My account on WHS is set up with RW access on all shares, the kids all have accounts that are read only and can only access some of the shares. If I access one of the restricted shares from the kids PC I get prompted to enter a username and password and I can use my username and password to get access so I'm 100% sure I have WHS configured for me to have full access to all shares. As I said, I'll try re-writing the image to see if that makes any difference and I'll try logging in with no username or password to see if it will let me access using the guest account. If I still can't get it to work I'll post some screenshots to see if anyone can see where I've gone wrong.
Anyone any idea why I can't connect using volumio.local and I need to use the ip address?

Still no joy. Here's how I have WHS and Volumio setup can anyone see anything obviously wrong (I've tried my credentials and Guest credentials in Volumio)

There are definitely still some bugs in Volumio when it comes to mounting remote shared drives. I remember tearing my hair out over this when I was trying to get it to point at my NAS box. It was another good reason for moving to MinimServer as this circumvents all of that hassle.

I'm not sure if this will help, but as I remember it, Volumio has trouble with mounting guest accounts, so you're better off with a proper login and password, but even then, there is a bug in the underlying Linux kernel. Something worth trying is to click the Advanced options at the bottom of the screen and add sec=ntlm to the end of what is already on that line - start with a comma to delimit it from any options that precede it. This worksaround a cifs/samba bug in the Linux client and I remember that helped me when I was using Volumio to perform remote share mounting.

You beat me to it with using "sec=ntlm" as a mount option, but it's not a kernel bug. In fact. this is not any kind of bug.

If relates to the default security mode used for SMB/CIFS mounts in more recent kernels which changed from ntlm to ntlmssp. Depending on what version of SMB is runing on your Windows PC, NAS etc. you may need to add the "sec=ntlm" mount option. There's a brief explanation here:

Note: "sec" is the security mode and determines how passwords are encrypted between server and client ( even if you don't require passwords ).

Hence it appears Volumio has trouble with mounting guest accounts, but's all down to using the correct security mode.

Yay! Great to hear that worked. Hope it's all plain sailing from here on in. That was the one thing that caused me a lot of head scratching so hopefully it's all good now.

I retract my statement that it's a bug. It's a bug in the same way that I call the fact that the newest versions of Filezilla make every connection connect using TLS encryption which many FTP sites don't use, so you can no longer use the quickconnect option which is a royal pain, so I tend to call anything that causes unnecessary extra steps a bug, but probably more diplomatic to call them 'functional quirks'
