Interesting. I've not heard Szell's cycle before. Precision playing by the Clevelanders. Interpretively cool, definitely not for Bernstein fans who prefer their Brahms on the lush and romantic side! I enjoyed both symphonies. Decent recording.

Nielsen - 'Symphonies 1 & 2'

Not at all familiar with Nielsen (apart from his 5th), so when I saw this in a charity shop for 99p, it was a no-brainer purchase. Will need a couple more listens, but so far I have found it largely 'average': it didn't do much for me.

Penderecki is a strange composer for me.
Much of his music can be just random noise as far as I am concerned, but now and then I come across a really great piece.
A few days ago I stumbled on his String Trio and was bowled over.
Today it's his piano concerto.

Listened to this one 3 times on the trot ...



then another time with this one ...



Which is an even better performance and recording.
Hey, even the flute concerto is good!

I too have difficulties with Penderecki. Like you, I find most of it seems to be a lot of discordant noise. But I'll check out his concertos. Thanks for the 'heads up' Jerry.

I love piano music and in my opinion Grieg's Concerto is one of the best.
I never get sick of hearing the opening strident bars.
Listening to it on my CD player, through my amp [both in my signature] and recording it onto a TDK tape for my mother.
For the recording I am using the Akai Gixmio.

Listening now - more interesting than Isserlis with Hickox, but probably still comes under the heading of self-indulgent pompous meandering aimless twaddle as far as I am concerned.
It's just a style of music that irritates the hell out of me.
