It's just collector nonsense. Golds are superior to any Reds - early or late - that I've heard, whether in modern or period cabinets. They also improved the crossover. It's an interesting phenomenon but it's got nothing to do with getting a better sound.
Also, the seller has had some questionable moments, I contacted him some years back about attempting to flog a pair of HPDs as as Gold, he basically told me to naff off and blocked me from his listings. Seems to be more established now so has perhaps learned to behave himself but I'd still be cautious.

Having owned 15" Reds and Golds, and used them in the same Lockwood cabinets, I know where you're coming from, Tom - and of course there's a reason why I swapped the original Reds for Golds....
The Reds are more one-trick ponies, *but* what they do well (midrange lucidity) is stunning, and significantly better in that area than Golds, which in turn are significantly better in the bass. It's pretty much horses for courses, including the amps you use with them, in order to get them to sing, and most importantly the music you're into.
Ultimately, for me, as I'm into such a wide and varied amount of music, Golds were the more versatile
