That old fruit box was brand new in 2016 and set me back £6.5k. I love the soumd of the Linn, wanted one for over 25 years, it may be old hat but I just love the sound.

That being said there's something very special about a SL which I still think can't be beaten. I've got a large collection of 78's and 7” 45's as well 12” singles and except the 78's it's not the same playing them on a Linn.

Detachable headshell is a huge bonus onvoisly and it also looks a million dollars worth!

Anyway, and this is a very serious point, if you get the Techy, I'd enjoy and get to know it 'as is' for a few months, then do two very important things to it, which if necessary are reversible, if you want to eliminate two MASSIVELY limiting factors:

1) Fit a decent mat, such as an Achromat, as what comes as standard simply isn't fit for hi-fi purposes.

2) Replace the tonearm (which will easily come off, and can be put back later if necessary, returning the T/T to stock) with something like a Jelco SA-750 (thus retaining the convenience of a detachable headshell), and be careful with cartridge choice, no matter which arm you use, even the stock one.

Trust me, the tonearm change will remove a major bottleneck and launch the T/T into an entirely different sonic league!

As a result of some research I have been doing I have recently built an LP12 bitsa to achieve a 1980s type build in an early plinth. I am pleased with the sound it produces but there is definitely a quality to the bass which I believe is the "bloom" that people refer to.

I also have a mid 90s build with Cirkus, Lingo, Trampoline, Ekos. I am running an AT-F7 cartridge. I have the same cartridge on a Sony PS-X600 biotracer and tonally I would struggle to distinguish them apart with none of the bloom. Given Andrew has the Kore sub chassis on a modern build then I would think it will also be likely that his deck is fairly neutral from that perspective. The modern springs also are quite stable and the sound does not change over time or go off that I have noticed.

This is a Technics sub forum and I don't have direct experience of the 1210 to comment on that deck. I do have the relatively cheap SL D202 and SL Q202 which on paper have the same spec as the 1210 but nowhere near the same build quality. For playing singles I actually prefer the fully automatic functions of the Sony so don't have to worry about cueing. I can have that deck on the floor quite close to where I am sitting and can just reach over to change records without getting up. It makes playing 45s a pleasure.

Well I spent a lot of time listening to a Linn during the nineties and got to love the sound. In 2009 I owned a stock SL1210 and have to be honest that if these mods really do transform the thing then that can only be a good thing.
I kept the 1210 for around six months. That was enough, however I appreciate that there is a massive difference in price between the two and I also appreciate that the difference in concept is also massive.
