The downside otherwise is that the earth will only function optimally when the soil is wet, which of course means continually keeping it so! Or simply accepting that your system's performance will vary depending on whether or not it rains (as mains impedance lowers with a more conductive earth)..... And yes, I've tested for that too!

When it rains and the soil is at its wettest, the impedance on the dedicated mains radial for my system [which the earth is connected to] goes down (as measured by my electrician), and conversely goes up when the soil is dry - and my system noticeably sounds best when the soil is soaking wet.

So what's happening there then?

The return path is the 'ether' to use an old fashioned word.
Imagine how radio communications work on an aircraft for example. No 'return path' there.

Hi Marco, your electrician will be measuring the earth fault loop impedance, on a TT earthing system (where safety earth is provided by a ground rod) the better the soil conductivity the lower the impedance. This test is conducted between Live and Earth. Mains impedance is tested between Live and Neutral, this will not be altered by soil conditions.

So are we back to thinking that these grounding boxes and cables are acting as an aerial/antenna? But somehow instead of feeding the “signal” into the Hifi there is something in the box providing a better path?
