If Gordon's system is perfect for him why change. I am not surprised his 'vintage' kit gets the basic tonality of instruments right given he has components that are well regarded and sought after even today. Some people concentrate on hi-fi things like a little extra bass or sharper/smoother treble but does not necessarily alter the basic way music is reproduced. I'm sure we have all heard high end systems that do 'hi-fi' but fail to reproduce music properly.
If you keep box swapping it only indicates that you are never satisfied with what you have got and have no real idea of the sound you like or how real music performance should sound. I long ago decided to concentrate on building up my music collection (mainly vinyl) with the odd tweak every few years while being aware that the current system could be significantly improved. Due for some major changes soon though but will be building on the strengths of what I have rather than a completely different approach. Chopping and changing can easily amount to the cost of a complete high end system investment every decade or so.
