What does Flat earth mean to you?

seriously though, i cant help but relate it to the human race's exceptance that the world was flat, and that if you went too far near the edge you would fall off! obviously that atitude quickly changed once the world had been explored properly! so, if we are going to refer to this flat earth slogan as an asset, please,,, those that know its true meaning explain it to us dafties.

I have always been a bit confused by waht it meant in terms of hifi, mostly based on my previous belife that it meant someone who was a bit stuck in the past! Since I have known more about hifi I had not realy thought that much about it, just asuming it meant something technical that I prob wouldn't understand!
Now this has come up, I'm not really that much clearer on it! Steve, marco, are you saying you are more firmly into hifi that is based on traditional priciples of good sound quality?
I am certainly confused!
Surely it is ok to just want a hifi that sounds good without needing to tie oneself into any specific genre of hifi owner?

I'll tell you a story :

Once I listened to a song through a average headphone with a low-fi (really low-fi) portable cassette player.
I was very impressed, kind of "arm hairs stand" as Steve says.

This resulted in a kind of "impregnation" (not sure about the word) of the -low- playing fidelity with the song : since then, I try to find these imperfections in the sound and I'm not satisfied when I listen to this song in a perfect system.

The term flat earth was originally used disparagingly by the more objectivist detractors but it was then adopted in a we're flat earthers and proud of it kind of way.

Indeed. I have no problem with 'subjectivist' (as a thoroughly non-techie arts graduate I can't be doing with graphs and specs) but 'Flat Earth' seems an unnecessary and confusing term.

Joe, you are pedantically picking holes. If the system is capable of giving you dewy eyes, making your hairs stand up etc./making your feet tap it is likely to put a grin on your face, no?

To me, the term implies someone who refuses to accept overwhelming scientific evidence and/or someone who is living irretrievably in the past.

This is not me. Moreover, I know nobody like this.

Although our past is irremediably part of us.
