Last Gig You Went To...

Shuggie Otis the other night at the KOKO Camden. Great gig, Shuggie on guitar, his son on Bass, brother on drums, sax/flute, and keyboard players. Great band all round. The sax player was outstanding, but it was Shuggies night, and boy can that man play.You could hear all those years of experience in just his fills when other members of the band were doing a solo. The man has influenced many, you could hear why.
Only downsides- the keyboard players Hammond sound, great musician, but the hammond sound not as good as it could have been, but that could just be me. The mrs though the keyboards sounded fine.
The venue was just right, small enough to feel intimate, but having a few levels meant you could get a fair few people in there. old style deco, very much like an old style music hall or cinema. Down side drink prices... up side great PA.
All in all, great night . A reclusive legendary guitarist who can still cut it, well more than cut it. slice it, chop it, blend it, with grin inducing solos, and fills, chin stroking moments whilst uttering how is he doing that type of gig.

Underworld at The Roundhouse on Friday. Had a great time. A tad disappointed they only played one song from the 1st album. I guess they have a new album to promote, however they were still very good indeed.

Prong at the Underworld in Camden last night.

Great set from a band I've followed since first being blown away by their powerful groovy metal as a 16 year old.

Surprise of the night was their support band 'steak number eight', supremely heavy and grungy rock, walls of distortion bass shaking the floors of the venue, and a performance with so much energy it was infectious. They won a lot of new fans on the strength of that show and got a fair old moshpit going. The singer/guitar player throwing himself amongst the crowd like the first time I saw Nirvana. Absolutely bloody great. Chatted to the band afterwards. Nice bunch of kids.

The incredible local act Velvoir playing at a pub last night.

They get better everytime I see them.

Some footage from one of their recent gigs. Seeing these youngsters playing great original music like this fills me with hope for the North East music scene and makes me proud.

Latest gig for me was The Coral at The Leadmill, Sheffield... The Leadmill was where I hung out back in the 90's and I saw The Coral there too amongst lots of other bands. What a superb band and their new album is simply mind blowing.

If you like spooky dark pop/psyche then The Coral are freaking amazing.

Yes, I'll be seeing the Coral later this year. They're playing a local festival, Velvoir are on the same bill.

A pulsating four-piece, Velvoir give you a very memorable experience with each member giving 150% to their performance. Even as they warm up, those in the crowd who have not yet heard them give a nod of approval and a ‘wow’ look on their faces as they realise something special may be about to happen. This has been the case on each of the five occasions I have saw them in recent months and Sunday was no different.

The hot and sweaty crowd were about to get even hotter as Velvoir made their way to the stage, with the bass-lines of Joe Fannan, driving drum beats from Billy White, fantastic guitar work by Adam Sams and the unforgettable Verity Jasmine Bee on vocals. They combine to transport you to another universe for an hour, playing original songs such as ‘Pearls On Velvet’ ‘Who’s the most Virile’ ‘Defenestrate’ and ‘Blow’. It’s hard to pin them down to a particular sound, but I hear elements of Frank Zappa, The Doors, King Crimson and Hawkwind with their own unique twist. Maybe the description by fan Andy Stephenson of: “Avant-garde Space-Rock Funk with a World Music edge” could be one to use. …I can’t recall seeing a bassist play in such a style since witnessing John Entwistle of The Who back in the year 2000 at Newcastle Arena. So much energy is put into the performance, the sweat is dripping off Joe and the rest of the band by the end. With cries of ‘more, more!’ the band agree to another song which builds up & up into a crescendo, as the singer is lying across the stage floor with similarities to a young Jim Morrison.

Never saw them, but heard of the Veggies. I was living in Sheffield in 1995, living in graveyard in brightside.
