The U bend in question is a three-way coupling, connecting both the kitchen sink plug hole and the washing machine water outlet to the drain. The 'sludge' that had accumulated was affecting both the kitchen sink and the washing machine, but since a filter sieve is used with the sink, I can only assume the blockage was caused by detritus not being properly flushed away from the washing machine. Obviously I was not particularly interested in analysing the exact nature of the sludge at the time, and only considered the matter later.

Whatever the shortcomings of the plumbing arrangement used, it is a straightforward, if not especially pleasant, matter to sort out the problem when it arises - which, fortunately, is infrequent.

Lol.... Indeed. Our washing machine is located in an out house, not in the kitchen, and therefore not part of the same 'plumbing network' as the sink. We've never had any blocked pipes, perhaps partly because of that, but mainly because we don't flush anything down the sink (or toilet) that's liable to cause a blockage.
And for that reason, we've never needed to use caustic soda, or any other chemicals, to address said issue.
However it does appear that your (or Happy's ?) washing machine is not doing its job properly, perhaps because the 'fluff filter' incorporated is blocked/needs replaced, as what's happening, however infrequently it may be, shouldn't be happening.
