    Default Greetings from Kent

    Hello all

I've been lurking for a while, not much to say just yet, just soaking things up. I'll be looking to ugrade my system soon and this is the first place I'll come to for advice.

I'm currently listening to music from the computer through an Onkyo NDS 1 then a Beresford 7510 dac, Cambridge Audio A1 amp and Rogers LS4a speakers. Lots of room for improvement but it's knowing where to start!

A second system is the computer through a Topping TP30 amp and Mission 731 which is fine for what and where it is - heapdhones (Grado SR60i) sound great through the Topping.

I've got a Garrard 401 tunetable and a Neat tonearm as a project for a rainy day.

Dahdit because I was a signaller in the armed forces before I discovered the 'great indoors'.

    Steve

Hi Steve and welcome to AoS. I am a Kentish man myself although I now live in Northamptonshire. I miss the old county and I harbour many happy memories from when I was a kid

    Hi Steve, welcome to AoS.

Dunno what the weather was like in Kent today, but it was raining in Suffolk - get that 401 sorted!

    What's your favourite music?

    Hope you enjoy the forum.

    Cheers fellas,

Aye Dave, born a man of Kent, now a Kentish man (or the other way round - never could remember)

It's been a fine day here Alex apart from a biblical downpour this afternoon. I listen to all sorts of music and just signed up to Spotify Premium so there's stacks to discover. First gig was the Fall, memorable ones were the Smiths, Miles Davis, Stanley Jordan, A Cerain Ratio, Gong (Here and Now Band) and an industrial band called Test Department (mindblowing). I probably listen mostly to acoustic guitar music these days and twang a Levin Super Goliath LT18 acoustic when I get the chance, I know a lot more about guitars (setting up, adjusting etc.) than hifi.

Things I've been thinking about (randomly) are trying a valve amp, maybe a Quad 303 or other vintage amp, an Arcam wireless dac, Micromega Mydac. I appreciate the speakers will have to go at some point but I quite like them in that set up. MP3 at 320kbs (Spotify) might not justify a Carlos Fandango system - plus my hearing suffered in my old job. I'll collect my thoughts at some point and be specific. Not sure that vinyl is for me - the arm and deck cost me a fiver when I was a teenager (many moons ago)!

Cheers Al, I had it at my dads for many years when I went off on my adventures and asked him about it a couple of years back. He told me that he'd skipped it! But I found it in the loft... phew

Amazingly (over) engineered bit of kit as you probably know. Its serial number dates it to '74, I bought it on a piece of plywood with the Neat arm in '83 and it's not been used since so there's probably very little wear on it - not sure if I could do it justice!

    Nice one Alex!

I was hoping I wouldn't have to explain that one.

    Welcome to AoS Steve.

You may not have to explain the reference to Carlos Fandango, but I'm slightly intrigued by your Forum name of "dahdit". "Dah dit" is the phonetic rendering of the Morse code 'dash dot' or "N". Does your family name begin with "N"?

Enough of these speculations, welcome again to the Forum - and get that 401 up and running as soon as possible.
