Been in a few pretty fast unmapped diesels. I owned a fairly fast one that could hold its own with any petrol eq. It was pretty clean, got great mileage etc, and although decently big estate could if driven properly get over 50mph. My brothers small diesel got 66mph and was fairly nippy. This govt anti diesel crap will fall eventually when it becomes it or them.
As for battery cars..jeez, gimme a break. They are even bigger pollutants . Energy costs to make and break are staggering

As an aside when it comes to miles driven, I remember being berated on another forum a couple of years back for driving a "horrible, polluting, gas-guzzling Range Rover" by someone who went on to say how wonderful his small engined car was, and how he had done 40,000 miles in it last year. When I pointed out that his 40,000 miles at 50mpg still used far more fuel than my annual mileage of 8000 at 18mpg, and queried if this adjusted his position on which one of us was the bigger polluter, he went remarkably quiet...

that is reason i think the road tax should be scrapped and tax be on fuel, so the bigger polluters pay most. only fair imv. rich folk wont agree i guess but is it fair i get charged well over £200 for a fairly modern petrol car that does about 1800 miles a year and others burn gas like its going out of fashion, do 40k a year and pay pennies.

The difference with diesel engines is the particulates they output are very small and cannot be effectively filtered by the lungs. As a consequence they are far more hazardous to health than emissions from a petrol engine. To effectively filter them will massively reduce the performance of the engine, which is why the car manufacturers were lying about their emissions figures, something that has now brought the whole matter to a head.

There is unlikely to be a blanket ban on any type of engine however I think it is very likely that production of diesel engine cars will cease entirely within the next ten years.

Less likely now with things going electric. How would you tax that? You could do it at service stations, but what about home charging, which is available now? It would be very unpopular to insist on separate metering.

its all pretty pointless globally anyway with the us still averaging v6 2.5 litre engines. they are changing but as fuel is discounted its not gonna make a lot of difference. add in their dirty power plants, then take China...please

To be honest, these days I'd resent paying for the juice that a "V6 2.5 litre engine" would use, not to mention the excessive road tax (and no doubt insurance).

Yups... And besides, how exactly do you define a "performance car'? Does it have to be a Ferrari, McLaren or what...?

The Brabster's recently been through the dyno of my engine specialist [I hesitate to refer to him simply as a 'mechanic', because his expertise extends well beyond that] and measured just under 310bhp, with 510Nm of torque. Trust me, when you 'floor it', it SHIFTS!!

Of course, it's not the fastest thing on the road, but it was never bought, or designed for such a purpose. However, I've still managed to roast a few 'petrolheads' in 'performance cars', who, much like the rather misinformed Mr 'argyle', think that I'm just driving a glorified taxi!
