Anyway, I’ve decided I’m a Speyside man, not keen on peaty whiskies or anything with a medicinal hint, and my favourite slurp is the bog standard Tamnavulin - I’ve tried their sherry and red wine casket editions but still prefer the normal double cask version.

I’d like to try something a bit more upmarket, but don’t want to spend a shed load of dosh and it not be in the same style. Any recommendations?
try some bourbon casked stuff if you dont want sherry.

the benriach is from a mix of sherry casks, bourbon casks and Port casks!

all 3 are super. no smoke etc.. 3 of my staples if im not after heavy sherry.

if you want a sherry treat then look no further than this. not cheap but boy its full of the stuff..yum.

a treat in the bourbon cask side at a great price is this 18 yr old.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

Just back from Lidl, and a heads up for (I guess mainly Robin)... They've got a superb Gigondas in just now, for a silly-cheap £14.99: https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/the-french-...h-morny/p44208

Think of it as a 'poor man's' Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but it won't be very 'poor'!

Utter bargain for a wine that could easily cost double that in a 'fancy' wine shop. I'd pop along ASAP, and grab some if you can!

And for your good lady, a rather nice Muscadet Sevre et Maine: https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/the-french-...t-maine/p44215

Lovely wine that, chilled, either as an aperitif or with some seafood pasta or risotto!

    Marco.
Fliss is back at work (three days a week), so I am trying to make some pleasant meals.

Popped in to Lidl today and along with some of their Scotch beef burgers bought a bottle of the Puech Morny - my word, it stands up well with the BBQ'd burger, will have to buy a few more bottles

(I also made a Feta, toasted walnut, Fig and mixed leaf salad - whole grain mustard/olive oil and basalmic dressing to go on it. Unfortunately no photographs, so won't go in the dinner thread).

Just threw a couple of logs on the Kadai, so I will be back outside later watching the flames and nursing the rest of the bottle - thanks for highlighting it Marco, nice one Lidl

Sorry, Guy, missed this... Nice one! Glad the Gigondas hit the spot. It's a lovely wine for the money, and how you paired it sounds good

Robin, did you manage to find some?

We're just back again from Lidl, and I picked up a rather nice Pouilly-Fumé for £11.99: https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/the-french-...ly-fume/p44223

Not had it yet, but I think your good lady would love it. You can certainly pay double that, or more, for a quality Pouilly-Fumé, as it's one of the celebrated white Burgundy varieties, although this is from the Loire. If this hits the spot, it'll be another Billy Bargain from Lidl!
