Count me among the trepidatious ....
I am waiting for my Pi recipe ingredients to arrive but getting quite anxious reading the reports on here of folks struggling. There seem to be particular problems with Mac set up (which is what I have)
Being a Mac user for a couple of decades I'm used to things not being straightforward with new kit although I must say most of the struggles were in the distant past.

Anyone know of a good walk through that is NOT Windows based ??

..and me. I am Mac based as well (and not used to things not working first time). I have the Pi but the IQAudio DAC should be arriving soon.

It was a bit of pain to do as you have to do some programing,[i had help] but once the Micro SD card has all the info on it, it works fine, i am using Volumio.
It should be posible to clone the Micro SD card, i have two Pi 2's, when i got the second one, all i did was swap the SD card into it from my original one, and it worked fine, right out of the box, no need for keyboard, mouse, or any additional programing!

There is an easy way to set up if you get stuck with Volumio (sounds good but a bit of a pain with NAS storage, much easier with USB HDD attached to the Pi), write Picoreplayer to a small SD card and pop it in the Pi, install Logitech Media Server on your PC or Mac and use that to catalogue the music library. Make sure both are connected to your network (wired or wireless) and then use either a smartphone or tablet with Squeezebox app and they should all be easy to find from the app. Your Pi will be called Picoreplayer and will have connected to LMS and the app will allow you to control the Pi.

It is the easiest way to get up and running that I've found, this will then let you try other setups at your leisure on another SD card. Picoreplayer is so small that the Pi can be unplugged without causing problems and I've found it very stable. Downside is that a PC/Mac needs to be on constantly running LMS. I'd also use Powerline network plugs to connect things over a network, once again more robust connection with higher speeds (in my 3 floor victorian semi)...

Welcome to the club, mate! Are you using yours with the IQ-Audio DAC? *That* is where the magic lies....

Btw, I'm using mine now with Paul's SR3DR linear PSU - my goodness how that transforms the RPi from something that sounds superb, to something that sounds UTTERLY STUNNING! Doubtless, you'll be building your own PSU for it, and if so, it'll be interesting to compare them

When folks say 'by setup on a Mac' do you mean creating the SD image? If so its a complete dodle to do! There are guides on the HiFiBerry web site. Download the player image you want and then follow this guide for Mac OS to the letter: https://www.hifiberry.com/guides/cre...from-img-file/

As a prep, go to Utilities or Other and open up a Terminal session. At the command prompt type in sudo diskutil list

Hit enter, enter your admin login password at the prompt.....some stuff is output in the terminal window IE:

/dev/disk0
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *121.3 GB disk0
1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 120.5 GB disk0s2

Make a note of the /dev/disk? disks, these are the disks YOU DO NOT WANT TO TOUCH.

Insert the SD car in your Mac, if you don't have a slot you will need an adapter to connect it via USB.

At the command prompt type in sudo diskutil list again and note the /dev/disk? of the SD drive...now you have that follow the HiFiBerry guide on the link I've just posted.

Programming? What programming?

Let's try to be positive folks, before the technophobia sets in! Using a Rpi+Volumio+DAC is not rocket science. If you can read and follow a clear set of instructions and , if necessary, ask for guidance in a coherent manner on forums like this, then there's absolutely no reason why this should be for geeks only.

Forearmed is forewarned, so I'd encourage everyone to at least give this a quick read:

Keep in mind the following:

1.You need to start with a wired connection before you can get a wireless connection working.

2. If you're using a i2s based sound device like the IQaudio DAC or one of the hifiberry products, you need to activate i2s on your Rpi via Volumio before you can use the device.

3. Your audio files can be on a USB memory stick or USB HDD directly connected to the Rpi ( in the later case you may have to think about a powered hub, or tweaking the Rpi config to provide max power through it's USB ports) , or on another computer/laptop/NAS device made available to the Rpi via a Windows/OSX/Linux share.

4. Take care with info entered on Volume about your NAS shares. The “remote directory” name should not begin with a slash “/”. See the example in the reference above.

Is this a correct summary for you?

1 Volumio now shows the hifiberry DIGI+ as a selectable sound device (possibly its appears as sndhifiberry) but you can't get Voulmio to mount your NAS share.

2. Runeaudio mounts your NAS share, but you haven't, or cannot, activate your hifiberry DIGI+ i2s sound card.


As you can see from my sig, I have had a RPiB+/HifiDigi+ combo in use for a few months now. When I tested Volumio and Rune, I did'nt have your problems, but I was using a wired connection and being familiar with Linux was able to check things via the command line.

If you currently have Runeaudio loaded on your SD card, I would check if you've gone through the settings, correctly selecting any i2s options. See : http://www.runeaudio.com/documentation/runeui/settings/ and then go back to the MPD config page on Rune.

If you still fail to get this working on Runeaudio, you'll have to tackle the mount problem on Volumio. You can safely do some checks at the command line on Volumio to help debug the situation, but not alter settings, as Alan warned, because Volumio maintains an internal database of configuration settings.

One common point of error when entering info for a Windows share on Volumio is having a leading slash in the "remote directory name". If your NAS share is for example \\192.168.1.75\Public\Music, then you'd enter Public/Music as the remote directory.

On the Volumio pathname, There is only only one Folder I'm pointing at, at the top level of the disk (unless something like 'Public' is invisible?) - 'Music' so the only thing I'm putting in the pathname is Music or Music/ - the IP address I'm using is the one in the BT router profile page. Inside there are Mac type folders containing iTunes material and Flac material, I wonder if I should replace the spaces with underscores or something?

This was not the case when I last tested Runeaduio - did you download the latest v0.3-beta version? Have you checked the reference I gave you?

Make sure your are using the ip of the NAS. And you're quite sure the share path is \\<ip of nas>\Music? ( Did you try Public/Music as your remote directory?). To check the RPi can see your NAS share:

Use the MAC's inbuilt "Terminal" app to login into the RPi via SSH as root with the password volumio, eg: (replace 192.168.1.100 with actual IP of your RPI)

ssh root@192.168.1.100

Type volumio when it asks for a password.

As root in your RPi execute this command (replace 192.168.1.50 with actual IP of your NAS):

smbclient -L  192.168.1.50  -U %

If the RPi can see your NAS share, it will be listed in the command's output. Cut & paste the output here.
