This Chilean Merlot is currently on offer in Asda, £7 down to £5 a bottle then 25% off if you buy 6 bottles - £3.75 a bottle!

Not had it before but must be better than my usual sheep dip.

Getting some delivered tomorrow (if they haven't sold out at that price!).

Hope it hits the spot, Roy - and at that price it's a Billy Bargain

Although, don't neglect the Merlot from Aldi.

Just back this time from Lidl, and picked up a few nice bits for Xmas:

Salted Caramel 'Baileys' for a mere £7.99: https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/p/stock-up...liqueur/p27449

    Gorgeous with some ice!

Next up, 6 rather nice Belgian beers, for £10.99 (can't find a direct link):

A rather interesting Vino Spumante, as an alternative to Prosecco, for a mere £6.99: https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/p/the-wint...pumante/p27077

I've got a feeling that will hit the spot nicely, chilled as an aperitif!

And a couple of quality table wines.... First up a rather lovely Pinot Blanc, from Alsace. Unfortunately, I can't find an exact link to this specific wine, but it's definitely from Lidl, and priced at £7.99:

Wines from the Alsace region of France can be stunning and quite unique, and I have high hopes for this one!

And lastly a rather intriguing Sicilian Red, Passo Mastro, which I haven't had before, but should be a full-bodied, big-boned stonker, and fantastic value at £6.99: https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/p/the-wint...-mastro/p27076

I do enjoy Aberlour... My kind of flavour, and always solid and consistent

Returning to wine, it's that time of year again... This year's Beaujolais Nouveau has arrived. We'll see what the 2019 vintage is like, and I will be ordering a case later from my usual source: https://www.tanners-wines.co.uk/beau...n-et-fils-2019

If you like young, fresh and vibrant, and oh-so-fruity reds, which can even be enjoyed cold (not chilled), then there's really nothing like it!

Haven't had Beaujolais Nouveau in years - 20+ I reckon, never really liked lighter, fruity wines but should give it a go I reckon as my taste may have changed.

Yes unfortunately it's gone out of fashion lately, so difficult to source now, other than from specialist wine shops. And when it was 'fashionable', the quality was often rather variable, with some of it being quite poor.

The difference with the likes of Tanners though, is that they send their wine representatives over to selected vineyards in France (where they're built up a good rapport with the growers), and each year the wine (Beaujolais Nouveau) is assessed for quality. If it doesn't come up to scratch, then it's rejected and they don't import any.

Fortunately that hasn't happened since I've been a customer, as the suppliers they use have a great record for producing top-quality wines. It also means that, with being subject to such a stringent selection process, unlike before where BN was stocked by every 'Tom. Dick and Harry', simply because it was fashionable (think around the mid 80s), you *know* it's going to be good, or at least worth drinking!

Like you say though, BN is the POLAR OPPOSITE of the type of wine you normally drink, especially the likes of a Rioja Gran Reserva!

It's much lighter and fruitier, but good examples (such as Tanners sell) are jam-packed full of bright berry-fruits, so it's like having a glass of freshly-pressed alcoholic blackcurrants in your glass (and the perfumed aroma is just fantastic), as is the deep purple-red colour of the wine, and the flavour of the grapes just lingers in your mouth with every sip!

Done well, it's gorgeous stuff - *IF* you appreciate that style of wine, which MUST be accompanied with food (think all types of charcuterie, especially saucisson sec/salami, and Brie or Camembert cheese), in order to be fully appreciated (served at UK-winter room temperature or under), and not glugged on its own!!

As you're a cheese lover mate, you might just love it, if your palate has changed, so why not give it a go? You can order it directly from Tanners, via the link I posted above [a very classy and professional, old-school vintners, which I can't recommend highly enough]. You simply won't find a better example of the breed, trust me!

I think I'm sold, especially with cheese! Worst case scenario, it's still alcoholic!

Just been out to pick up the Christmas Whisky (treat to myself). Haven’t tried either of these but have liked everything else they’ve done that I have tried.
