Default Gil Scott-Heron - New Album due February 2010!

Gil Scott-Heron is one of my all-time musical heroes and after years since his last release (Spirits, in 1994) spells in prison and rehab, he's back, with a new album slated for February 2010.

Here are a few of his classic moments:

Is it too much to hope he'll hit the UK on tour?

Thanks for the heads-up Nick, I like some of Gill Scott-Heron's stuff, though I'm no expert - good to see he's making a comeback and one to look out for.

I've had tickets to see him twice - but only seen him once. The first time he got nicked in the States just before the tour kicked off and never made it to the UK. The second time he played the Jazz Cafe in London and was fantastic. He is a storyteller as much as a great jazz-funk musician and poet, and a live show with him is very special. Did you see the BBC3 documentary about him a few years ago? It was a joy seeing him talking about his work, and some great archive footage too.

Craig Charles has just played a track on his show, encouraging, fingers crossed the rest of the album is up to scratch.

    From his mailshot recieved today...

Gil Scott-Heron, without doubt one of the most important voices in 20th
century music is back. It is his first new material in 13 years and sees
him sounding as vital and forward thinking as ever. Check out the new
single "Me and the Devil", taken from the forthcoming album "I'm New Here"
(Out February 8th (UK) / February 9th (USA)).

Available via digital download, 'Me And The Devil' is also accompanied by a
stunning video by Coodie & Chike with Michael Sterling Eaton, the team
behind numerous Kanye West and Mos Def videos. See the video at
    http://bit.ly/meandthedevil

You can pre-order the album from:

I'm not sure I go for the sparse production. I could do with more of the old jazz-funk thing. But that would be to deny old GSH his tendency to push forwards / never look back. He talks about this on a fantastic little interview he did for Newsnight last year.

Still hoping he comes to the UK in 2010!

Yes, Gil Scott-Heron is great. Just bought Pieces Of A Man on vinyl and looking for more. I started with "Reflections" in the eighties, great album too.

    Cheers

Pieces Of A Man is a consistently great album. The title track has truly classic GSH lyrics. Winter In America is also a great album. I'll pull out some other recommendations when I get home!

"The Prisoner" is my favourite track on that album. Love the bass and that jazzy piano with the drums steppin' in. Real fun.
