Lol...I've heard lots of folk here go on about that, but it simply didn't happen when I was young, as my parents were early adopters of double glazing, which we had installed throughout the house sometime in the early 70s (I think), from Everest. You're the expert in that area, so can confirm if Everest were around at that time or not, but I'm pretty sure they were

Similarly, when was central heating available in homes? Folks go on about freezing cold bedrooms and ice on their windows when they were kids, yet all I can remember is being toasty and warm - in or out of bed! Seem to remember I also always had an electric blanket, for when it got really cold.

Central heating etc had arrived by then for many. It was a great rarity when I was young. And I'm not that old.
Yes everest were around. Sure they did ours or quoted for it.
As we had lovely sash windows with leaded top panes we got secondary glazing so we could keep it. It wasn't as good as hoped tho.
Early days of such things I guess

No worries, thanks for the confirmation. My parent's house was just a simple 1960s-built semi-detached, nothing fancy. I've shown you pics, if you remember?

So no nice original features like your place.

It might've been different before I was born when my parents moved in, as I doubt there would've been double glazing or central heating installed then, but defo when I was a kid. My dad, the only breadwinner at the time, was the type who would've worked hard enough to ensure that the house was warm/draught-free and not damp for his family - and that would've been a No1 priority before anything else, other than putting food on the table.

    Stingy or mean he wasn't!

Think it was late 60's to very early 70's we got them in, tho not both at once. Think glazing was first.
My house on same street along Rd had coal up to a Yr before we had to move due to wife being so disabled.
Was a great house but had access issues. Bathroom was huge.

No doubt you had lots of friends calling round during the winter months, who mysteriously had other places to be come springtime - on our estate you would have been known as "that posh kid" I know we didn't have double glazing, the council used to have painters put a big shed on the green every four years and painted everyone's doors and windows.

I think it would have been late sixties/early seventies when Everest started advertising their windows. Farmer Ted Moult used to demonstrate their draughtproofing qualities with a feather, with a feather, and to emphasise their strength he stand behind one while someone swung a 100lb bag of dead sheep at it, which unfortunately never broke through to take his head off. "You only fit double glazing once, so fit the best - fit Everest". Bollocks, I've fitted it loads of times, but not Everest, their stuff is weird and madly overpriced

    Soz, missed this

Yeah, that's the advert I remember for Everest, now you've jogged my memory! It would've been early 70s when I remember the 'man from Everest' calling and doing his thing. Posh kid? Depends what you mean by that...

Double glazing? Tick. Central heating. Tick. TV and all electrical kitchen appliances owned and paid for. Tick. Indoor toilet, Tick - even back then I could manage huge plops, so the 'flushing power' of an indoor loo would've been mandatory!

Council house? Untick. Never lived in a council house in my life.

We found a great farm selling local Christmas trees a couple of villages away. Sue splashed out on some new decorations to compliment our new countryside location as well as some of the old favourites.

Also went and ordered the turkey and other locally sourced meat from the village farm shop, Hog & Hen. Good deal on a package which should give us everything we need for the big day and more.
