    Welcome back Steve!

(BTW, when you were in Bulgaria, did you see people shaking their head for "yes" and nod for "no"?)

Thanks Barry We went for a day out round Sozopol (lots of interesting history there, most of which I've now forgotten), and the guide told us about the shaking head thing - if a vendor asks if you want sugar in your coffee and you shake your head, the result will probably be undrinkable!

Another little nugget of information he passed on; Bulgaria has the fastest-shrinking population in the world, and if it continues at it's current rate they'll be extinct by the end of the century, so get pictures of them while you can (I think he was joking with the last bit).

I could live in Sozopol - old town only about half a mile by 200 yards wide, but has TWO record shops. One of them owned by a very nice bloke whom I have bought from in the past, from his other shop in Nessebar.

They do the same in Albania. I didn't believe it until until I saw it done.

God bless 'em all. Bulgaria is reported to be the poorest nation in the EU, but it's not for want of trying as far as I can see.

Whenever we eat out or stop for a drink, there's always a debate with Anita about how much to tip - she says I tip too much. But when dining out is relatively cheap a reasonable tip won't break the bank.

What really bugged me was at the end of that Sozopol trip, after the driver and guide had sweated through eight hours of keeping us happy, not one of the 30-odd passengers left them a tip. And you know they really don't get paid much

If they could afford the trip, they could afford a couple of quid or so for a tip.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Well it was a return coach trip, a one hour boat trip around the coast, a visit to Ravadinovo Castle (normal admission about 12 quid) and a four-course meal in a seafood restaurant. All or about 55 of our English pounds.

The castle, less than 30 years old, built by an ex-professional wrestler who might just be a bit mental.

Back on topic, first record I bought was Shakin Stevens, can't remember which, and it was a tape. Around 1982 I believe. Not exactly a classic.
