So, you may ask, why have I gone over to the dark side?
Three reasons really.
1. I have designed and built a simple 2-way BR speaker using the Mark Audio Tweeter No3 and Woofer No6 instead of the usual single driver FR speaker.
2. The cabinets are skinned in a rather nice Santos Rosewood veneer which as you can see from the attached photos is a rather dark rich looking veneer. Hence the dark side.
3. I know some of you liked my Frugal Horns but not in the light wood finishes. So perhaps these are more to your liking
Even though these are budget drivers – W6 costs around 19.00 EUR each and the T3 around £18.50 + VAT each - from what I have heard to date from this combination of driver they will seriously embarrass many a more expensive combination of 1” silk dome tweeter and 6½” paper coned woofer. Even though I am still waiting on the XO components, with both drivers wired direct to the speaker posts and a simple inline 6.8uF cap to the tweeter I was suitably impressed with their performance to go ahead and veneer the cabinets in the rather tasty Santos veneer that I managed to get a full bundle of at very reasonable cost. This simple XO works (to a large extent) as these drivers have a fairly wide crossover frequency bandwidth to play with. However, in reality a properly designed XO circuit is the order of the day and as advised by Scott I shall be using the design borrowed from a Blue Planet acoustic design. See attachment below.
One speaker is now finished with the other just needing its skin of veneer. And of course the installation of the XO whenever Falcon Acoustics get around to winding the inductors!
Just need to design and make up some bespoke stands for them.
Should anyone be interested I could offer these as either a full build with veneer of your choice or as fdlat-pack kit in 18mm Baltic Birch Ply.
