Yeah, I can believe that, lol! Insular, thick feckers... It was a really nice night, and quite different from the more formal affairs I've attended in the past. The feeling of a close community spirit in these little village pubs is palpable, warm and friendly, and so different from the soulless and impersonal nature of chain establishments, which I utterly detest.

Superb food (both in terms of quality and value), a great selection of beers/local ales, all enjoyed in a convivial atmosphere... What more could you want?

What's a "rye"? Otherwise, I love your glass -particularly the base! Is it silver? No doubt the whisky inside is good, too

Rye whiskey has a mash bill of at very minimum 51% rye cereal in it. That would be called barely legal lol. Some have 100%.
Its quite spicy stuff. They are starting to put a bit of rye in other whisky now I hear,..

Glass is pewter based. Nice and heavy.

Yes it was, though being a restaurant I paid nearly double that. However it wasn't the cheapest wine on the list; which is an embarrassment of riches, with several bottles costing €1,000 or more.

Nuits-Saint-Georges, however is fabulous, although Gevrey-Chambertin is where it's *really* at with red Burgundy. However prices, especially of the best vintages, can be eye-watering!

Pommard and Savigny-lès-Beaune can offer decent value with Burgundy, but the use of Pinot Noir will mean quite a different style of wine than you're used to from Bordeaux!

Chinon and Saumur-Champigny are also beautiful red wines from the Loire Valley

Yes of course - a 'senior moment' on my behalf.

    Friday is whisky night..

Fettercairn Fasque.. Distillery just at foothills of cairngorm range around Laurencekirk.

It's been going for nearly 200 years so they know a thing or 2.

The fasque is very nice.. Quite rich, smooth with decent finish.
Not sure what this cost as it was some time ago, but time to drink..
    Lovely stuff, and worth finding..

Maybe a bit of coffee and vanilla in there too.

Smooth as hell. I couldn't believe it yesterday as they were giving it away at £4.95 a bottle. Insane.

Its not that complex but it needs to be warm to get the flavours out. If slightly cold it is a bit bland.

That doesn't sound too positive but it is really nice stuff. Their wines just aren't that complex as a rule.
