I must admit... simply downloading music and not physically owning it (or physically looking for it) is one of my fears for the future of music.

Me too Jo, despite switching over to FBA 4 years ago, I still buy CDs and will only buy a download if there is no other possible way of getting the music, which sadly is increasing. What really pisses me off greatly about the majority of downloads, is the lack of any artwork and liner notes - I like to have the lyrics, I want to know who the musicians are and who wrote the songs and every other bit of information you would have, if you bought either the CD or LP. And the worst of the worst are low bit rate downloads, I will never buy those.

Good. I can see the nicety of owning all forms of vinyl, which is why I have so much of it, and will continue to add to it.

But CDs? They just occupy space and once on a hard drive that's backed up I'd say they are more freakin' reliable anyway.

Well, I'm not as big a fan of CDs, but I still like to own the music I have. If it's on CD, then so be it. The racks of CDs in my listening room also act as a form of passive room treatment, and improve the acoustics of the room - I'm serious...

My wife has just got a sonic jewelery cleaner. Apparently it can be used to clean CDs. I wonder about cartridges? Diamond could fall of I guess... that'd be fun. Not! Might work though but conventional methods are best I suspect.

Ultrasonic cleaners just sort the surface, they are much more effective with clearing dirt out of jewellery mountings like with engagement rings. Don't use an ultrasonic cleaner with heavily included (black stuff inside the stone) diamonds or other stones that aren't ruby or sapphire or your wife may find she cracks a stone!

They also need water to work (turn it on without and it'll die after time), so unless you want to submerge your cartridge it's not got any real HiFi application LOL!

Ownership counts for a lot with me so to still own the source product makes much more sense.

Have you seen the price of some of those 24bit downloads Jo Shared file stuff on HDD etc are not always what you think your getting either. Some stuff purporting to be 24bit or DSD or even 16 bit are in fact far lower bit rates. When you buy the physical stuff you can be sure what your getting

for my part, I have given up all my LP's and CD's and ripped the lot to a NAS. Initially because I had "space" problems. I couldn't store the stuff anymore. Having services like Spotify and other Internet based services, costing about the price of a CD / month gives me a limitless library of music to discover with the SQ getting better over time. Ownership vs. Discovery. But if you have the space to store all your LP's and CD's you can have the best of both ! Discover stuff on the Internet then buy the CD or LP at your local music store (maybe). Great times.
