Ok, (after following the instructions on Google on how to open a command prompt, lol - thanks Graeme), I've now accessed the above. Do I simply put the playback levels at 100%, so that all three 'coloured bars' (as shown above) 'FIR inte' are fully lit up into the red?

If so, does that mean the DAC is now set to output 2v?

Only the first bar on the left was fully lit up, when I first went in. The other two, on the right, were blank.

I'd like to know this too, as I'm pretty sure on on older version of squeezeplug it looked different as I was able to adjust the gain easily, but this new menu has me stumped.

You have Playback and Playback Boost to set. Set PlayBack to 100%, it enables the 2V or +6db output. Playback Boost adds an additional 0.8db if you need it say if the output doesn't quite match your Sony...

You need to set PCM to 86% (0dBFS - no digital gain or attenuation)
Playback and Playback boost are the ones that should be adjusted to suit (according to the input sensitivity of your pre) this will be an ears and brains activity. I'd suggest setting the pre to a sensible level and then winding up the 'playback' control, if you get all the way to the top and your system is still quiet (compared to what you'd expect for the pre volume setting) then proceed to winding up the playback boost control too (there's another couple of milivolts of gain on this slider) you'll want to be listening for any distortion that might be coming from overloading the inputs to your pre, if there is none then you're on to a winner.

The fact that those bars were blank may help answer why you were having the low volume issue earlier.

Yes, but from left to right, which bars represent what? It's unclear in Alsamixer, which is which.

If you could tell me, from left to right, which bars represent Playback (and thus the 2v output), and which ones Playback Boost, that would be great!

Incidentally, if Playback is represented by the bar on the left, then it was already set to full...

OK Under the three columns there are Blue boxes, the First PCM is the master vol control, the next Column is the Playback setting and the last is the Playback Boost setting. As you switch between each using the cursor keys the Yellow text near the top of the screen (where is says Item: ) changes to let you know which setting you are adjusting.

The manual could be a bit clearer with some arrows, took me a while to interpret the screen shots!
