Hi all,
I didn't expect this happen, but I'm selling my Pioneer CS-77A Speakers.
The recent acquisition of some new speakers, coupled with a lack of space and a dwindling budget means that even though I'm unlikely to ever find another pair in this condition, I have to sell them on.
I've had them for a long time, in comparison to my box swapping nature. Possibly 2 years now, and they have seen off multiple attempts to beat them. Frugal horns, Quad 57's, Mission 774s, Mission 710s plus more.
The only speakers to come close IMHO, all cost well over £1k in used condition. This has again proved true with the Mordaunt Short Performance 880s I've just picked up and considering the RRP of those (£3k) when new, it's testament to the Japanese standard bearers that these Pioneers have aged so wonderfully.
When I got them, they were beat up. The cabinets were shockingly worn looking and with mould on the outside, they'd obviously suffered some exposure to water.
I spent time, money and effort restoring the cabinets to a condition that is beyond that of any pair I've seen since (4 pairs total)
The two tweeters had no foam and the two mids didn't work. Walpurgis, repaired the tweeters and I ordered a matching pair of mids from the USA. Not cheap!
I checked the crossovers and everything was A- OK so I decided not to mess with them.
The result has been a speaker which has consistently defied its stereotypes. Great imaging and depth. Wide sou d stage and most importantly, I discovered recently that by switching the Super tweeters on, the response is now incredibly balance. Removing any notion that the mids were slightly coloured.
Tonally, the 880s and the CS-77A are very similar so I must have hit the nail on the head when I read the manual lol.
Upgraded binding posts on the rear, real 4 way speaker design and 12" bass driver means they go very low for a sealed cab design. In a recent test I got to an audible 32hz. Pretty awesome I have to say.
I'd like to recoup what I spent on them, you can have the labour for free. It was a pleasure to own these beautiful speakers.
I have two bass drivers spare, which I'll include for free. There may be some super tweeters too but I'll have to double check.
Due to weight, they have to be collection only.
I was going to price them at £300 but to help with petrol costs, I'll let them go to an AoS member for £275.
No price drops, no offers. This is giving them away.
If any of those guys who've heard them would like to comment on the performance, feel free.
