Another hour, another upgrade!

First impressions of the 1"" gimp mat + tenuto platter mat are not good . I think the combination actually dampens the sound and reminds me of when I over dampened the 1210. I honestly didn't think that you could over dampen a garrard 301 but it looks like that's the case. I need more time listening tbh and with a greater genre of music. This looks like one avenue of improvement that has finally come to and end. I think I need to concentrate on motor decoupling and discrete vibration suppression. Ah well upwards and onwards.

Hmmmm the 301 has had a little ground loop hum every since I installed the Pheonix PSU. I've dismanted the 301 today and found a ?dry solder joint in the 3012 + Pheonix needed a small mod to add a grounding wire. So a little soldering and the Pheonix PSU lead now has a seperate ground wire. The 3012 will get sorted out tomorrow. And there ends another small job from the list of actually grounding the PSU. There is a small matter of £4K Matt , but if you have a spare plinth going on the cheap or better still, simply give me yours!. Sometimes things seems to go from bad to worse. The ground loop hum has been solved but it not looks like the 3012 is buggered for the time being, lost all output to left channel! Soldering iron needs to come out tomorrow.

The Nordost Tyr tonearm cable is going and is to be replaced by Yannis Tome 423.5 Phonolitz (Plus) tonearm cable not even my 1210 has one of these!

My 301 is now sitting lonely, it has no tonearm and no tonearm cable attached .

A couple of ideas for you from the Scalford show I spent a lot of time talking to a guy called Jay in the Lenco room who was running a modified 301, he made a separate motor pod from cast kitty litter which sat under his deck completely unattached to the main plinth which he claimed reduced vibrations put into the deck....certainly sounded good might be worth further investigation.

The other thing I saw was a platter mat made from a specially dampened steel by a company specialising in industrial noise/vibration control called S.D.S the demos looked interesting for the platter mat and I might try to get one myself

ive seen jays thread over on lenco heaven, I was planning something similar. The SDS platter mat is something I've seen and tried I preferred the tenuto.

The 301 is going to at some point have a new plinth built. Now, do I wait and wait for a Bentonite based one to crop up or do I try Panzerholz? The cost of a custom made Bentonite is large (several thousand). I'm going to have to make a few phone calls next week and get some prices for Panzerholz and them have a word with maybe Russ Collinson to create something for me. I'll probably get a decoupled motor section built in which will be based around Martin Bastin designs and I'll probably get the SME cut out spacer re-fabricated from Panzerholz so that it's part of the plinth rather than a seperate bolted on spacer as it now. The 3012 tonearm is now with J7 @ AO. The Panzerholz plinth coming to frution means that this could be the end of this 301's journey. I suppose the only future updates to this thread will be boring stuff like new tonearms or carts!
