It's what people from Liverpool call people from the rest of Lancashire (except for Manchester, they're Mancs).
At school they would bus them in on the 'woolly express' from places like Great Sankey (as weird as it sounds) and Skem. Obviously their accent was very different, so they stood out a bit.

I don't know how old the term is but I'd guess it goes back to the middle-ages when Lancashire was full of sheep farms. Liverpool was all about ships and docks so a fairly marked difference from the territory immediately around it. And there is no Liverpool word for anyone beyond Lancashire. Which implies that it must at least pre-date the railways.

Never been to Shrewsbury, but we'll give it a go for next Christmas shopping trip - time for a change.Hi Steve,
I completely agree about soulless town centres and independent shops. Chester is definitely a disappointment, in that respect, as it's too touristy, and so full of too many 'chain retailers'.
There are some notable exceptions, and as you mention Christmas shopping, there's a lovely little gift shop in Chester we go to called Liberty Bell, see here: http://www.liberty-bell.co.uk/
It's great for finding unusual little gift items, especially bespoke Christmas decorations and candles
Next time try Shrewsbury, if you like individual shops - it's far better than Chester.
