ever.

William driving his father's Aston Martin to Clarence House was a nice touch.

Meanwhile, Avatar kept asking to watch Peppa Pig!

I didn't watch any of the build up, and will avoid any retrospectives or highlight programmes like the plague, but the few hours watching it live were thoroughly enjoyable, and as Dave R eluded to, no other country puts on such a spectacle like the British. I hope the future King and his new bride have a long and happy life together.

Being proud of this country, and I'm thinking of things like Avebury, Stonehenge, the Industrial Revolution, the Peak Distict, Highlands, the Welsh Valleys and a bit of quaint pomp and circumstance is quite different to an imperialistic kind of nationalism John. It doesn't mean to do anyone else down, just reflect a bit on what I think is worth celebrating...
