Saw the new Ken Loach yesterday, Sorry We Missed You. Not for the feint hearted as it's a grim and harrowing story. Perhaps not quite as good for me as I, Daniel Blake, but harder hitting and more thought provoking. Loach really does make extraordinary films.

If you can stomach the dark and depressing story, there are some powerful performances from the four central characters, all of whom are new to me.

Haven't seen Doctor Sleep yet Marco (Monday), so easy on the spoilers

    Ain't none there!

    But, TRUST ME, it's fab!

I found it 'added to the occasion' watching the original first, the previous night, as the whole thing just gels better that way

Haha, you daftee. I know you haven't dropped any spoilers yet, but this made me think we were about to get a much fuller run down, which might have, hence the hint

I'm really looking forward to it. I did book a ticket for Thursday morning, but checked on the numbers going and cancelled it last minute. Deffo going next week, Monday hopefully and having just seen The Shining again, it'll slot in nicely.

Lol - no worries... It was quite different from what I was expecting and there were a number of standout performances from the leading characters. Quite a long film, though! Anyway, hope you enjoy it, dude

Well unfortunately it didn't work for me Marco. I was bored by 30-minutes and seriously considered walking out after an hour but stuck it through, thinking it must get better soon, which for me it didn't. I guess I was expecting The Shining II, which it isn't and it's not a patch on Kubrick's original film. Predictable jump scare horrors send me to sleep and this had too many moments like that.

Marginally better than a trip to the dentist.

However, the day was not lost as I saw an advanced screening of Le Mans '66 last night. Now that I did enjoy, fantastic film and my new best of 2019. Outstanding in every way, with two cracking performance's from Matt Damon and Christian Bale. I'll be seeing that again when it gets released.

Shows you how differently things like films (and music) can grab you, or not!

Initially, I was like you and was expecting 'The Shining II', and thinking what is it all about... But then I 'got' the connection and enjoyed how the whole aspect of 'the shine' becoming central to the story this time, rather than a guy losing his mind in a 'haunted hotel', and in that respect I thought Ewan McGregor was superb, as Danny Torrance, same goes for the little girl (with the 'shine'), who I thought was equally as good, including also the leading 'enemy' Rose the Hat.

I thought they all played their part really well, and I loved how it all went back again to the Overlook hotel, where Danny used the 'evil spirits' there to help him defeat his enemy. All good stuff, huge fun and very entertaining, which is what gets me off with a good film. I don't really do 'deep and meaningful'...

Dr Sleep also gets pretty decent reviews from the critics, but as ever these things are ultimately always down to personal taste

Absolutely... Basically, in simple terms, it boils down to what 'appeals to your nut': some stuff does, and other stuff doesn't - and neither needs 'justifying'

For me though, and I don't include Tim in this, when it comes to films (and even music) some folk overthink the experience, by intellectualising it too much and forgetting that watching movies (or listening to music) is supposed to be FUN, not an academic exercise or an opportunity to show how 'clever' you are!

Applying 'geekery' to music or films totally turns me off...

That's why, for me, any films that try to be too clever or 'arty' for their own good, involving complicated plots and too many twists and turns, so that you lose track of what's happening and have to concentrate hard in order to follow the storyline, or worse, decipher what the whole thing is *actually about*, are an epic fail, as I become bored, not entertained!

Therefore that's why with films, I enjoy some light 'disposable froth', which preferably is over and done with in less than 2 hours, especially in a cinema, as any longer than that and I get twitchy!
