My Dad introduced me to Alma Cogan's music. This is one of her LPs from the early 60s when she was trying to move away from the novelty songs she was not far in the 1950s. Classy stuff. Apple Lossless CD rip.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".
“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”
"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”
“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

I have cheated a little as the CD it came from is a (beautifully remastered) compilation on Music for Pleasure of her two Columbia albums. I like to rip a 'twofer', split it into its original LPs and then scrounge the cover art off the internet! Copies of these albums on original vinyl seem to be rarer than rocking-horse doo-doo.
Final track on this album is (I think) the best version of Noel Coward's If Love Were All. Her final, posthumous album has a clutch of incredible Beatles-covers from when the songs were pretty much freshly minted.

Alma Cogan was so talented. I loved her when I was a youngster. She had a tremendous vivacity, a great voice and sang very appealingly.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!
I think it's still available on CD (as 'With Love in Mind') or they crop up on eBay and Amazon sellers at least. There was an MFP double LP version as well, but to me (nerdy collector) it doesn't have the same romance if it's not on the original label. The original album didn't sell well as EMI didn't know what to do with a serious Alma Cogan perhaps thinking she was encroaching on Shirley Bassey territory, hence I've not been able to find the Columbia LPs.

This brings back memories. Anybody remember Helen Shapiro and Susan Maughan from around the same time?
(Susan Maughan was cute. She's 77 now. Blimey!)
