Since I hit 62 I've lost count of the number of ways people act like I'm old and decrepit. Apart from ear and nose hair, the grunting when I bend to pick stuff up, the forgetting to cancel indicators, shouting at the telly, a tendency to wear beige, and general grumpiness, I'm no different to any 21 year old

Is that what it's like when you're old? The most worrying thing there is thought of wearing beige!

No, what's really worrying is holding up your dad as an example of how it will be in old age (all credit to him), and assuming it's genetic. You are aware these things skip a generation aren't you?

Lol - my uncles are the same, as was my mum (plus all of her side) - all fit and in full possession of their 'faculties' well into their dotage! I'm fit and healthy at my age now, and look and feel at least 10 years younger, so it's going ok so far... Of course anything can happen in future, and won't count my chickens.

My mum had a major stroke at 58, and died at 63, one year older than I am, while my dad is still working at 81, only because he likes to work and has no hobbies. I'm expecting I'll peg it somewhere between the two.

Lol... You've obviously got a strong constitution and are very resilient, so if you'd been more careful when you were younger and looked after yourself better/been less reckless, you'd have probably gone onto live until a ripe old age! You might still do

It's a true saying though, in that what you do (to your body) when you're young, pays you back when you're older... And that's one of the reasons I'm still in reasonable nick (no bad falls/injuries, when I was younger - always ate well, got plenty of exercise and didn't smoke, or drink to excess).

I've no regrets about what I did to my body, nor how much stuff my body did to the laydees' bodies. We can spend our younger years doing the 'right thing' for our bodies, only to have fate shit on us from a great height (although in most cases it won't). So I don't waste any of my time worrying about it. When I'm gone I'm gone, and you're welcome to say "I told you so", but I won't hear you, due to the deadness.

Good on him if that's what keeps him happy, although it's a mindset I simply can't relate to, nor my dad, who retired at 66 (through choice from his own business) and couldn't wait to enjoy, not only his hobbies more fully (gardening, air-rifle shooting, DIY, carpentry), but spending more time with my mum and going on nice holidays together, out for meals, and just generally being closer as a married couple.

Maybe it would've been different had your mum still been alive? Anyway, I wish him a long and healthy (as possible) life

If you can make a bit of money doing what you enjoy, that sounds like a good deal to me Also I think going out and working gives him a sense of purpose, which can only be a good thing. I don't think work itself is what knackers you up, it's the stress. And he certainly ain't stressed
