A wonderful CD, except for the tedious Bainton sonata (although those who like the music of Arthur Bliss may like it).

Lots of great large scale orchestral/vocal/choral music is herein enshrined, by some totally obscure composers who probably shouldn't be!

Sadly (tragically) it turned out to be only the 1st disc of a 2 disc boxset -- but it is absolutely phenomenal as a performance and as a recording - the sound is just massively superior to any of the reissues I have come across.

Oh yes, that is in many ways my definitive version of the second. Both the LP and CD are good and convey the hugeness of the playing extremely well. I saw Tennstedt conducting it with the LPO at the Festival Hall and it remains (together with Rattle some years later) a high point of my concert going experiences.

Shostakovich Symphony No. 10, Petrenko, RLPO, Naxos [cd]



I played this again in an attempt to get more from it, and I did manage to. Despite it not reaching the heights of Jarvi's Allegro, it is exciting to listen to and does convey some emotion (more than a couple of my recordings manage) without falling into performance-by-numbers. I just wish he didn't keep pulling back the brass just when they need to blare out over the orchestra. Of course, this could be a limitation of the RLPO's brass section. Not bad, but the Jarvi remains the best.
