Default Catching up on turnable stuff

Having arrived home safely after 6 months in Camp Bastion, where things are not entirely as portrayed by the 24 hour news channels, I am treating myself to a series of new vinyl toys. The new Ortofon ST-80SE SUT has already been mentioned, and will be here on Tuesday, but on top of that I also have a Martin Bastin PSU coming for the TD124, which will enable me to ditch the eddy brake and lift the deck's musical capabilities significantly. To cap that, I've also decided to get the Swissonor non-magnetic ferrous platter and new top platter for the TD124 (my existing top platter is slightly warped). A new Benz Wood SL was bought just before I went away and will get installed shortly.

All of this should mean a rather special TD124! I hope to pick up the ESL57s from Tom (Montesquieu) this week too.

    It's nice to be back!

Welcome back, Hugo, glad you're in one piece. Did you say ESL57s?! They will be rather different from your Tannoys. Can't wait to hear the upgraded Thorens.

Yes, ESL57s! Bought off eBay a few weeks back while I was still in Afghanistan. I paid a fair price for them, and if they don't suit I can always move them on. The main reason for trying the ESL57s is that I really need something that will work well at low volumes in a smallish room, and which can be shifted out of the way when not in use. The Tannoys will always be a pair of big boxes and I will probably have to let them go (after some restoration, refurbishment and crossover work). I still have the Avalons to fall back on.

The ST-80SE SUT has arrived. It's quite a chunky thing - far more substantial in the flesh than the pictures suggest!

I picked up the ESL-57s from Tom's last night and they are presently singing like larks in my living room, even though they are sitting on the floor without stands. A huge thank you to Tom (Montesquieu) and helpful members over at HiFi Wigwam Hoops On Toast (Rob) and Cable Monkey (Henry) for collecting and moving the Quads for me. I owe you all several drinks in thanks.
