Junior minister Douglas Ross has resigned after Dominic Cummings' defence of his trip to County Durham during the coronavirus lockdown.

Mr Ross, Under Secretary of State for Scotland, said the senior aide's view of the government guidance was "not shared by the vast majority of people".

Mr Cummings has explained why he drove 260 miles in March from his home to his parents' farm with his wife and child.

No 10 said the prime minister regretted Mr Ross' decision to stand down.

In a statement announcing his resignation, Mr Ross, who remains Tory MP for Moray, said: "While the intentions may have been well meaning, the reaction to this news shows that Mr Cummings interpretation of the government advice was not shared by the vast majority of people who have done as the government asked."

"I have constituents who didn't get to say goodbye to loved ones; families who could not mourn together; people who didn't visit sick relatives because they followed the guidance of the government.

"I cannot in good faith tell them they were all wrong and one senior adviser to the government was right."

A No 10 spokesman said: "The prime minister would like to thank Douglas Ross for his service to government and regrets his decision to stand down as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Scotland."

Lol - no, nothing that grand, although I did (still do, as I still dabble in it occasionally) have some multi-millionaire private and corporate clients. I'm pretty much retired now though, which is why I have my 'property empire' to keep me busy!

COVID-19, in due course, will most likely 'peter out', as other viruses have done in the past. You can see it happening already. Yes, there may be a second wave, but now that we know more about what we're dealing with, we should be better prepared, in terms of being able to ISOLATE (crucial in the early stages) and contain it.
I think we probably agree on several points: crucially that a vaccine may never be developed, and therefore humanity needs to finds ways of living as safely and normally as possible in its absence. Where we differ fundamentally is on the conspiracy theory stuff. To me, all the evidence points to (multiple) cock-ups, starting with the Chinese government's initial denial that COVID existed at all. That was IMO about 'saving face' rather than some dastardly plot to overthrow the West. Similarly, the UK government's decision to abandon track and trace was probably due to complacency (eg because SARS had almost zero impact here) rather than because they wanted lots of people to become infected so they could impose lockdown.

With HIV, there is as you say no vaccine, but medical science didn't therefore say 'oh, well, we might as well give up and let people die'; instead they worked on treatments that meant that deaths from HIV/AIDS have fallen dramatically from the peak year of 2004:

    https://www.unaids.org/en/resources/fact-sheet

    'AIDS-related deaths

AIDS-related deaths have been reduced by more than 56% since the peak in 2004.

    In 2018, around 770 000 [570 000–1.1 million] people died from AIDS-related illnesses worldwide, compared to 1.7 million [1.3 million–2.4 million] in 2004 and 1.2 million [860 000–1.6 million] in 2010.

AIDS-related mortality has declined by 33% since 2010.'

HIV is treated with anti-viral drugs, which may be an effective way of containing COVID if a vaccine does not emerge, and will probably be better than just hoping that enough people develop immunity to minimise the impact of a second wave. If a second wave does happen, it will probably come in the autumn/winter, when more people fall ill anyway, and when hospital beds are already nearly full. We were 'lucky' that the first wave hit us in Spring, and we hopefully have several months to build capacity and re-stock on PPE.

In the meantime, governments around the world emerging from lockdown are having to learn as they go along from the mistakes and successes of other countries. What is clear is that those countries which a) rigorously tracked and traced infected people from the outset and b) locked down quickly and thoroughly have had fewer cases and a much lower death rate than countries such as the UK and the US which have essentially just bumbled along.

    While watching the live news update yesterday, all i could think of was this;

It's become known in our house as the 'Pre-dinner pantomime act'! And always good value, for all the WRONG reasons...

Some good points there, Joe. By jove, I do believe we *may* actually agree on something!!

I shall reply later. Got a busy day ahead in the garden, planting seeds (both veg and flower) and assembling some garden furniture we've bought. Laters.
