Yups, he also liked that one of yours I used to use as a centre speaker - you know with both drivers in a horizontal array with the tweeter in between them on top? What was the model again?
Cheers, mate. I was at that for over two hours! Previously it had been caked in about 2 inches of dust and all sorts of 'ingrained' fingerprints, as the acid from your fingers and hands stains copper, so LOTS of rubbing and polishing was needed! It'll be maintained that way nowGlad you're happy with them Marco. I remember reading lots of recommendations for them, but was always (unduly it seems) a bit afraid of trouble with the tweeter. Have you established whats in the x-over yet? If it's the same cap as the XR's we could just swap them (crazy expensive Jantzens?). I think I've got some suitable Mundorf E-Caps in my spares draw or I'm sure I saw Andy had some Clarity caps going for a song to keep your XR's running.
Holy moly your Copper Amp looks good
Yeah, I'm really delighted with these 15s. Honestly, Darren, you'll know exactly what I mean when you hear them. The midrange and top-end is in a different league from the XRs, even recapped with those lovely Jentzens. It's just much more open, lucid and communicative, and bizarrely too, the bass subjectively seems fuller, but also tighter, more tuneful, and with greater 'snap' and transient attack.
Just as big a difference, however, is their superior sensitivity of 90db, compared with (I think) the 87db of the XRs. And that 3db makes a MASSIVE difference to the intelligibility of vocals and the ability of the speakers to fill the room effortlessly with a big (for their size) sound.
Rather crucially, what that means, in terms of your fears over the tweeters, is that you simply don't have to turn up the volume very much before the sound becomes palpably loud. There's none of that 'chasing dynamics' or crispness, required from turning up the volume before you (falsely) achieve it and feel that the sound has the requisite clarity or 'physicality', if you know what I mean, in the way that's often necessary when using less efficient designs.
Therefore, you'd REALLY need to be a headbanger and/or use these speakers with a weedy amp, or just simply be stupidly careless, in order to blow the tweeters, so in the real world, or unless you're a careless clown, their reputation for 'blowing easily' needs rather closer scrutiny. If used responsibly, there are no issues.
Soncially too, the HF1300s are a FAR superior design to the soft-dome units used in the XRs - just no comparison really... The former simply render the latter as boxy, somewhat opaque sounding entities, lacking in genuine sparkle and extension. The levels of insight the HF1300s [in conjunction with the vintage mid/bass units] allow into recordings, and the subtle nuances they're able to tease out of even the densest of mixes, is simply a joy to behold!
I've not been inside them yet mate, as I've just been too busy listening to music or movies through them to bother, but when we're out of lockdown [hopefully soon] perhaps you could pop round and if they're the same, swap over the caps? Who knows though, the originals may still sound best... At least it won't cost anything to try if the values are the same
Marco.
