Hmm - it's a big question when you start thinking about it...

off the top of my head-

1. The Sopranos - so far ahead of everything that has gone before, especially quality of the performances and the production values.

2. Hill Street Blues - the previous benchmark IMHO...

3. The Prisoner - took chances and forced the viewer to think (or switch channel...)

4. Any of Steve Coogans stuff (Paul Calf, Partridge, Saxondale etc.)


Andre - Space 1999 - loved it when I was ten but watched it all again quite recently and the second series in particular is shockingly poor...It's depressing to re-watch this stuff 30 years on and realise how much one's young imagination was filling in the blanks - Blakes 7 and Star Trek are good examples of that. They were more than the sum of their parts only because the characters were good - the storylines were almost always lame and the production values universally poor.
