Yes, Ali's point was what I was trying to say. The Eddingdales and Linkwitz speakers will have a much narrower polar response and therefore their interaction with the room was way less.

Ah, I see... Now I get you! Yup, if that was a factor, then would I would certainly agree it would have a marked effect on the behaviour/performance of the speakers in question.

The point I was making was that if the acoustics of the room were so bad in the areas where both Rich's and Ken's system were, how were the Eddingdales, which were used later in Rich's system (in that same area), not as affected by room issues as the JBLs and Yammies appeared to be?

Quick word to add to the thanks for Steve organising the event.
Well worth the trip and great to put faces to the names...a good bunch of guys too.

Thoroughly enjoyed myself, got to hear some great (and very different) kit, which is what its all about.

Shame about the few technical problems on the day, these things cant be factored in and it wouldn't be a hifi get together without SOMETHING happening.

That said I was a wee bit gutted when the mains issues stopped my 300B working properly.
There's a bit of magic goes on when its hooked up to the Edingdales and I was looking forward to letting you guys hear it.
That said, before the mains started it farting at two cycles per second it didn't sound too bad, room issues aside.
Agree with Ali that at these shows you wont get the sound you get at home, so the trick always for me is to go with the flow and just enjoy it.

On a personal note, I was interested to hear the various passive pre's with the Edingdales and compare to my Densen. I've heard the Slagel in my own system so looked forward to hearing the other passives.
Have to agree with Marco, pretty incolclusive and I didn't come away with any urge to change, so will be good to hear Marco's Goldpoint (with the Z-Foils?) next time he's back up in the Old Country.

Shame too about Rich's problems with the NVA gear?
Is good kit and not a lot of people have heard it, so would have been good for it to have got an airing all going well.
The Nebo gremlins had other plans though, but hey what can you do?

Loved Gordon's active system, the open baffles always do well at these events.
Highlight for me was unexpected, the Mission 752 speaker lash up!
Back in the day I always wanted a set but being a skint student I couldn't afford them. Great to hear them again, that system boogied really well...ZZ Top sounded great!

Ken made some very valid comments about the stands they were on which, whilst attractive may not be the best design. He also remarked he got more bass from them standing at the other end of the room where they were transferring it all down through the raised floor section (presumably hollow box beneath where we were sitting) which makes me think if they'd been on the dancefloor with a couple of bits of granite under them they'd have been fine.

The one thing I can say for certain having messed around with them at home (concrete floors, close to a rear wall, listening from around 8ft away with 6ft between them) is that whatever was happening on the day isnt down to the amps, cables or indeed the speakers themselves.

Those Freedoms are a semi-forgotten gem from Mission...still a very nice floor stander punching heavy weight..though long discontinued...one of the better budget speakers where Mission hit the nail right on the head...

You'll find out next year in the summer...when we go to No.7..I'm looking forward to it..It was a very interesting day....You all might get the pleasure of Big Al's Rig too..I'm getting the Itch.

Just like to add what a bake off,'twas my 3rd and they just get better. Nice to meet up with new and old friends alike. Gordon I thought your rig with the linkwitz speakers was something very special,masses of controlled low end.

Thanks to Steve (petchy) for been a host with the most and for allowing people like me the opportunity to not only listen to and admire great kit but to meet great people it really means a lot to me btw your a canny air guitarist to boot. I will keep my promise aswell Steve and bring the jvc next nebo(sorry)!!!!!!!

I'll bring some power cables and mains conditioning to try with the various gear,if you like. As I said earlier, the next NEBO can't happen fast enough. Been reading comments and in my humble opinion is, I thought the Linkwitz with the 4 dacs sounded superb and didn't seem to suffer from any room interaction issuses. I thought the Yamaha NSM's with the Seasick Steve track was excellent but not quite as good with busier music, still nice though. Next up Rich B's JBL's, were a quite bass domineering sound, would be lovely if the balance could be sorted so the mids were more prominent. The Nordge speakers were lovely with the Derrin Norendorf, (I think), but were really messy with music that was busier. I would've loved to have heard the set ups with my Isotek Sigmas in situ as this has a habit of really letting you hear into a busy track. We'll find out next year, and thanks again for a lovely day.
