I like the more serious sixties b&w films too. 'The Loneliness of a Long Distance Runner', 'The 'L' Shaped room', 'This Sporting Life', 'Saturday Night & Sunday Morning' and so many more.

I recently got the restored version of Kind Hearts and Coronets. Alec Guinness played 8 roles and co starred Dennis Price and Valerie Hobson...might watch that tomorrow actually. think they restored Pimlico as well but not got it yet. Kind Hearts and Coronets was a masterpiece. Absolutely brilliant and clever, loved the ending and Joan Greenwood was so pretty when she was young.

decided to watch Crooks anon....Stanley Baxter was such a talent and Wilfrid Hyde-White, he always looked the same, no matter the film. Must have been born that age.

You can get it on DVD, I've got a copy. There is a whole Ealing series. I've got 'In The Dead Of Night' too, which is well worth having. The real star of School for Scoundrels is Alistair Sim who teaches the Carmichael character all of the 'tricks' he needs to overcome cads like Thomas and get the girl. Only things don't quite work out as planned. Sim was a genius comic actor, brilliant in everything he is in. He adopted George Cole who was an orphan living on the streets and raised him as his own. If you watch Cole's performances in shows like Minder it is uncanny how much of Sim there is in him even though they were not blood relations. He even resembles him physically and in 'A Christmas Carol' with Sim as Scrooge, Cole plays the part of Scrooge as a younger man.

Michael Redgrave's depiction of the possessed puppeteer, with his monstrous 'Hugo' was unbelievably good. Really made the hair on the back of your neck stand up!
'Night of the Demon' was another hugely atmospheric and brilliantly done horror movie of its time. Niall McGuiness was great as the baddie. The whole film is nicely creepy.

Yes both of those films are all the better for being in black and white, too. They knew how to do creepy back then, horror on a psychological level instead of the hack and slash, blood and gore that is the modern version of the genre.
