It is borderline silly and that is the point. Is it deliberately silly enough to be satire or is it a political polemic that is unintentionally silly?

Yes the proper Total Recall is one of his too. You should watch Starship Troopers it is excellent and it has Denise Richards at the height of her powers.

It attracted some controversy since it depicts something of a 'fascist' future where it is insects verses man for survival in the galaxy. The book was essentially the war with Japan set in space, the film does depart from the book in some ways, but many critics complained that if it was satire it was not obvious satire.

Essentially in the future human society you can only vote and have children if you undertake military service for 5 years. On the grounds that 'something given has no value.' Another good one is: 'Violence is the ultimate authority from which all other authority descends,'

Anyway worth a watch, pref with the surround sound whacked up a bit.

His directorial track record is somewhat varied from the poor: 'Total Recall' (which is so far removed from the Philip K. Dick short story as to be ludicrous) and 'Robocop', to the quite good: 'Black Book'. However the bleaching of the heroine's pubic hair in the film, whilst quite probably true, is a gratuitous detail.

I'd say sometimes a diversion from the Phillip K Dick source material is a good thing if making a movie from a book, see Blade Runner and how different it woulds be if it was ACTUALLY about electric sheep..

I tried reading the book and gave up, horrible writing style and weird structure.

I've always thought 'Fade Out' by Patrick Tilley, would have made a fantastic sci-fi movie! The plot and ideas are great. One of the most impressive sci-fi stories I've come across.

(how many of you remember that book, let alone have read it? )
